*Palestinian unity and the new Middle East*
<http://www.maannews .net/eng/ ViewDetails. aspx?ID=385051>
Ramzy Baroud, Ma'an News Agency 5/6/2011
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's response to the
Hamas-Fatah deal in Cairo was both swift and predictable.
"The Palestinian Authority must choose either peace with Israel or
peace with Hamas. There is no possibility for peace with both," he said,
in a televised speech shortly after the Palestinian political rivals
reached a reconciliation agreement under Egyptian sponsorship on April 27.
Despite numerous past attempts to undercut President Mahmoud
Abbas, stall peace talks and derail Israel's commitment to previous
agreements, Netanyahu and his rightwing government are now arguing that
Palestinians are solely responsible for the demise of the illusory
"peace process."
Israeli bulldozers will continue to carve up the hapless West Bank
to make room for more illegal settlements, but this time their excuse
may not be "natural expansion." The justification might instead be
Israel has no partner. US and other media will merrily repeat the
dreadful logic, and Palestinians will, as usual, be chastised.
But frankly, at this juncture of Middle East history, Israel is
almost negligible. It no longer has a transformative influence in the
region. When the Arab people began revolting, a new dimension to the
Arab-Israeli conflict emerged.
As the chants in Cairo's Tahrir Square began to adopt a pan-Arab
and pro-Palestinian language, it became obvious that Egypt would soon
venture outside the political confines of Washington's patronizing
labels, which divide the Arabs into moderates (good) and radicals
(bad).more..

*Jeff Goldberg vs Ma'an News: Media Bias Obsession*
<http://palestinenot e.com/blogs/ blogs/archive/ 2011/05/05/ jeff-goldberg- vs-ma-an- news-media- bias-obsession. aspx>
Mitchell Plitnick, Palestine Note 5/5/2011
In the latter part of the 20th century, trying to uncover bias
became all the rage. Once it was acknowledged that news, history,
academic papers, and all sorts of information sources reflected the
inherent bias of the author, de-construction became a full-time job.
As with most such things, it got taken to an extreme. The result,
in its worst form, was the ability of a right wing, massively funded
news network to call itself "fair and balanced" as juxtaposed against an
allegedly liberal media.
Nowhere is this dissection of alleged bias more visible than in
the Israel-Palestine conflict. Both sides complain endlessly about the
bias against them in media and academia. And both sides are right, to
some extent. One should, indeed, read a history book or news report with
a consciousness about who is writing it and what the publication that is
dispersing it might have invested in it. If you do that, there is only a
very small, and easily spotted, amount of material that needs to be
summarily dismissed.
Not everything written by a Jew who supports Israel is necessarily
false or misleading, or that everything written by an Arab is false or
misleading in the opposite direction.
There are huge strains of this on both sides: on the
pro-Palestinian side, we have the "Zionist-controlled media" canard, as
well as more serious examinations that look at how a close US ally might
be given quite a few breaks in the media. On the "pro-Israel" side there
is a virtual industry (populated by such well-heeled organizations as
CAMERA and Palestinian Media Watch [PMW]) built around it.more..

*Britain's Jewish 'anti-Zionist' pretenders lose another battle*
<http://www.redress. cc/zionism/ gatzmon20110506>
Gilad Atzmon, Redress 5/6/2011
/Gilad Atzmon considers the failure of "anti-Zionist" pretenders
embedded in the Palestine solidarity movement in the UK to prevent a
recent public debate in London on the subject of "Jewishness, Zionism
and Israel", including the use by the fake anti-Zionists of tactics that
included bullying and harassment of panelists./
Despite relentless underhand efforts by Israeli operators in the
UK and their close allies in the Jewish "anti-Zionist" network to block
a public debate on "Jewishness, Zionism and Israel", the event went
ahead as scheduled on 3 May.
In fact, the event was a tremendous success.
Speaking to a full hall, Alan Hart, Karl Sabbagh, Sameh Habeeb and
I elaborated on the meaning of "Jewishness" and the essence of Zionism.
We also tried to understand once and for all why it is that some
Jews who claim to be the most sincere "supporters of Palestine" are
always among the first to stifle debate on such crucial issues. Stifling
debate
Six years ago, I was shocked to learn about the destructive impact
of elements within the UK Jewish "anti-Zionist" network. At the time
they were intent on burying Deir Yassin Remembered (DYR), probably the
most significant Nakba memorial group in the Palestinian solidarity
movement. Unfortunately, they succeeded: by putting into action the most
repulsive Zionist tactics, the Jewish "anti-Zionists" eventually managed
to bring down DYR.more..

*The Assassination of bin Laden: Its Use and Abuse*
<http://palestinechr onicle.com/ view_article_ details.php? id=16846>
Palestine Chronicle: 6 May 2011 - By James Petras The assassination of
bin Laden has been celebrated as a great strategic victory by the White
House, the European capitals and all the major mass media outlets
throughout the world. The killing has served as a major propaganda tool
to enhance the standing of the US military in the eyes of the domestic
public and to serve as a warning to overseas adversaries. Contrary to
this immense propaganda campaign and despite whatever symbolic value the
killing may have in the eyes of his executioners, there is no evidence
that the death will have any impact on the deteriorating military and
political position of the US in South Asia, the Middle East, North
Africa or elsewhere. Bin Laden and Al Qaeda Even in terms of weakening,
let along defeating Al Qaeda, the killing will have minimal effect. Al
Qaeda is a highly decentralized organization, a loose collection

*Egypt and Israel Headed for Crisis*
<http://palestinechr onicle.com/ view_article_ details.php? id=16845>
Palestine Chronicle: 6 May 2011 - By Jonathan Cook -- Nazareth Israeli
officials have expressed alarm at a succession of moves by the interim
Egyptian government that they fear signal an impending crisis in
relations with Cairo. The widening rift was underscored yesterday when
leaders of the rival Palestinian factions Hamas and Fatah signed a
reconciliation pact in the Egyptian capital. Egypt's secret role in
brokering the agreement last week caught both Israel and the United
States by surprise. The Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu,
called the deal "a tremendous blow to peace and a great victory for
terrorism". Several other developments have added to Israeli concerns
about its relations with Egypt, including signs that Cairo hopes to
renew ties with Iran and renegotiate a long-standing contract to supply
Israel with natural gas. More worrying still to Israeli officials are
reported plans by Egyptian authorities to open the Rafah crossing into
Gaza, closed for the past...more

*'Jewishness' , Scare Tactics, and a Sense of Humour*
<http://palestinechr onicle.com/ view_article_ details.php? id=16844>
Palestine Chronicle: 6 May 2011 - By Lauren Booth -- London Cloak and
dagger antics outside a campus in central London, Tuesday night, as the
University of Westminster, caved into threats of disturbance, from UK
based Zionists. Why? Because, Gilad Atzmon, world renowned saxophonist,
author and anti Zionist racconteur had put together a panel to debate
the following; 'Jewishness and Israeli criminality. ' To a packed venue
just round the corner from the campus the discussion began with
breathtakingly robust opening statements. Consider, as you read, the
immense pressure not to take part placed on each panelist and the
threats against the university of Westminster of disturbance or even
violence if the talk took place. Alongside Gilad Atzmon, the panel
consisted of Alan Hart, author, former Middle East Chief Correspondent
for Independent Television News and former BBC Panorama presenter,
specialising in the Middle East. And Karl Sabbagh, author, TV producer
and publisher. Gilad began his talk by...more

*Americans May Trust In God, But Not Government*
<http://palestinechr onicle.com/ view_article_ details.php? id=16843>
Palestine Chronicle: 6 May 2011 - By Lina Sawan As the Arabs watch, with
justified trepidation, how their efforts to change regimes and establish
better lives unfold in the hands of those currently in charge; it may be
helpful to consider trust issues ascending on the opposite side of the
Atlantic. Within three days of the announcement of Barack Obama that
Osama Bin Laden had been killed in Pakistan by American forces in an
authorised operation, American officials had revised the original
storyline and changed essential details. Obama has also announced that
the eagerly-awaited photos of Bin Laden's body, which we are told has
been hurriedly buried at sea, will not be released. Suspicions that the
truth may never be revealed are spreading worldwide, and despite their
determination to celebrate, even the American people are doubting that
their government is coming clean. It is easy to understand that the
Americans distrust their government, including the President,.. .more
