Today, 13th of May 2011, the people of Bil'in commemorated the Nakba day. About 200 Palestinians, Israelis and internationals marched together towards the Wall. Some had dressed up as refugees from 1948, to commemorate those who were forced from their homeland 63 years ago. Also some were carrying a large key symbolizing all those refugees who still hold the key to their homes, not being allowed to return in spite of UN resolutution 194 that clearly states that all the refugees from 1948 must be allowed back and offered compensation.
The army had declared the village a closed military zone, trying to prevent people from reaching the village by setting up closures on all the roads around Bil'in. The army had also set up sementblocks and barbed wire in front of the Eastern gate in order to prevent people from reaching the gate. Hundreds of soldiers and border police had lined up on the military post and around the fence.
Clashes erupted between army and protesters, and large amounts of tear gas and sound bombs were used, in addition to sewage water sprayed at the protesters. Many people suffered from tear gas inhalation, and some were vomiting. Ahmed Abu Rahma was hit by a tear gas canister on his arm, causing pain.
The tear gas set fire to the dry ground several times, and protesters prevented it to spread. The demonstration lasted for about 2 hours. (many thanks to Tom V)........ 63 Years of Nakbawww.youtube.com/watch?v=bIO4W3nxGaM&feature=shareUploaded by Death2Munchkins on May 12, 2011
To reply to the Gaza youth Manifesto, and with no additional words to the ones spoken with true heart on this video, we give you, The Manifesto. A simple, true, self-explanatory, expression of what we're sick of.
As these days mark the 63rd memory of the Nakba, our people all around the world, revolt, and object to the injustice and hatred we are met with on a day to day basis, just because we're Palestinians and just because we exist.
I urge your humanity and your conscience, to spread on this video, so the 15th of May 1948, wouldn't ever be forgot, and so Palestinians would once more have their freedom and rights back; especially the right of return.
Salamat, Two randoms from Palestine.
P.S. Offensive comments to any race, nationality or religion will be removed.

Silwan Teenager Dies of Wounds Sustained from Israeli BulletDate : 14/5/2011 Time : 08:38 WAFA — Palestine News and Info AgencyJERUSALEM, May 14, 2011 (WAFA) – Milad Ayyash, 16, from Ras Al-Amoud in Jerusalem, died Saturday morning of wounds sustained when Israeli police opened fire at protestors in the East Jerusalem neighbourhood of Silwan on Friday, according medical sources. 13-5-2011 www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqwSdpTPSbUSources at Makassed Hospital in East Jerusalem, where Ayyash was taken after he was shot, said the teenager arrived in hospital in critical condition and had lost a lot of blood because he was late in being transported to hospital.Doctors performed immediate surgery on Ayyash that went on for several hours as family and friends gathered all night outside the hospital praying and donating blood to save his life. However, as all efforts to save life failed, doctors pronounced Ayyash dead Saturday morning.According to Wadi Hilweh Information Center, which reports on events in Silwan, it was not clear if Ayyash was hit by a live bullet from Israeli police or settlers, whom the center said were also taking part in shooting at the young protestors in Silwan. Palestinian residents of Silwan clashed with Israeli police after the weekly Friday prayer at the protest tent in Silwan’s Bustan area. Police fired tear gas at the protestors and into homes causing fire to break out in one of the houses, according to the center. Several people were hit with rubber bullets and many had to be treated from tear gas inhalation, particularly older people, as police fired the tear gas straight into the crowded homes in the neighborhood. Silwan was not the only place that witnessed clashes between Palestinians and Israeli police or soldiers on Friday as Palestinians commemorated Nakba Day, marking 63 years since their uprooting from their homes and lands in Palestine following the first Arab-Israeli war in 1948.
Clashes were also reported in several East Jerusalem neighborhoods and at Qalandia checkpoint between Jerusalem and Ramallah. Young Palestinians pelted Israeli forces with stones, who responded by firing tear gas and rubber bullets. A number of people were hit by rubber bullets and others suffered from tear gas inhalation. "He Didn't Seem Suicidal" Salamat, Riad HamadBy GREG MOSES Counterpunch — Weekend Edition May 3 / 4, 2008The thing about courthouse reporting is the stories come packaged for delivery. For a thirty-dollar check and a five-minute wait, the clerk at the federal courthouse will hand you a document whose news value comes pre-certified by affiants with impeccable credentials, signed off by a U.S. Magistrate Judge. “That’s sixty pages,” she says, not meaning to remind you of the audio thud that television producers delivered yesterday when they dropped this report in front of the camera from two feet above the desk. Walking back out the silent stone building, past the metal detector, wishing the courteous guardian a nice afternoon, I wonder that times have changed so many of these heavyweight buildings into inner sanctums. Thank goodness that I could explain myself briefly. Standing later in the May shade across from the Texas capitol, sipping a short cup of coffee, I am nothing but depressed, having stopped off at the pizza joint for a stuffed slice and preview of the thudding federal litany that served in late February to warrant the search of the South Austin home of Riad Hamad. It is a summary of the last chapter of his life. “We had a very unpleasant visit from the FBI and IRS agents yesterday morning and they walked out with more than 40 boxes of tax returns, forms, documents, books, flags, cds etc.,” wrote Riad Hamad in a Feb. 29 email that was quickly forwarded across the internet. “The special agent said that they have a probable cause for money laundering, wire fraud, bank fraud..etc and I think that all of it stems from more than 35 years of watching me.”Indeed, the 60-page package, unsealed last week by the federal court in Austin, contains an affidavit which swears that Riad Hamad’s home had been under surveillance enough to be able to report license plate numbers from his car and those driven by his closest companions in life. There is a fourteen page inventory of the stuff that was taken from Riad Hamad’s house on Feb. 27. Miscellaneous bills seized from the dashboard of a BMW. Notepad with notes seized from a briefcase in a Ford Explorer. Tax return info found in a canvas bag. Deposit slips. Paycheck stubs. Spreadsheets of addresses, names, phone numbers. Articles of Incorporation for the Arab-American Cultural Society. Miscellaneous medical records. From the top stereo shelf of the kitchen the feds seized CD Roms. From the second shelf they took cassette and camcorder tapes. From the dresser in the master bedroom they grabbed various letters. From the kitchen table some W-2 forms. From luggage in the master bedroom they removed the airline luggage tags. They took the Dell Optiplex, the HP Pavillion, the Gateway laptop, and both Compaq Presarios, along with two generic thumb drives, one Kingston 2GB media card, and two floppy disks. From master closet (hers) they took passports. From master closet (his) they took 80 video tapes. From the master bedroom nightstand they took a sheet of paper with handwriting. And from the family room they took something called “Volkswagon of America.” From the master bedroom desk they took medical bills (’98 forward) and house purchase documents. From the trash can outside the house they pulled a postal service package sent from Stone Ridge, NY to Riad Hamad. And David Rovics, if you’re out there listening, they took your CD, too, from a file cabinet in the office. That’s some of the stuff listed up to page 8 of 14, but that’s enough, don’t you think, to get the picture. They came to Riad Hamad’s house, and they cleaned him out. Well, maybe we should also mention (from page 11 of 14) that on the piano they found a book entitled, “War on Freedom.” They don’t say what they found in the safety deposit box when that was searched, too. The federal agent who asked for the search warrant works for the Joint Terrorism Task Force, and he sets forth a case of probable cause involving “an illegal fraud scheme through the use of non-profit organizations, false documents submitted via U.S. Postal Service, false documents transmitted via wire communications, the failure to file federal income tax returns for the years 1999 through 2003 and 2005, and tax evasion for the years 1999 through 2006.”
There is absolutely no probable cause that Riad Hamad had anything to do with terrorism. Some sizable cash payments were allegedly delivered via ATM to the occupied Palestinian Territories. But according to Google, the man named in the affidavit as the one who received those payments appears to be a well-known nonviolent activist. In fact, the affidavit says very little about where Riad Hamad spent his money. “Hamad sends large amounts of money to the Middle East and/or to charities that forwarded these funds to the Middle East. The disposition of these funds is unknown at this time.” At the website for the Palestine Children’s Welfare Fund, is a list that has not been referenced in the affidavit or by any press reports about the affidavit. There Riad Hamad offers some accounting of his donations and spending. According to my calculations, based upon the materials that he posted online, Riad Hamad publicly declared donations in the amount of $491,751.05 and expenses in the amount of $331,897.00 for the period starting Jan. 1, 2002 and ending Jan. 31, 2008. Beginning in 2005, however, there are large gaps in the online numbers, some of them apparently due to inadvertent sloppiness. For example, Riad Hamad posted a document that purports to show donations from 2005, but actually shows donations from 2006. Therefore, he posted the 2006 numbers twice, probably without realizing that he had overwritten his previous file. “Most small nonprofits have terrible record-keeping,” writes an Austin attorney who helped Riad Hamad find a lawyer after the Feb. 27 raid. On that count, Riad Hamad appears guilty as the rest. Federal agents hinted that Riad Hamad may have been a tax protester, too. “Hamad also filed a document titled ‘Redirect TAX Money AWAY from Israel’ with the IRS,” says the affidavit. “Your affiant believes that this form is used by ‘anti-tax’ groups as a way for them to justify not filing federal income tax returns or not paying income tax to the IRS.” Riad Hamad sent in the form twice, during 2002 and 2007. He also declared zero withholding from his paychecks. And when he filed for an extension in 2005, “Hamad listed his tax liability, Total 2005 payments, Balance due, and Amount you are paying as being $0.00 for all of the line items.” So far, we have a story of a big-hearted man with a temper for justice who worked fast but loose in the cause of Palestinian children’s welfare. This is the man that everyone says they know well. It is the man that I talked to once by telephone when he was helping the incarcerated Palestinian families at the T. Don Hutto prison in Texas. As a boy growing up in Beirut, Riad Hamad would look from his widow over tented communities.
This is how he remembered it for me:
"What are those tents, Daddy?"
"Those are the Palestinians, Riad. They are waiting to return home."Could that boy grow up to be capable of killing himself at the age of 55 in despair over what things had come to? Could he put duct tape over his own eyes, bind his own feet and hands, and drown himself in Austin’s Lady Bird Lake?“He didn’t seem suicidal,” says one Austin attorney who met with Riad Hamad. And in an email to me on March 1, Riad Hamad dashed off the phrase, “will fight like hell.” But when Riad Hamad called his friend Paul Larudee via cell phone on the evening of April 14, he spoke in a hushed voice. And when Larudee shared news that a donation had arrived at the new California address of the censored WF, Riad Hamad said, “Well, it doesn’t matter.” He would be dead by April 15. Was it the ultimate tax protest? Beyond this point the affidavit veers into pathetic allegations about the background details of Riad Hamad’s home finances. Checks written via credit card accounts. Student loans from several colleges. Stock accounts. I can understand why Riad Hamad would not want to face these public humiliations. By chance on the bus home I am reading Derrida’s discussion about the role that pity plays in Rousseau’s account of human morality. Isn’t pity a good word for what young Riad Hamad must have felt as he peered out his window upon the Palestinian refugee camps of the 1950s? Isn’t pity a good word for what motivates so many people, as Paul Larudee explains, who actually travel to Palestine and experience the pain of dispossession up close? And isn’t pity what I right now feel for the kind of pain that must have consumed the last days of Riad Hamad’s life? Riad Hamad never could reconcile himself to a world where so many people could know so much about the Palestinian children, and care less.
Salamat, Riad Hamad. They are selling your suicide note down at the federal courthouse today. Salamat, Riad Hamad. Would you have us buy it? Activist Riad Hamad Murdered – letter he wrote to Bush in 2003 Posted on April 19, 2008 by maryitalia| 17 Comments For the obituary: Annie’s Letters. For a video. To: George Bush, President of the United States of America Washington, DC
I was very amused last week when I was trying to get into my car in the morning on my way to work, when my neighbor across the street came out and asked me if we could talk. Although I was in a hurry since I was late, I listened to him since he said that the topic was important. My neighbor told me that he was approached by the FBI and was asked many questions about me and was asked to put a camera in his house to watch me. The request was denied, as my neighbor, who happened to be a Libertarian, did not trust the motives of the FBI. Also, my neighbor told him that, “Riad is my friend and I would not spy on him.” Apparently, the agent did not give up and told my neighbor that he would call on him again.
Although I knew and expected such activities by the FBI, I was surprised about their lack of professionalism and the absence of decency. I carry my Iraqi flags to every rally and I am always the loudest and the most obvious. Hundreds of people come and ask me about the flags as they do not know which countries the flags stand for, and I have to say, “These are the flags of the countries that your tax money is paying to occupy, kill and maim,” since not many of them knew the colors of the flags of Palestine or Iraq. For the FBI to have to go and knock on my neighbor’s doors is very unprofessional and illegal. Besides, the FBI has been harassing members of the International Solidarity Movement and monitoring their phone calls, e-mails and movements around the nation. I assume this is an effort to harass them, intimidate them, and scare them from going around the United States to expose your lies, and that of your administration, about the real situation in occupied Palestine.
I have lived, went to college, and worked in the United States for over 30 years. I have no criminal record and not even a suspicion of committing a crime, such as your cocaine addiction, drunk driving, and going AWAL during your National Guard duty in Texas. Also, I have never sold shares of a bankrupt company to the pension fund of Bahrain National Oil Company like you did, which is nothing but fraud and insider trading.
I work with a group of individuals around the globe called the Palestine Children’s Welfare Fund in association with the Holy Land Trust out of Bethlehem, Palestine. We bring olive wood and embroidery from Palestine and raise money in the United States for the women and the children of the refugee camps. We are non-political and non-religious, and our donors and supporters are Muslims, Christians, Jews, and others who know better than to believe your message of hatred and aggression. Every penny we receive is accounted for and every penny we spend is accounted for on our Web site that I am sure that you have monitored and observed. Also, we sponsor only civilians who are either orphans or not affiliated with any political or religious groups and their only crime is that they are Palestinians.
As a patriotic citizen of this country, and to make sure that I give you a hand in combating “terrorism,” I have posted a sign near in our neighborhood letting people know that we are under surveillance. And asking our neighbors and the passers by to inform the FBI of any suspicious activities and the sign and the pictures of the house with the sign is on the Web page link.
Over the past weekend, several of our neighbors came by and apologized for your stupidity and that of the FBI and other officials. One of them told me that, “I am ashamed to say that I am an American since George Bush became president.” Others tried to apologize, and I had to remind that I am also ashamed of you and your actions and that of your administration. I have not been outside the United States since you became president, to avoid showing my passport and avoid associating with you and your administration. Besides helping you monitor me by posting the sign near our home, I will help you find some terrorists that I know and I believe that they are threat to the safety and the security of the United States. You do not have to look far to find them and apprehend them, and if you do not soon, WE THE PEOPLE will some day soon. These terrorists are now in Washington and you see them every time you have a cabinet meeting and I am afraid you are one of them.
George,
Get the hell out of my life and take your FBI thugs from our neighborhood because they are not wanted.
Riad Hamad Riad Esolh a martyr for Palestine. (by Adib S Kawar)We were greatly shocked and saddened with the news of the murder of Riad Hamad Esolh. Riad’s body was found floating in Lady Bird Lake in Austin after he was reported missing since the beginning of the week. Riad was a dedicated man as chairman of the “Palestinian Child Welfare Foundation”, he was helping disabled children in Palestinian refugee camps, and he used to ask for my help to contact these unfortunate children to hand them financial help for medical treatment, education and food. I am sure that these young people and families who had highly appreciated Riad’s help and humanity shall be saddened and in tears with the dreadful sad news of Riad’s murder. We are sure it is a murder, and not a suicide, for a man who dedicated his life to help the unfortunate to recover from their sickness, complete their schooling, and have enough food so as to live a decent life, even in their retched refugee camps, would not commit suicide. He was helping people to live, then how would he take his own life!!! What shocked me was to hear that some security agents broke into his house and carried away with them his files and CDs and other things, I didn’t know what happened after that, but I was sure that he would be accused of supporting some “terror organizations” or “white washing money”! This is a big joke that Zionists and those who collaborate with them would want to see even disabled Palestinian children helped to overcome the hardships Zionism had brought them. We call on all those who are in a position to donate to Riad’s fund so as his good work will be continued, not to hesitate in doing so. I am sure that with continuing the hard and honest work shall make his soul rest in peace. Riad comes from a Beirut and lived in Beirut not far from the Palestinian refugee camps that surround Beirut, which see first hand their hardships, for who he decided extend his help to enable his Arab compatriots practice their Right of Return to their homes and land. God bless his soul. A friend that I had never met face to face, but heart to heart. AISD officials confirm that counselors are on hand at Clint Small Middle School on Monterey Oaks Boulevard in Southwest Austin. AISD officials would not comment on the reason counselors were called to the school, but parents told KVUE News that they were informed Thursday morning a teacher had been killed. They also told KVUE the teacher is Riad Hamad who was the technology teacher at the school. Parents said they did not know if a letter had been sent home about the teacher. KVUE News questioned AISD officials about the information, but officials said they could not say anything more than counselors were at the school. Body found in Lady Bird Lake (04/16)Austin police investigators Thursday said a body found near Festival Beach in Lady Bird Lake is that of an Austin ISD teacher reported missing earlier this week. Riad Hamad was the technology teacher at Clint Small Middle School on Monterey Oaks Boulevard in Southwest Austin. APD Sgt. Joseph Chacon said they have not ruled out foul play, but they believe that Hamad, who is a peaceful activist for Palestinian causes, may have committed suicide. They do not believe his activism was related to his death. Police say Hamad was seen walking from his car to the shoreline of Lady Bird Lake alone just before he was reported missing. Family members said Hamad was dealing with intense pressure and had been experiencing suicidal thoughts. His vehicle was found on the south shoreline. In a statement to the media, representatives said his family and friends are devastated by their loss. They said Hamad had been an AISD educator for 10 years and that he was pursuing a graduate level degree in educational technology. “He was a peace activist who worked tirelessly on behalf of those less fortunate than him and was loved and admired by many members of the local, as well as international community,” the statement said. Police are asking anyone who saw him to call them with information. A student told KVUE News the principal of Clint Small Middle School announced Thursday morning that Hamad had been found dead. Grief counselors were on hand to talk to students. This entry was posted in activism, Palestine and her occupier, US and tagged activism, activist murdered, Hamad, Palestine. Riad Hamad, who was active in the movement to stop the imprisonment of immigrant children, and to close the T.Don Hutto family prison at Taylor, was murdered Wednesday in Austin, Texas. There was nobody in Texas who worked more tirelessly for justice than Riad Hamad. A few weeks ago a gang of thugs broke into his house and stole his documents and computers, and it is probable that the murderers were members of the same gang. I had him for a keyboarding teacher in middle school. I will never forget all of the “Camel Booger” comments he made, or every time you walked by his room he told you go “get a hair cut”. I do not get why people can even think that he committed suicide; he was duck taped, and had a gunshot wound. I knew him well enough to know that he DID NOT commit suicide. The police also forgot to mention the knock on the door at 1:30 in the morning a week before, or the phone call asking “Where do you keep your Camel”.13. Dan | April 25, 2008 at 7:54 pm | Reply People want to believe there was a man behind the curtain. This man committed suicide, plain and simple. There is no evidence to support he was murdered. The APD never said it was investigating a “murder” only to quickly change their minds to cover it up. If I was the police, I’d be investigating this as a murder. Dan wrote: “There was no gunshot wound, no severe injuries, etc.” How could you possibly know that? Not a single report that I’ve seen has mentioned the cause of death. Again, you really expect people to believe that a man who had no apparent reason to kill himself bound himself up with duct tape and threw himself into a lake? I’ll grant you that Alex Jones should always be taken with a heaping spoonful of salt, but in this case, I do find the circumstances highly suspicious. 17. (credit: Maureen Clare Murphy)Meanwhile, several members of Congress have written to the Obama administration to express their concerns about violations in civil liberties as a result of earlier government actions toward Abudayyeh and other activists.
The freezing of the Abudayyeh family’s bank accounts on Friday, 6 May is the latest development in a secret grand jury investigation that has been launched by US District Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald’s office in Chicago. The freezing of the accounts has raised concerns that criminal indictments in the case may be imminent.“I was downtown [in Chicago] on Friday, I had parked my car in a garage and when I tried to use my debit card to get out, it was declined,” Hatem Abudayyeh, director of the Arab American Action Network, told The Electronic Intifada. “I talked to Naima right away and she said she had no access with her card either, so I had to call a friend in the [Chicago] Loop to borrow money to get my car out of the garage.” The next day the couple went to their bank branch, where the manager said that he had no information but that their accounts were frozen as a result of a government order. The Abudayyehs’ accounts were frozen just two days before Mother’s Day is observed in the United States. “We were planning on having lunch with my mom and her family, and I couldn’t buy flowers or anything like that,” Hatem Abudayyeh said. Last September, federal agents raided and searched the Abudayyehs’ home and confiscated the family’s belongings, including financial records and, as Hatem Abudayyeh told The Electronic Intifada last November, “everything that said ‘Palestine’ on it.” Federal agents also confiscated home videos that Naima Abudayyeh, a Palestinian immigrant, had recorded during a family visit to Palestine last summer. The Abudayyehs’ five-year-old daughter was present during the raid and the family was mainly confined to their small living room during the hours-long search through their home. That same day, federal agents raided several other homes and offices across the Midwest, serving subpoenas to 14 anti-war and international solidarity activists to appear before a federal grand jury in Chicago. After those activists refused to testify to a grand jury, saying that they were being unfairly targeted because of their work organizing in opposition to US foreign policy in the Middle East, Afghanistan and Colombia, nine additional activists were served subpoenas around the month of December.
The nine additional activists served subpoenas are all residents of Chicago and all are Palestinians or those who have organized in solidarity with the Palestinian people. The Electronic Intifada’s managing editor, Maureen Clare Murphy, was served a subpoena on 21 December. The subpoena issued to Murphy is not connected to her work with The Electronic Intifada, but likely targets her because of her Palestine solidarity activism. All 23 activists who have received subpoenas since September have refused to testify, despite risking being jailed for doing so. A grand jury, no longer in use anywhere outside the US, is an investigative tool that allows the government to compel citizens to testify even if they are not suspected of any crime. Activists targeted by these subpoenas, their lawyers, and their supporters, believe the government is using the grand jury as a form of political inquisition and intelligence gathering, targeting groups and individuals working for a more peaceful US foreign policy. Attack on the US Palestinian communityAccording to a statement made by the Committee to Stop FBI Repression and the Coalition to Protect People’s Rights and also distributed by the US Palestinian Community Network, “Not only does the government’s action [to freeze the bank accounts] seriously disrupt the lives of the Abudayyehs and their five-year-old daughter, but it represents an attack on Chicago’s Arab community and activist community and the fundamental rights of Americans to freedom of speech” (“Demand US Attorney Fitzgerald unfreeze the bank accounts of the Abudayyeh family,” 8 May 2011). Of the total of 23 activists who have been subpoenaed, seven are Palestinians from Chicago — home to one of the largest Palestinian communities outside of the Middle East. Scores of Arab community and Palestine solidarity organizations, as well as anti-war groups, civil liberties organizations and faith groups, have issued statements condemning the investigation and attempts to criminalize the Palestine solidarity movement in the US. The investigation for which the 23 activists have been targeted takes places in the context of widespread surveillance and repression of the Muslim and Arab communities in the US. And as The Electronic Intifada reported in November of last year, the investigation targeting the subpoenaed activists is just the latest chapter in a long history of US government attempts to criminalize Palestine community organizing and support work in the country. In December 2001, the US government shut down the largest Muslim charity in the US, the Holy Land Foundation, which sent direct humanitarian aid to Palestinians living under Israeli military occupation, amongst other places. Five defendants prosecuted in relation to the case are serving out lengthy prison sentences of 15 to 65 years (for more information, see the Holy Land Foundation case website). Other prominent Palestinian community organizers in the US who have been put on trial in recent years because of their work educating Americans about the impact of US military aid to Israel and raising funds for humanitarian assistance for Palestinians living under occupation are Dr. Sami al-Arian, Muhammad Salah and Dr. Abdelhaleem Ashqar. All three were acquitted by juries of US citizens of all terrorism and racketeering-related charges but have been charged with or convicted of obstruction of justice or contempt of court for refusing to name the names of other Palestinian activists in the US and in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip. Investigation into material support law violationsWhile the US government does not comment on grand jury investigations or even confirm that they are underway, search warrants used to raid activists’ homes last September indicate that the home invasions and subpoenas are part of an investigation into violations of the law banning material support for foreign terrorist organizations. The material support legislation was enacted under the Clinton administration, expanded with the PATRIOT act under Bush and expanded even further last summer after the Supreme Court ruled in Holder v. Humanitarian Law Project that political speech can be considered material support for foreign terrorist organizations if done in a “coordinated way.” The broad scope of the material support laws — especially after last summer’s Supreme Court decision — has provoked sharp criticism from civil liberties groups. Humanitarian agencies have also protested the breadth of the laws, saying it impacts their ability to carry out their work. Critics of the legislation have pointed out that had these laws been in place during the South Africa anti-apartheid movement, it would have criminalized the entire movement in the US. At the peak of the movement, the Reagan administration’s State Department placed Nelson Mandela’s party, the African National Congress (ANC), on the designated foreign terrorist organization list. The South Africa solidarity movement in the US took direction from the ANC. Undercover agent at center of caseThe basis of the investigation for which Abudayyeh and the 22 other activists have been targeted appears to be the word of an undercover law enforcement agent who infiltrated anti-war groups in Minneapolis. The agent, who went by the name of Karen Sullivan, became involved in the anti-war movement in Minneapolis around the time of the 2008 Republican National Convention — one of the largest anti-war protests in the US in years (“Who was Karen Sullivan?” City Pages, 20 January 2011). The 14 activists subpoenaed in September were all involved in organizing permitted marches to protest the convention. In addition to apparently surveilling activists, the undercover agent also disrupted their work. “Sullivan” elected to join an educational trip to Israel and the occupied West Bank in the summer of 2009. When she and the two women from Minneapolis with whom she was traveling arrived at Ben Gurion International Airport near Tel Aviv, they were detained and ultimately deported. The two women with whom the agent was traveling have since been subpoenaed to appear before a grand jury. The identity of the undercover agent has been confirmed in discussions between the activists’ legal team and the US attorneys. However, the undercover agent’s identity was not disclosed during the discovery process of the lawsuit filed by Mick Kelly — one of those raided in September — after Kelly was shot at close range and injured by a high-velocity marking device during one of the Republican National Convention marches. Attorneys representing Kelly, one of the organizers of the march, filed a motion in March of this year to reopen the lawsuit discovery process and subpoena “Sullivan” as she was present when he was shot (“Lawsuit against police violence at Republican National Convention to go forward,” Fight Back! News, 4 March 2011). Call to actionThe Committee to Stop FBI Repression and the Coalition to Protect People’s Rights are calling on supporters to call US District Attorney Fitzgerald’s office today to protest the ongoing investigation and the freezing of the Abudayyeh family’s bank accounts (“May 9: Demand US Attorney Fitzgerald unfreeze the bank accounts …”). Meanwhile, hundreds of concerned citizens have signed a pledge issued by the Committee to Stop FBI Repression to take action in the event of activists being jailed for refusing to testify to a grand jury or being indicted (Pledge to resist FBI, grand jury repression). Activists across the country have built a broad support movement that has seen trade union resolutions in support of the targeted activists from locals representing more than 600,000 workers in the US. They have also lobbied to elected representatives and several members of Congress have written letters to the Obama administration raising concern of the investigation’s violations of civil liberties (see “Statements from legislators about the case,” Committee to Stop FBI Repression). ..... Chicago gets ready for Rahm Emanuel's inaugurationMay 13, 2011 USA TODAYcontent.usatoday.com/communities/onpolitics/post/2011/05/rahm-emanuel-chicago-mayor-inauguration-/1....... Ill. high court: Emanuel can run for Chicago mayorBy DON BABWIN and DEANNA BELLANDI, Associated Press – 11 mins agoCHICAGO – The Illinois Supreme Court put Rahm Emanuel back on the ballot for Chicago mayor on Thursday, reviving his campaign to lead the country's third-largest city. The former White House chief of staff was thrown off the Feb. 22 ballot by an Illinois appellate court for not meeting a residency requirement because he hadn't lived in Chicago for a year before the race. The Supreme Court ruled unanimously in his favor. Emanuel lived for nearly two years in Washington working for President Barack Obama until he moved back to Chicago in October to run for mayor. Emanuel, who has said he always intended to return to Chicago and was only living in Washington at the request of the president, had asked the Supreme Court to overturn the appeals court ruling. Within minutes of the ruling, Emanuel was at a downtown Chicago public transit station shaking hands with residents. He never stopped campaigning as the controversy evolved. His spokesman said Emanuel was en route to the campaign appearance when he received word of the ruling and was scheduled to participate in televised debate Thursday evening. In their appeal, Emanuel's attorneys called Monday's appeal court ruling "one of the most far-reaching election law rulings" ever issued in Illinois, not only because of its effect on the mayoral race but for "the unprecedented restriction" it puts on future candidates. His lawyers raised several points, including that the appeals court applied a stricter definition of "residency" than the one used for voters. They say Illinois courts have never required candidates to be physically present in the state to seek office there. In its ruling, the Supreme Court called the appeals court's basis for deciding that Emanuel could not be on the ballot "without any foundation in Illinois law." The mayoral race and Emanuel's campaign had been thrown into disarray after the appellate court ruling on Monday. The following day, the state Supreme Court ordered Chicago elections officials to stop printing ballots without Emanuel's name on them. Chicago election officials said they had printed nearly 300,000 ballots without Emanuel's name before they abruptly stopped. Emanuel had been the heavy favorite to lead the nation's third-largest city, and had raised more money than any of the other candidates vying to replace Mayor Richard M. Daley, who announced he was retiring after more than two decades as mayor. After Monday's appeals court ruling, Emanuel had been pressing ahead with confidence and said was doubling his campaign by adding more stops to his schedule. Meanwhile, the other main candidates in the race — former Sen. Carol Moseley Braun, city Clerk Miguel del Valle and former Chicago schools chief Gery Chico — moved quickly to try to win over Emanuel supporters. The residency questions have dogged Emanuel ever since he announced his candidacy last fall. Emanuel tried to move back into his house when he returned to Chicago but the family renting it wanted $100,000 to break the lease and move out early. The tenant, businessman Rob Halpin, later filed paperwork to run for mayor against Emanuel, only to withdraw from the race a short time later. The Supreme Court was also impressed with Emanuel's testimony before the city's election board in which he listed all the personal items in the house he rented in Chicago when he moved to Washington — including his wife's wedding dress, photographs of his children and clothes they wore from the hospital as well as items belonging to his grandfather. "The Board determined that, in this situation, the rental did not show abandonment of the residence," the court wrote. "This conclusion was well supported by the evidence and was not clearly erroneous." More than two dozen people testified on the residency issue at a Chicago Board of Elections hearing in December. The three-day hearing got progressively stranger as attorneys gave way to Chicago residents who filed objections to his candidacy, including one man who asked Emanuel if he caused the 1993 siege at Waco, Texas. The Chicago Board of Election Commissioners and a Cook County judge has previously both ruled in favor of Emanuel, a former congressman, saying he didn't abandon his Chicago residency when he went to work at the White House. news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110127/ap_on_go_ot/us_chicago_mayor ......... ......... Speculation mounts over Obama aide Rahm Emanuel28 September 2010 Last updated at 12:39 ETThere is growing speculation in the US media that Barack Obama's chief of staff will leave the White House and run to be Chicago's mayor. Unnamed sources close to Rahm Emanuel are quoted as saying he will announce a decision as soon as Friday. No final decision has been made due to family considerations, the Associated Press reported. Mr Emanuel is a native of Chicago and represented Illinois's 5th district in Congress for six years. When he was appointed as chief of staff, some commentators drew attention to his reputation for abrasiveness. Pundits have tipped Mr Emanuel to replace Richard M Daley, since the latter announced on 7 September that he would be stepping down. On Monday, President Obama said: "I think that Rahm will have to make a decision quickly, because running for mayor of Chicago is a serious enterprise. And I know this is something he's thinking about."Mr Daley has been mayor of Chicago since 1989, the second-longest serving in the city after his father Richard J Daley. Mr Emanuel has made no secret of his desire, one day, to be mayor of Chicago."One day I would like to run for mayor of the city of Chicago," he said earlier this year. "That's always been an aspiration of mine even when I was in the House of Representatives." If Mr Emanuel does decide to leave, senior White House adviser Peter Rouse has been tipped to replace him, even if only on a temporary basis.Candidates to permanently replace Mr Emanuel include Deputy National Security Adviser Tom Donilon, and the vice-president's aide Ron Klain, and even former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle and ex-Clinton chief of staff John Podesta, Politico reported. Any decision on permanent replacement may not be taken until after November's mid-term elections.www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-11428979............... Profile: Rahm Emanuel28 September 2010 Last updated at 12:05 ETRahm Emanuel's appointment as chief of staff to President Barack Obama came after a long period as a powerful player in the Democrat party.A strategist and fundraiser in his early years, he spent six years as a congressman before becoming the president's right-hand man. Mr Emanuel, 50, has a reputation for a tough and aggressive style in the political arena, and has been dubbed "Rahmbo" by some in the US media. His abrasiveness has been the cause of negative news reports in the time since his appointment. But it was another member of his family who caused him difficulty soon after he took up the job. Mr Emanuel had to disavow himself from comments made by his father to an Israeli newspaper. Benjamin Emanuel managed both to suggest that his son would have a pro-Israeli bias and at the same time offending Arabs, saying: "Obviously he'll influence the president to be pro-Israel. Why wouldn't he? What is he, an Arab? He's not going to be mopping floors at the White House." Controversy struck again when the chief of staff was reported to have sworn and referred to some liberal activists as "retarded" in a private meeting. The remark drew fire from disabled groups as well as Sarah Palin. There was also negative coverage in March 2010 when Democrat Congressman Eric Massa complained that Rahm Emanuel had approached him in the gym showers, while naked, and harangued him over a budget vote.
"Do you know how awkward it is to have a political argument with a naked man? ... It's ridiculous," Mr Massa said. The role of the chief of staff is a vital one, acting as the President's most senior adviser, counselling him and attempting to get his proposals passed by Congress. He also guards the door to the Oval Office and needs to be able to say "no" when the president needs him to. Some Washington observers have portrayed Mr Emanuel as the "bad cop" to Mr Obama's "good cop". Mr Emanuel graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in New York in 1981 after turning down a dance scholarship. He received his Masters in Speech and Communication from Northwestern University in 1985. He launched his political career at consumer rights organisation Illinois Public Action. He has had a rapid rise up the party hierarchy since his election in 2002 as congressman for Illinois' Fifth District in Chicago. In his second term Mr Emanuel served on the House Ways and Means Committee, which is responsible for overseeing taxes, trade, Social Security and Medicare issues. He was appointed to serve as Chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in 2006. Under his leadership, the Democrats gained 30 seats in the House of Representatives, allowing them to gain control of the House after 12 years of Republican control. In 2007, he was elected to serve as the Democratic Caucus Chair, the fourth highest ranking Member of the House Democratic Leadership. Stories of Mr Emanuel's focus and determination are widespread around Washington and Chicago, and he has developed a reputation as an aggressive operator. He once confessed to the Chicago Tribune that he was acutely aware of how others thought of him: "I wake up some mornings hating me too," he told the newspaper. A practising Jew, Mr Emanuel's Israeli heritage has prompted positive headlines in Israel, where some were concerned earlier in the election campaign about the likely direction of Mr Obama's Middle East policy. The prospective chief-of-staff himself volunteered to serve in Israel's army during the first Gulf War of 1991 — rust-proofing brakes in northern military bases, Israeli media reports.Back in the US, Mr Emanuel became the director of finance for Bill Clinton's presidential campaign in 1992. Chicago speculationHe then went on to serve as a senior adviser to President Clinton from 1993 to 1998 - first as an assistant to the president for political affairs and then as senior adviser for policy and strategy. After his time in the Clinton administration, Mr Emanuel became a managing director for a leading global investment bank in Chicago, reportedly earning $16m. Mr Emanuel worked on Paul Simon's 1984 US Senate election and served as an adviser and chief fundraiser for Chicago Mayor Richard M Daley in 1989. When Mr Daley recently said he would stand down, speculation immediately started that Mr Emanuel would run to replace him, having privately said that mayor of Chicago was a dream job. A dedicated family man with a wife, Amy, and three young children, one of Mr Emanuel's main considerations in choosing whether to run for mayor will be the effect of uprooting his family from Washington. www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-11428981 The FBI Visits a Palestine Peace Activist (Austin, Texas) www.youtube.com/watch?v=ceQuQfkYYs4AustinActivistArchiv — June 12, 2010 — The Joint Terrorism Task Force Division of the FBI Visits an Austin Peace Activist to Question About Pre-Crimes. On April 21, 2010, two agents of the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) came to my house to talk to me, a part time peace volunteer for Palestine. After verifying that they really were with the FBI, I asked them to wait. I shut my door, took a deep breath, and grabbed my video camera.
In an ideal world what prevails is "the truth." Therefore, if you are innocent, you have nothing to fear since ultimately you will be found innocent. But the real world is not ideal; and what really counts in this world of ours is the "perception of truth." Powerful governmental institutions with insurmountable resources at their disposal in terms of skills, money, manpower, organization, computer systems, etc. can create a perception of truth that ends you up in prison—even though you are innocent. This is why there are innocent people in Death Row. Consequently, the only prudent answer, when interrogated by government officials, is to exercise your Right to Remain Silent, and request an attorney, specially, during the current times of political agitation and war hysteria.
I want to thank Jeffry Zavala for: * Helping me remain anonymous in this video * For creating something to help you if the FBI ever knocks on your door to question you about pre-crimes, * For helping me to tell others about my number one cause: Promoting the "One-State" Solution to the Palestine-Israel conflict, instead of the apartheid-like "Two-State" scenario.

Joe Chacon, the death of Austin schoolteacher and peace activist Riad Hamad remains under investigation. Riad Hamad Chacon says homicide investigators are "open to all possibilities" but that the initial investigation reflects that Hamad appears to have committed suicide. Hamad had been reported missing by his family on Monday night, April 14, and (partly by means of a cell-phone GPS search authorized by his wife) his car was found Tuesday afternoon in a parking lot off South Lakeshore Boulevard, on the south side of Lady Bird Lake. A land and water search turned up nothing more, but a little after 2pm on Wednesday, passersby on the hike-and-bike trail on the opposite (north) side of the lake, just east of the I-35 bridge, spotted a body floating near the shore. Hamad's eyes were covered in duct tape, his legs and his hands also bound – fueling Internet-amplified rumors that he had been murdered. According to a report that day by KXAN-TV news, "Park-goers who saw the body said the death did not look accidental. They said the man's face was wrapped with duct tape, and his arms appeared to be tied in front of his body."On Thursday, April 17, APD released a statement saying, "The bindings of his hands and legs and placement of the tape were consistent with Hamad having done this to himself." Chacon told the Chronicle that additional evidence – including a security videotape of the parking area where Hamad's car was found and statements from persons who knew him that "he had been experiencing suicidal thoughts" – also support a finding of suicide but that police are waiting for completion of the entire investigation, including the full autopsy and toxicology report, which will take several weeks. "For all intents and purposes, as far as we know right now," Chacon said this week, "this was a suicide." An autopsy was performed by Travis County Chief Medical Examiner David Dolinak, generating yet another controversy over official autopsy procedures. On April 17, when Hamad's body was transported by a funeral home from the medical examiner's office to the Islamic Center of Greater Austin on Manor Road, said Imam Ibrahim Dremali, it was in a "barbaric" condition, one that he had never seen in 20 years of preparing bodies for burial. Dremali said the body was seeping blood from one incision and was inadequately sutured, and in spots the flesh was torn as though "an animal might have attacked him." He said two experienced colleagues working with him "panicked" at the sight of the corpse and left the room, and he had to use towels and tape to clean Hamad's body and to pad the brain cavity and the torso, in order to make it presentable for burial. Later, he demanded and received a meeting with Dolinak and APD Chief Art Acevedo. Afterward, Dremali and Dolinak each told the Chronicle that they believe the meeting was useful and should lead to better medical examiner practices, but Dremali said he "cannot accept" the apology offered by Dolinak for any misunderstanding or mistakes. "I believe they were sending us a message," he said, "and that's what I told the people here [at the mosque], that they believe they do not have to respect the bodies of Muslims." Asked about Dremali's charges, Dolinak said that although there may have been some misunderstanding over his office's expectation that the funeral home would be doing the final, cosmetic preparations of the body, he insisted, "We did absolutely nothing on our part to show any intentional disrespect." He said they followed standard autopsy procedures and that he simply can't say what Dremali may have experienced in similar situations before. "In most cases, all the final preparations [of the body] occur at a funeral home," he said, "but as in any religion, there is a whole spectrum of practices, depending on the family's wishes. We'll certainly try to work with [local Muslim clerics] better on the next case." Dolinak also could not confirm what Dremali described as apparent facial bruising on the body. Hamad, who was originally from Lebanon but had lived in Austin for more than 30 years, taught business education and keyboarding at Small Middle School, was a graduate student at UT (already with several degrees), and was very active in Austin-based charity work aimed at easing living conditions in the occupied territories of Palestine – most specifically via the Palestine Children's Welfare Fund, through which he sold Palestinian crafts to raise funds for destitute Palestinian families. He was also very outspoken about international politics, objecting strongly to Israeli and U.S. policy in the Middle East. Partly as a consequence, he had been investigated by federal authorities, who asked questions of some of his neighbors, and in February, the FBI and Internal Revenue Service raided his South Austin home and seized 40 boxes of materials related to his charity work, reportedly pursuant to an investigation of alleged "wire fraud, bank fraud, and money laundering." Although no charges had been brought...

Riad, this is for you:50,000 Palestinians gate crash borderMon May 16, 2011 10:35AMFor the first time in 63 years of being outcast from their home land, some 50,000 Palestinians have flooded the border of Lebanon and Palestine.www.youtube.com/watch?v=VPlLc9uge-0Interview with Franklin Lamb, International lawyer at the Lebanese border with Palestine. Press TV speaks with Franklin Lamb, international lawyer participating in the NAKBA commemoration and witnessing the extraordinary scenes at the Lebanese border. Following is a transcription of that interview. Press TV: On this anniversary of NAKBA, so far we have 65 people injured and at least one person killed; we have reports of a journalist being critically injured in Gaza. We also have reports of 30 Palestinians hurt and four killed in Southern Lebanon. Do you think the Israelis are feeling they can get away with this violence without pressure or consequences from the international community? Franklin Lamb: I'm at Maruno rock and your report is not accurate. There are 7 killed and maybe 18 wounded. I'm standing in the midst of thousands and thousands of Palestinians pushing their way into Palestine. Thousands more are still arriving here even though the ceremonies have ended because they are arriving late from areas far away. Literally hundreds of buses have arrived. Hezbollah has arranged for 200 more buses to come from Syria; Palestinians from Syria. They are still arriving and I am amazed at what I am seeing. I've seen so many babies and so many pregnant women on so many buses here that you have to walk the last four or five miles up hills and through fields; there are people on crutches, old people. If there is anybody who thinks Palestine is not going to be liberated let them come to Maruno rock this May 15th.This is a historic event similar to the freedom marches America used to have in the 1960s civil rights movement -- the spirit is so great. This is a momentous historic event of NAKBA and the need to be liberated because of the Arab and Islamic awakening and this is part of that awakening. It's amazing -- I've been to a lot of demonstrations -- nothing like this. Nothing like this has occurred on the question of Palestine for the past 63 years. Press TV: On other occasions of the NAKBA there have been commemorations. So you're saying that it's starkly different from previous commemorations? Franklin Lamb: Yes. The Palestinians of Lebanon have virtually no civil rights, it's a huge crime. But they have never been allowed -- I see people now looking at Palestine crying -- they have never been allowed to come south of the Litani river by discriminatory laws passed by the Lebanese parliament. So what's unique about this and why it caught on is that this is the first chance in 63 years for many of these people crowded on hundreds and hundreds of buses to see Palestine. That's why it's different. What happened is certain objected to it, but the resistance of Palestinians said we're coming so they allowed them to come for the first time in more than half a century. They're sitting here and many want to go to Akka. If you stand on a pole here you can see Akka -- it's about 30 miles away from here, but you can see it. There are 250,000 Palestinians in Lebanon living in terrible conditions; I'm going to guess that there are at least 50,000 or 20% of the Palestinians in Lebanon here today and I think it's the beginning of a massive massive intifada.[/color] Press TV:[/i] From what you're describing and I think any human could possibly imagine not being able to go back to their homeland after being taken away; and as you said seeing it for the first time, the sheer emotion that you must be witnessing out there. Franklin Lamb: Exactly that. The young people have tears -- before they only heard stories from their grandfathers, but now they see it and they see the Zionist soldiers in their arrogance driving around and pointing guns. You can imagine what the resistance is thinking. I'm not predicting there's going to be an incident here, but the tension is very high. The ceremonies have been over for hours, but the people are still coming. There is no way to leave this area because there are so many buses and taxis jamming all of this part of southern Lebanon. It's amazing; the people are in great solidarity -- there are quite a few Europeans here and lots of Lebanese. Some people say they've had enough of the Palestinians, but there is lots of Lebanese here. Press TV: What is the goal of the people still coming out? Is it just to take a look or to continue a commemoration service? Franklin Lamb: I think the reason they're coming, beside the fact that the roads have been clogged, is that feeling of solidarity and the special connection with the rest of their brothers and sisters here who are literally thousands upon thousands. ------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- - *The Nakba: What Does It Mean in Human Terms?* <http://www.counterp unch.org/ karkar05172011. html> Sonja Karkar, CounterPunch 5/17/2011 /The Dead By Displacement/ The Nakba is the Palestinian catastrophe. It means upheaval, violence and cataclysmic loss; it describes the terror, which drove almost one million people out of their homeland, as well as the perpetual terror in exile --displaced, dispossessed, stateless, lost and forbidden to return; it remains the multiplying injustice of another people's sin burgeoning in our collective silence. For 63 years, the situation has dragged on, men and women holding the papers and keys to their former homes, clutching the faded and cracked photos of happier days: everything rendered obsolete by the artificial creation of a state for a foreign people on land that has been home to Palestinians for millennia. But if that is too distant in time and complex to touch your heart, then imagine for a moment yourself, wrenched from all that is familiar and everything you love, hastily running into the unknown grabbing only what you can carry from all the personal effects and mementos accumulated overyears, but sure that you will soon return, even if it is to pick up the pieces shattered by war or disaster and to begin again. Think of yourself going back only to find someone else opening your front door and shamelessly banging it shut on the pleas you should not have to make. Think of your street and neighbourhood, the same and yet not the same, as everything that once was so familiar is now given over to a people who have never walked before in the footprints of your forefathers. more.. <http://www.counterp unch.org/ karkar05172011. html>e-mail <mailto:?subject= The%20Nakba: %20What%20Does% 20It%20Mean% 20in%20Human% 20Terms?% 20&body=The% 20Nakba:% 20What%20Does% 20It%20Mean% 20in%20Human% 20Terms?% 20--%20http://www.counterp unch.org/ karkar05172011. html%20-- %20link%20courte sy%20www. vtjp.org>
*Israel's Nightmare: Nonviolent Palestinians* <http://www.agencegl obal.com/ Article.asp? Id=2562> Rami G. Khouri, Agence Global 5/18/2011 BEIRUT -- The simultaneous marches Sunday by thousands of Palestinian refugees who approached, and in places slightly breached, the Israeli borders, causing Israeli troops to open fire and kill over a dozen refugees, have been treated by Israel as an existential threat -- which is exactly what this is. The fact that the grandchildren of the original Palestinian refugees made this symbolic gesture on the anniversary of the dismemberment of Palestine and the creation of Israel in 1948 should worry the Israelis deeply, because it speaks volumes about the state of the Palestinian- Israeli conflict today. The symbolism of what happened Sunday is terrifying for Israelis, in fact far more terrifying than any military threat that Israel has ever faced, because it reflects three cardinal realities that mean only trouble for Israel. The first is that the element of time is working against the Zionist strategy of creating a powerful Israeli state that can either intimidate the Palestinians into forgetting about their rights to return to their homes in Israel, or simply generating hopelessness among the refugees that ultimately makes them give up their quest for repatriation or restitution. Time since 1948 has only turned the original 750,000 Palestinian refugees into 4.5 million refugees today whose attachment to their lands, homes and rights is stronger than ever. In this respect, Israelis who take a moment to reflect on the meaning of what happened Sunday should see in the acts of the Palestinians a compressed historical image of the Jews' own epic determination to return to their ancestral homeland in Palestine, after thousands of years of exile. The combination of historical memory, nationalist identity, and political activism is stronger than any military means that can be used to regain one's national rights -- as the Israelis should know from their own experiences and their own national struggle.more. . <http://www.agencegl obal.com/ Article.asp? *Discourse and Representation in the Post-9/11 World* <http://dissidentvoi ce.org/2011/ 05/discourse- and-representati on-in-the- post-911- world/> Dissident Voice: 17 May 2011 - After 9/11, the collective representation of Muslims in the world has been mediated by a misleading, yet cogent public discourse. Underscored by a narrative of fear, this discourse is constructed and preserved by an opportunistic political class and a craven corporate media. The West---namely Europe and North America---has embraced a series of distorted representations of Muslims around the world. These distortions have perverted the language employed in the analysis of the broader public in order to make sense of 9/11 and its analogues. While accepting the 2011 Tikkun Award from Tikkun magazine, Shaykh Hamza Yusuf of Zaytuna College, and one of the most influential Muslims in the West, called upon the religious communities to deal with the " negative externalities of religion ." An "externality" is an economic term used to refer to the unintended effects of a transaction, somewhat like how the term "blowback" is used in the intelligence. ..more <http://dissidentvoi ce.org/2011/ 05/discourse- and-representati on-in-the- post-911- world/>

Arafat adviser: Mitchell resigned over deputy's 'bias' Published yesterday (updated) 18/05/2011 13:45 Ma'an News AgencyGeorge Mitchell source: images.politico.com/global/news/110513_george_mitchell_ap_328.jpgRAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- A political adviser to the late president Yasser Arafat issued a statement Tuesday, alleging that US Mideast peace envoy George Mitchell resigned because of the "extreme bias" of his deputy Dennis Ross. Bassam Abu Shareef said Ross obstructed all US initiatives aiming to achieve progress in the peace process, and blamed the deputy's bias for Mitchell's resignation Saturday. Abu Shareef said senior American officials informed him that Mitchell viewed the appointment of Ross a step to obstruct the peace process. He added that Mitchell believed Ross was working against US interests. The official paraphrased comments he said were made by Mitchell during a meeting, where he asked: "How can Dennis Ross assist in the peace process when he refuses to meet with the Palestinians, when he despises their leadership and hates their president?" Abu Shareef also said Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu "rejects peace," and would have no part of a Palestinian state with Hamas in its leadership. "This means they are opening war on Palestinians and their nation," he added. COMMENTS:
1 ) Bob / US 17/05/2011 15:02 Big surprise! And who appointed Ross?
2 ) Lukas / AntiZionist 17/05/2011 17:29 Dennis Ross, the incompetent Zionist supremacist who has destroyed countless negotiations by being Israel's lawyer. Dennis Ross has a master's degree in Russian studies. Selected by Barack "no change" Obama. I sincerely believe that Mitchell is a decent person, working in a corrupt environment. Dennis Ross needs to go immediately. But of course AIPAC is holding Obama by the balls.
3 ) betz55 / USA 17/05/2011 18:46 GET RID OF DENNIS ROSS. This horses ass has been "negotiating" on behalf of Israel under the guise of 'negotiating for the US" for 30 years with nothing to show for his "efforts" except more illegal settler terrorist squats, land and resource grabbing from the Palestinians, and world disgust and enmity for the US. The Palestinians should refuse to deal with him too. After Obama let AIPAC get rid of Chas Freeman he had to go with someone AIPAC approved of. Obama is a coward, shame on him.
4 ) Yehuda Solomon / Israel 18/05/2011 00:56 "How can Dennis Ross assist in the peace process when he refuses to meet with the Palestinians, when he despises their leadership and hates their president?" d**n GOOD QUESTION. Better question: Why DIDN'T George Mitchell, being the chief U.S. MidEast envoy FOR 2 d**n YEARS, express his OBJECTIONS ABOUT DENNIS ROSS BEFORE NOW Did he believe his reservations should have been subordinated to Ross' role because of Ross' experience If so, Mitchell SHOULD HAVE QUIT LONG TIME BEFORE NOW.
5 ) delia ruhe / canada 18/05/2011 01:31 I keep waiting for this Obama-person to do something progressive -- assassinating OBL doesn't count -- but he just keeps knuckling under to pressure before it's even exerted. I have no doubt he will do his Uriah Heep act when he speaks at the AIPAC convention next week -- and thereby humiliate several million Americans, including many Jews.
6 ) matt / israel 18/05/2011 07:43 obama is our puppet. he does what we (israelies) tell him to do. we run america and take their money from their hard working men and women's taxes. god bless america. they have no clue of where their money go. typical americans, and they cry that they are broke and have no jobs for their citizens. ha ha ha ha.www.maannews.net/eng/ViewDetails.aspx?ID=388408&utm

Israel unblocks Palestinian fundsPalestinian Authority set to receive $86m in taxes, withheld by Israel following unity deal between Fatah and Hamas.Al Jazeera Last Modified: 16 May 2011 11:03The Palestinian Authority is due to receive tax revenue funds withheld by Israel since Palestinian factions agreed a unity deal earlier this month, according to Israeli officials. Approximately $86m in tax and customs revenues from ports and border was held after Fatah and Hamas agreed the deal. Israel justified the freeze on the grounds that some of the money would go to Hamas, which it considers a terrorist organisation. The money adds up to about a third of the PA's budget, and the freeze meant Palestinian government workers had gone without salaries . english.aljazeera.net/video/middleeast/2011/05/201151181018502978.htmlMonday's announcement came after a weekend of deadly clashes on the 63rd anniversary of the founding of Israel in 1948, dubbed the 'catastrophe' or 'Nakba' by Palestinians. english.aljazeera.net/news/middleeast/2011/05/2011515649440342.htmlThe freeze was originally justified by Israel's finance minister, Yuval Steinitz, who had suggested that "communal fund would finance the terrorist activities of Hamas, and we want it established that there will be two separate funds", although a separate fund was not created. On Monday, Israeli strategic affairs minister Moshe Yaalon explained: "We have unblocked the funds because we have established that the agreement between Fatah and Hamas has had no effect." But Yaalon, also a member of Israel's security cabinet, said the freeze could happen again. "We will continue to verify that the money is not going into the accounts of terrorist organisations. If we believe that is the case, we will stop the transfers again," he said. The freeze was widely criticised, drawing objections from UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon and European leaders, as well as some members of Israel's government, who called it a violation of the 1994 Paris accords, which require Palestinian tax and custom revenues to be handed over.Fatah and Hamas delegations are to meet in Cairo on Monday to discuss the formation of a new government, a senior Egyptian official said, quoted by Egypt's MENA news agency. The two factions are to "put in place a mechanism for immediate reconciliation, in particular the formation of a government of independent Palestinians," he said. "Egypt will help the two sides come to an agreement," over the choice of prime minister and the composition of the cabinet, the unnamed official said. BREAKING: FBI plans, interview questions discovered in raided activist’s homeSubmitted by maureen on Wed, 05/18/2011 - 16:52 Electronic IntifadaActivists in the Twin Cities today announced at a press conference that they were releasing a recently-found document that was left behind by federal agents when they raided Mick Kelly and Linden Gawboy’s Minneapolis home on 24 September 2010. The FBI confirmed to the Associated Press that the documents appear to be authentic and were accidentally left behind during the raid. The Committee to Stop FBI Repression said in a statement: FBI agents, who raided the home of Mick Kelly and Linden Gawboy, took with them thousands of pages of documents and books, along with computers, cell phones and a passport. By mistake, they also left something behind; the operation plans for the raid, “Interview questions” for anti-war and international solidarity activists, duplicate evidence collection forms, etc. The file of secret FBI documents was accidentally mixed in with Gawboy’s files, and was found in a filing cabinet on April 30. We are now releasing them to the public. The press conference was held at the office of the Twin Cities Anti-War Committee, which was raided the same day as the Kelly-Gawboy home. It is believed that the key used to raid the office was one that had belonged to a woman known as Karen Sullivan, now confirmed to be an undercover agent, and whose word appears to be the basis for the investigation. The investigation has so far targeted 23 activists — several homes in the Twin Cities and Chicago were raided on 24 September 2010 and 14 activists were subpoenaed that month. After they refused to testify before a grand jury, nine more activists — all of them active in the Palestinian community or involved in Palestine solidarity work — in Chicago were subpoenaed, including myself (I believe I have been subpoenaed because of my solidarity organizing in Chicago, not because of my work with The Electronic Intifada). All 23 of us have refused to testify before the grand jury. Last week we reported that bank accounts of one of the targeted activists, Palestinian community organizer Hatem Abudayyeh, and his wife were frozen but restored after a flood of phone calls were made to protest the move. The Committee to Stop FBI Repression statement adds: Taken as a whole, the secret FBI file shows the willful disregard for the rights of anti-war and international solidarity activists - particularly the first amendment rights to freedom of speech and association. The documents make it clear that legal activity in solidarity with the peoples of Colombia and Palestine is being targeted. The documents use McCarthy-era language, which gives one the feel that the 1950s red scare has returned. And finally, the documents show the chilling plans for the armed raid that took place at the home of Kelly and Gawboy on September 24, 2010. The documents show that public advocacy for the people of Colombia was the genesis of the FBI investigation. The ‘Operations Order’ for the FBI SWAT Team states “The captioned case was initially predicated on the activities of Meredith Aby and Jessica Rae Sundin in support of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, a U.S. State Department designated foreign terrorist organization (FTO), to include their travel to FARC controlled territory.” While we have no way of knowing if it was speaking tours or educational events on Colombia that got them so riled up, there is something we can state with certainty: There is nothing illegal about traveling to Colombia, or visiting the areas where the FARC is in charge. This is something that journalists, including U.S. journalists, do, and we have yet to hear of their doors being broken down. Upon returning from Colombia, Aby and Sundin spoke at many public events about their experiences. The FBI interview questions for Meredith Aby ask “1) Have you ever met Lilia [sic] Obando? 2) Where? 3) When? 4) Why?” Liliana Obando is a well-known Colombian trade unionist who spoke in the Twin Cities at an event organized by the Anti-War Committee. She received a visa to travel in the U.S. from the U.S. government. In addition to focusing on associational information and travel to Palestine and Colombia, the interview questions focus on the Freedom Road Socialist Organization: The FBI documents include 57 interview questions about Freedom Road Socialist Organization, the organization that some of those who were raided or subpoenaed to the Grand Jury are members of. The questions include; “Are you a member?” “How many members are there?” “Who are the leaders?” And on and on and on. It is like pages of the calendar have been turned back 60 years. The documents also show the amount of force used to raid the anti-war and social justice activists’ home. The committee says in the statement: In the documents, the “Operations order” for FBI SWAT for “Operation Principal Parts” the raid on the Kelly/Gawboy home has the word “DANGEROUS” in underlined bold type at the top of the page. FBI agents were told to bring assault rifles, machine guns and two extra clips of ammunition for each of their side arms. Two paramedics were to stand by in the event of causalities. Other documents include photos of Kelly and Gawboy, as well as pictures of stairs leading to their front door and the front door itself. What transpired on September 24 was this. Gawboy was awoken by the FBI pounding on the door. When she stated she wanted to see the search warrant, agents used a battering ram on the door, breaking the hardware and shattering a fish tank in the process. Gawboy was taken down the front steps in her nightgown while the FBI swat team entered her home. The justification for this armed home invasion is given in the “Operations plan” - “Kelly is believed to be the owner of an unknown number of firearms which may be at his residence…” Kelly, who learned to shoot while in Boy Scouts, owns guns - just like a lot of Minnesotans. The “Operation Plan” also claims that Kelly “offered to provide weapons training” - an outright lie that originated with the police infiltrator “Karen Sullivan” or a fiction writer at the FBI office. Those of us who have been ensnared in this fishing expedition have claimed from the beginning that activists are being targeted for organizing in opposition to US foreign policy in the Middle East and South America, and because of first-amendment activity like travel and association. The interview questions confirm that this is the focus. Imagine being asked any of the following questions — all listed in the document — knowing that if you are not able to answer them completely, you could be vulnerable to perjury or contempt-type charges (emphasis mine): “Have you, anyone from FRSO [Freedom Road Socialist Organization], or anyone you know, ever traveled to South America?” “Have you, anyone else from FRSO, or anyone you know, ever traveled to the Middle East? Gaza? West Bank? Israel?” And some questions are just incredible, like: “Have you ever taken steps to overthrow the United States government?” “What is your husband’s immigration status?” “What do you think of terrorist groups? Do you support them?” “Have you ever recruited fighters to the FRSO?” As the Committee to Stop FBI Repression concluded in its statement today: The bottom line is this: there can be no justification for the raid in the first place, and still less for it to be done by agents smashing doors and wielding machine guns. This is a recipe for people getting hurt or killed. The events of September 24 and the ongoing grand jury are not about “material support of terrorism,” as any normal person would understand it. What is happening is this: anti-war and international solidarity activists are being targeted for practicing our rights to speak out and organize. We have done nothing wrong. Our activism is making this world a better place. Two additional homes were raided in Chicago. To date, 23 anti-war and international solidarity activists have received subpoenas to appear in front of a Chicago Grand Jury headed by U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald. Taken as a whole, the secret FBI file shows the willful disregard for the rights of anti-war and international solidarity activists – particularly the first amendment rights to freedom of speech and association. The documents make it clear that legal activity in solidarity with the peoples of Colombia and Palestine is being targeted. She received a visa to travel in the U.S. from the U.S. government. She spoke about the sickening human rights violations that were being carried out by the Colombian government and its paramilitary allies. While we understand that the Colombian government is the third largest recipient of U.S military aid, and that government officials would prefer that that people here in the U.S. don’t get a chance to hear about human rights abuses committed with their tax dollars, the fact remains: there is nothing criminal in trying to learn the truth. The FBI is attacking the right of anti-war activists to speak out against U.S. foreign policy. Likewise, the “interview questions” make a big deal about delegations that visited Palestine. The Israeli authorities try to disrupt these trips because people return from them and expose the gross human rights violations that are carried out in the context of the military occupation. But once again – this is a legal activity that activists have every right to engage in. The documents show how the FBI investigation expanded outwards, starting with Colombia and soon focusing on Palestine. How did the FBI get involved? The most likely explanation is that an undercover police officer going by the name “Karen Sullivan” infiltrated the Anti-War Committee shortly before the 2008 Republican National Convention. Among the first people she met were Meredith Aby and Jess Sundin, who often spoke at public events about what they saw in Colombia. Karen Sullivan—the professional liar—then gave her reports to the FBI, paving the road to the September 24 raids. The New McCarthyismWhen Wisconsin Senator Joe McCarthy went on a red-baiting witch hunt in the 1950s, communists, socialists and progressives of all stripes were hounded out of jobs, housing, the entertainment industry and institutions of higher education. More than a few people were jailed for their ideas. The secret FBI documents indicate an investigation is underway that takes its cues from this shameful past. The FBI documents include 57 interview questions about Freedom Road Socialist Organization, the organization that some of those who were raided or subpoenaed to the Grand Jury are members of. The questions include; “Are you a member?” “How many members are there?’’ “Who are the leaders?” And on and on and on. It is like pages of the calendar have been turned back 60 years. In the United States there is a constitutional right to association. Like-minded people are allowed to form groups and political parties that promote their views. FRSO members, along with others, were very active in organizing the massive anti-war protests at the Republican National Convention. They participate in the labor movement, community organizing, and the anti-war movement too. And they advocate that capitalism should be abolished and replaced with socialism. Given the bank bailout, continuous wars and the economic crisis it is not unreasonable to see these activities and views as a breath of fresh air. “Dangerous” raidIn the documents, the “Operations order” for FBI SWAT for “Operation Principal Parts” the raid on the Kelly/Gawboy home has the word “DANGEROUS” in underlined bold type at the top of the page. FBI agents were told to bring assault rifles, machine guns and two extra clips of ammunition for each of their side arms. Two paramedics were to stand by in the event of causalities.
