FDA to consider approval of modified salmonBy MARY CLARE JALONICK, Associated Press Writer Mary Clare Jalonick, Associated Press Writer – 48 mins ago WASHINGTON – Federal food regulators pondered Monday whether to say, for the first time, that it's OK to market a genetically engineered animal as safe for people to eat. The Food and Drug Administration is holding two days of hearings on a request to market genetically modified salmon. Ron Stotish, CEO of AquaBounty, the Massachusetts company that made the marketing request, said at the meeting Monday that his company's fish product is safe and environmentally sustainable. Critics, however, call the modified salmon "frankenfish" that could cause allergies in humans and the eventual decimation of the wild salmon population. An FDA advisory committee is reviewing the science of the genetically engineered fish this week and hearing such criticisms as the agency ponders approval. The FDA has already said that the salmon, which grows twice as fast as its conventional "sisters," is as safe to eat as the traditional variety. Frankenstein's monster and a normal salmon This undated handout photo provided by AquaBounty Technologies shows two same-age salmon, a genetically modified salmon, rear, and a non-geneticallymodified salmon, foreground. (AP Photo/AquaBounty Technologies)Whether the public will have an appetite for it is another matter. Genetic engineering is already widely used for crops, but the government until now has not considered allowing the consumption of modified animals. Although the potential benefits — and profits — are huge, many individuals have qualms about manipulating the genetic code of other living creatures. Part of the two-day hearing will focus on labeling of the fish. It is possible that if the modified salmon is approved, consumers would not even know they were eating it. Current FDA regulations only require modified foods to be labeled as such if the food is substantially different than the conventional version, and the agency has said that the modified salmon is essentially the same as the Atlantic salmon. Play Video ABC News – FDA Reviews Genetically Altered Salmon news.yahoo.com/video/environment-15749659/21930738
Approval of the salmon would open the door for a variety of other genetically engineered animals, including an environmentally friendly pig that is being developed in Canada or cattle that are resistant to mad cow disease. "For future applications out there the sky's the limit," said David Edwards of the Biotechnology Industry Association. "If you can imagine it, scientists can try to do it." AquaBounty says it would be the first in the world to market genetically engineered fish. The company submitted its first application for FDA approval in 1995, but the agency did not decide until two years ago to consider applications for genetically engineered animals — a move seen as a breakthrough by the biotechnology industry. Genetically engineered — or GE — animals are not clones, which the FDA has already said are safe to eat. Clones are copies of an animal. With GE animals, their DNA has been altered to produce a desirable characteristic. In the case of the salmon, AquaBounty has added a growth hormone from a Chinook salmon that allows the fish to produce their growth hormone all year long. The engineers were able to keep the hormone active by using another gene from an eel-like fish called an ocean pout that acts like an on switch for the hormone, according to the company. Conventional salmon only produce the growth hormone some of the time. In documents released ahead of the hearing, the FDA said there were no biologically relevant differences between the engineered salmon and conventional salmon, and there is a reasonable certainty of no harm from its consumption. FDA scientists speaking Monday said there are very few differences between the modified and conventional fish. Critics have two main concerns: The safety of the food to humans and the salmon's effect on the environment. Because the altered fish has never been eaten before, they say, it could include dangerous allergens, especially because seafood is highly allergenic. They also worry that the fish will escape and intermingle with the wild salmon population, which is already endangered. They would grow fast and consume more food to the detriment of the conventional wild salmon, the critics fear. A wide range of environmental, food safety and consumer groups have argued that more public studies are needed and the current FDA process is inadequate because it allows the company to keep some proprietary information private. Modified foods are regulated under the same process used for animal drugs. "It is outrageous to keep this vital information secret," said Wenonah Hauter, director of the advocacy group Food & Water Watch. "Consumers have a right to know what FDA is trying to allow into our food supply." Dr. Michael Hansen, senior scientist at Consumers Union, the publisher of Consumer Reports, says the agency is relying on too little data, much of which is supplied by the company itself. European nations have been much more cautious in embracing engineered foods. Ruediger Rosenthal, a spokesman for Bund-Friends of the Earth Germany, said it is unlikely the modified fish would make it across the Atlantic for sale as many Europeans are very skeptical of genetically modified foods. AquaBounty CEO Stotish countered that the company has more than addressed critics' concerns, and his product has come under much more scrutiny than most food. "This is perhaps the most studied fish in history," he said. "Environmentally this is a very sustainable technology." The company has several safeguards in place to allay concerns. All the fish would be bred female and sterile, though a small percentage may be able to breed. They would be bred in confined pools where the potential for escape would be very low. In its environmental analysis of the fish released earlier this month, the FDA agreed with the company that there are enough safeguards in place. Stotish says the fish would be bred in better conditions than many of the world's farmed salmon, and could be located closer to population centers to help feed more people. The company has also said the increase in engineered salmon production could help relieve endangered wild salmon populations. The company is also arguing that the fish do not need to be labeled as genetically engineered, so the average customer would not know if they were eating the modified product or the conventional product. "This fish is identical to the traditional food," maintained Stotish. "The label could even be misleading because it implies a difference that doesn't exist." If approved, the fish could be in grocery stores in two years, the company estimates. ___ Associated Press Writer David Rising in Berlin contributed to this report.

PUBLIC UPDATE FROM EAGLES DISOBEY!
Eagles is continuing to receive letters asking why our policies have changed?
The policy changed because the Chief Operating Officer of Eagles Disobey, Inc., and the Operations' Director for Nevada TCG Holdings, FRANCES M.G. ORTIZ, changed the policy.
Period.
The Eagles Team will return to the Eagles Disobey email ( fmgo_eagles@yahoo.com ) within the next 48 hours. The entire team is with Drs. Dan and Marci as they support a family close to them who is undergoing some hard times, due to the death of a family member.
Eagles Disobey has also been asked "WHY AREN'T DAN AND MARCI ON THE SPEAKER'S LIST FOR THE IUFOC CONFERENCE, IN 2011?"
www.ufocongress.com
They aren't on the list because they aren't speakers doing the presentation. We are told that Mr. Michael Schratt, from "Open Minds tv" will be the speaker for the upcoming presentation about Project Aquarius.
DRS. DAN AND MARCI WILL BE AVAILABLE FOLLOWING THE PRESENTATION BY MR. SCHRATT, FOR A LIMITED TIME TO TAKE QUESTIONS AND PROVIDE ANSWERS ABOUT S4 IN THE MIDDLE 1990'S.
Shortly after Dan sat for an interview with Rob Simone at the IUFOC in Laughlin, Nevada, in 2008, WE INFORMED EVERYONE that neither Dan nor Marci would be again sitting for live interviews at a UFO conference, as "speakers."
Their names, as we understand it, will be made in passing by the IUFOC, as being available to Open Minds for the Q/A. Further, as we understand it, the questions will those picked by Mr. Schratt.
It is unlikely that either Drs. Dan or Marci will even be in the event hall during the presentation. They will probably only be visible to the public audience for the limited Q/A. (We have told everyone that their status has changed and that the limited appearance was agreed to, PRIOR TO, their status change. Their security is paramount.)
See who is the centerpiece in this image?
Is it D or M? No! It's Mr. Schratt.
D and M's focus, during the week in Ft. McDowell, will be the Isis beta testing.

Letter after letter: 'how's the beta testing going to work?'
Both on the front of Eagles Disobey and on an informational placard secured to the Eagles Disobey table in the vendor's area of the IUFOC, there will be a series of simple (very simple) instructions along with a cell phone number to be called, if you wish to participate in the PROJECT ISIS BETA TESTING.
Once you call that number, you will personally reach DR. MARCI.
Dr. Marci will instruct you on where to personally meet her, Dr. Dan, and (probably) one other person who will be in their company. (That other person is a very nice and sweet person but will probably not be personally identified to anyone.) You will likely be instructed to meet with the 3 people at a very close public location where beverages and fine food are served. You will be invited to have a beverage (cost totally taken care of by the Eagles), with the Eagles. (This is a limited chance to have a direct persional meeting with Dr. Dan! ) During the relaxed drink time, Dr. Marci will offer you a 1 page pre-testing survey to fill out. That survey includes a place for you to print your name. YOUR ID WILL NEVER BE CHECKED SO IF YOU DECIDE TO WRITE SOMETHING LIKE "JOE SMITH" OR "JANE SMITH" NO ONE WILL EVER KNOW OTHERWISE! Your report of your experience is what matters, not your ID. (We're trying to "help" people. That's what this is all about.)
The questions are very easy, such as: "What is your favorite color (if you have one)?"
Being this is a light/sound relaxation system, that could be important! ;D
Once done, you will be asked to fill out the waivers that are required of anything that anyone does in the business world nowadays.
Following doing so, and finishing whatever your "sipping" ;D you will be invited to take a walk with Drs. Dan and Marci (with the other person kind of "tagging along"), to the loication where the ISIS UNIT is waiting.
After about 15 or so minutes with the ISIS UNIT, you will again be asked to fill out a survey, but one much shorter than the one that was only 1 page! Dr. Marci will give you a personal gift as a "thank you" for participating in the testing. It is designed as a personal commemorative, and will probably also have Drs. Dan's and Marci's autographs somewhere on it (probably on back). (I know what it is. It has to do with ISIS, it can be worn, but I am not allowed to say more at this time.)
After completion, Drs. Dan and Marci will likely walk you from the location and wish you a great day!
YES! If you participate in the ISIS BETA TESTING you qualify to have a personal photograph taken with Drs. Dan and Marci, so if you want one: REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR CAMERAS! (While they aren't going to "drop off the earth" - Dan even speaking with Eagles Disobey members starting in 2011, there will be few chances to EVER AGAIN have a photograph with them. Ok, we've told you.)

A Good Day to Be a Wombatby Mike Krumboltz 2 hours agoWhat in the heck is a wombat? That's the question that a lot of very jealous people are sure to ask after learning about a man who left a considerable fortune to the Wombat Awareness Organization. Australian news outlets have gone wild about the story of an American man who left $8 million to the "non profit organisation specialising in large scale rescue and rehabilitation of the Southern Hairy Nosed Wombat." The donation will come in $1-million-per-year increments, starting next year. His family has asked, perhaps not too surprisingly, for anonymity. As Forbes.com writes, the man visited the organization several years ago and went on a tour of the surrounding areas, where he was shown wild wombats that had been injured, starved, or diseased. A rep for the group says the man was clearly moved by what he saw, and he never forgot the experience. Years later, a little-known organization is $8 million richer. PHOTO PROVIDED BY THE CHICAGO ZOOLOGICAL SOCIETY'S BROOKFIELD ZOO. 2007The organization's mission (which is about to get a lot easier) is, in their words, to promote "conservation and protection of fragmented (wombat) populations, developing new co-existence plans for landowners, lobbying for tougher regulations on culling and undertaking research into public opinion." The news spurred tremendous Web interest in the animals. Online lookup on "wombats" nearly doubled in 24 hours, and related lookups on "wombat pictures" surged into breakout status. So, what exactly is a wombat? According to the official site of the Wombat Awareness Organization, the animals, native to Australia, are "chubby, nocturnal, burrowing marsupials." Unfortunately for the wombats, they can be quite destructive to farmland, which is why they are often the target of fed-up land owners. There are regular reports of wombats being abused and killed, a top reason why saving them is a popular cause. This isn't the first time animals or animal organizations have been included in a wealthy person's will. Hotel icon and "Queen of Mean" Leona Helmsley famously left $12 million to her dog Trouble in 2007. Amazing, but $12 million is dog food compared to what a German Shepherd named Gunther III inherited in 1992. His owner, German countess Karlotta Libenstein, left the pooch $60 million. When Gunther III died, the fortune went to -- you guessed it -- Gunther IV. Of course, the generous gift to the Wombat Awareness Organization is quite different. It aims to help a species, not just one spoiled animal. All in all, not a bad day to be a wombat. buzz.yahoo.com/buzzlog/94024?fp=1

As staff exodus begins, Obama faces a season of transitionBy Holly Bailey – Thu Sep 23, 9:29 am ETWith just over five weeks to go before Election Day, no one can say what Congress will look like after Nov. 2. But we can be sure that change is coming to Washington, as momentum builds for a White House shakeup. Within weeks, President Obama may lose one of his closest advisers, Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel. As first reported by Time's Michael Scherer, Emanuel has signaled he could leave the White House as soon as the Senate adjourns — expected this week or next — to begin a campaign for mayor of Chicago. To make the ballot, Emanuel needs to gather 12,500 signatures by Nov. 22 — something he's legally prohibited from doing as a federal employee. (Photo of Emanuel and Obama: Pete Souza/White House)So far, White House aides aren't saying on the record what they expect Emanuel to do. A senior administration official tells The Upshot that nothing has been announced to staffers, but "no one would be surprised" to see Emanuel go before the midterms, in view of the Chicago mayoral deadline. The same staffer reports that fellow White House aides expect Obama to pick Pete Rouse, a White House senior adviser who served as Obama's chief of staff in the Senate, to be named acting chief of staff -- and possibly Emanuel's replacement when he goes. Already, the White House is in a season of transition, seeing the beginnings of a staff exodus that virtually every administration goes through near the two-year mark of a presidency. In the past three months, Obama has lost nearly every member of his original economic team, save for Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner — who is now facing some "will he stay or will he go" scrutiny of his own. Peter Orszag, Obama's budget director, resigned in July. Christina Romer, chair of the president's Council of Economic Advisers, left earlier this month. And this week, chief economic adviser Larry Summers announced he would leave the White House before the end of the year to return to Harvard. And it's unlikely these are the last staff members to go. As Obama prepares for his 2012 re-election bid, some of his political advisers, including David Axelrod, are expected to leave the administration next year and return to the campaign. That, in turn, could elevate Press Secretary Robert Gibbs, who would probably pass on briefing duties to his top aide, Deputy Press Secretary Bill Burton. There's also at least one expected shift in the Cabinet: Defense Secretary Robert Gates has signaled he will leave sometime in 2011, probably after the planned July 2011 drawdown of troops from Afghanistan. The big unknown is how much a GOP takeover of the House, the Senate or both would affect the White House's staffing decisions. A Republican sweep in November would represent a major shift in the American political landscape. In that scenario, would Obama staff up with advisers willing to go toe to toe with Republicans who have threatened to launch investigations into his administration and roll back health care reform? Or will Obama go for a more moderate approach and try to find areas of common ground with the GOP? Of course, another factor sure to influence a shakeup will be Obama's own bid for re-election in 2012. Obama advisers say the president is proud of his track record, having made good on 2008 campaign pledges to push through health care reform and new regulations on Wall Street. But he'll also be under pressure to account for other '08 promises that still await fulfillment -- most notably, his pledge to break partisan gridlock in Washington. If Republicans gain control of Congress, Obama will have to find ways of working with the other side, if only for the sake of preserving his own political future. While administration officials won't discuss Obama's thinking on staffing matters, some of the names now surfacing as possible replacements for Emanuel signal that the president will, at least, pursue a more low-key approach in dealing with the opposition party next year. Rouse, for one, is the virtual opposite of Emanuel — a behind-the-scenes operator who shies away from the limelight. The same profile holds for the other lead candidates for chief of staff, including Deputy National Security Adviser Tom Donilon and Phil Schiliro, currently the head of Obama's congressional lobbying team. Another name frequently mentioned: former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, whose bid to join the administration in 2009 was felled by tax problems. It's unlikely -- though not out of the question -- that Obama will go with an outsider. The president has made no secret of his preference for surrounding himself with people he already knows -- and knows well. But if November's elections prove to be as damaging for Democrats as polls predict, Obama could use the opportunity to bring in some fresh faces -- and push that oft-mentioned reset button for his own administration. news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_upshot/20100923/el_yblog_upshot/as-staff-exodus-begins-obama-faces-a-season-of-transition

Queen tried to get UK poverty fund to heat palaceAP By Raphael G. Satter, Associated Press Writer – 23 mins agoLONDON – A government fund intended to provide subsidized heating to low-income Britons got some interest from an unexpected source: Queen Elizabeth II, who wanted help paying the bills at Buckingham Palace. The official response, according to documents unearthed by The Independent newspaper, was that the handout might prove to be an embarrassment if word got out. The paper quotes an unnamed functionary as gently reminding the royal household that the money was meant for local authorities, housing associations, and the like. "I also feel a bit uneasy about the probable adverse press coverage if the Palace were given a grant at the expense of say a hospital," the paper quoted the official as saying. "Sorry this doesn't sound more positive." The newspaper said royal aides were looking for a way to pay the queen's spiraling utility bills, which had risen by 50 percent to more than 1 million pounds ($1.58 million) in 2004. A letter written that year and addressed to Britain's culture department asked whether the queen could get a community energy grant to upgrade the heating systems at Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle, the monarch's favorite weekend residence. Officials were receptive to the idea, but eventually decided against it, the paper said Friday, citing documents obtained under Britain's Freedom of Information Act. A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman confirmed that royal officials had explored the possibility of getting money under the program, saying it was part of an attempt to reduce both its burden on the taxpayer and improve the palaces' energy efficiency. She claimed the royal household was not initially aware that the money had been earmarked for low-income Britons. She spoke anonymously in line with royal policy. The queen's finances have been controversial in the past, with occasional debates about whether Britain's head of state — whose role is almost exclusively ceremonial — costs too much. The queen has royal residences across Britain, including Balmoral Castle in Scotland and Sandringham House in eastern England. Other residences, such as the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh and St. James's Palace in London, are used as offices or for functions. Still, the queen has a reputation for frugality and the monarchy has recently been keen to show it gives value for money. Taxpayers fund the royal household to the tune of 38.2 million pounds ($60 million) a year, which the royal website points out is only 62 pence (less than a dollar) per person. That amount doesn't include the cost of providing security for the queen and her family. Expensive or not, word that the royal household had toyed with the idea of trying to get money intended for some of the nation's poorest citizens had a medieval ring to it and the drew the ire of Republic, which campaigns for the abolition of the British monarchy. The group said the story provided "clear evidence of the contempt the palace has for ordinary people in this country." The report also raised eyebrows among some of those interviewed on the streets of north London Friday. Nick Bowring, a 23-year-old fitness instructor, said he didn't think the queen should get help paying her heating bills. "There are people who need it a lot more than she does," he said. But Ian Laming, a 49-year-old carpenter, disagreed, saying he didn't see why the government advised the palace not to apply for the funds. He said he admired the queen and was pleased when she volunteered to pay more taxes some years ago when royal finances were under scrutiny. "She helps a lot," he said, explaining that the monarch was big boon to the U.K. economy. "You just have to walk down to Buckingham Palace to see all the tourists." We have received many letters fearing that Dan, forget the title for this post, JUST "DAN," has been changed from his spiritual ways, because of the job he has taken at Marci's and other's requests.
In one word: NO. There's no changing this man.
Of course he has to react and fulfill the requirements of the job he now holds, but his personal Office (what we call the "Grotto" - he has two now plus a workroom Office) is constantly filled with the smell of freshly burned incense and when occupied is always lighted with candles, and always has the aroma of freshly extinguished candles. Before EVERY DAY begins, 5 people: a Rabbi with an Imam (of some kind), a Christian Minister (sometimes a Roman Catholic Priest), a Wiccan Priestess, and a rotating member of another Faith (such as Hinduism), or like this morning a member of Bahá'í, enter his work areas with an escort (usually Steven) and say a Blessing for the work done in the room to be in keeping with a positive path, and all people in the room or connected with it be Blessed to to work for the good of the People. They line up in the early morning, when Dan is not attending to work in the Grotto, and they are arranged by Fran on the schedule. Some people, for allergy reasons, find it impossible to work in the offices, due to the ambient incense and accommodations are made for them. Others have reacted negatively to Dan's requirements, and they find it very difficult to continue work because of it. They are either reassigned, their needs are dealt with by Fran, or they are told to go away. In one instance, an Atheist was allowed to enter the Grotto, and leave a written request that all work done by Dan and others in the Office be done ethically. The request was handed to Steven and Steven placed the request on the Desk of the Compass, for Dan to find. (Dan read the request and keeps it in the top center drawer of the Desk of the Compass.) NO MASONIC RITUALS ARE ALLOWED IN THE GROTTO, but if a Mason was to request to say a prayer in the Office, that request will be considered for inclusion as one of the "rotating people."
Dan changed? NO, NOT IN ANY WAY I HAVE SEEN, EXCEPT THE PRESSURE IS ENORMOUS.

intial report: CNN replaces its US chiefBy David Bauder, Ap Television Writer – 1 hr 44 mins agoNEW YORK – Struggling CNN has fired Jon Klein, the head of its U.S. network. CNN Worldwide President Jim Walton said Friday that Klein is being replaced by Ken Jautz, who currently runs HLN. The former Headline News Network has been a success in recent years with a switch to an opinionated prime-time lineup. Klein, a former CBS executive, has never been able to solve the puzzle of building a prime-time lineup competitive in the ratings. CNN badly trails top-ranked Fox News Channel, and MSNBC's switch to a left-focused talk lineup at night has also left CNN behind. The timing, however, is odd. Klein just remade CNN's prime-time lineup with an 8 p.m. ET show starring former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer, which debuts next week, and announced that Piers Morgan would take over Larry King's show. Walton also said a search is under way for a person who will serve as executive vice president and managing editor of CNN Worldwide. He said in a memo to staff members that the executive is needed to "put our multi-platform advantages more fully to work." Prime-time viewership is down at all the cable news networks this year, but the drop is largest at CNN. Its weekday average of 640,000 viewers is down 36 percent from 2009, and has put the network into third. Fox is averaging 2.43 million viewers, down 5 percent. MSNBC is down 11 percent to 846,000 viewers, but that still enabled the network to pass CNN, the Nielsen Co. said. HLN is averaging 554,000 viewers, off 16 percent. news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100924/ap_on_en_tv/us_tv_cnn_klein............ Report as of posting: CNN replaces its US chiefBy DAVID BAUDER, AP Television Writer David Bauder, Ap Television Writer – 8 mins ago NEW YORK – CNN's continued struggles with its prime-time lineup led to the firing Friday of Jon Klein, the U.S. network's top executive, less than two weeks before a schedule revamp he engineered was about to launch. Klein has been replaced by Ken Jautz, who currently runs HLN, said Jim Walton, CNN Worldwide President. CNN is also seeking another executive who will serve as executive vice president and managing editor of CNN Worldwide. CNN slipped behind MSNBC into third place this year in its prime-time ratings, where Fox News Channel remains a dominant number one. Cable news viewers have increasingly become interested in hearing news filtered through strong, partisan viewpoints and CNN has resisted that approach for fear it would hurt its brand as an impartial news source. The image of CNN as hurting particularly frustrates Walton, who noted that prime-time advertising accounts for only 10 percent of the company's revenue. CNN has been profitable for seven consecutive years during a disastrous time for the news industry, he said. "CNN is not broken," he said. "While we're not satisfied with the ratings at CNN prime time and they clearly need to get better, CNN as an organization and a business is thriving." Klein has held his job for six years, overseeing more aggressive news coverage and the development of Anderson Cooper and Sanjay Gupta as major personalities. The former CBS News executive said he's confident CNN is better today than when he arrived in December 2004. "I'm disappointed, but these things happen in the media business," Klein said, "and they happened to me this time." The timing was odd given that Klein's reboot of two-thirds of CNN's prime-time schedule was to begin on Oct. 4. That's when an 8 p.m. ET show hosted by former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer and newspaper columnist Kathleen Parker is to debut. In December, Larry King will leave CNN's prime-time lineup after a quarter-century, to be replaced in January by British tabloid veteran and "America's Got Talent" judge Piers Morgan. "I'm just disappointed that I didn't get a chance to work more closely or longer with Eliot and Kathleen and Piers," Klein said. "I was really looking forward to getting these shows up and running and fully prepared for being held accountable for their quality and their ratings and their profits. The surprise to me was that I never got a chance to do this." Walton said he made the move now to avoid disruptions to these programs after they started, and so that the executive change not be interpreted as any dissatisfaction with them. Klein received praise from a competitor on Friday. "Jon is a respected journalist and an expert in the digital realm," said Roger Ailes, Fox News chairman and CEO. "We've enjoyed competing with CNN during his tenure and I'm confident he'll be an asset to any news organization he joins in the future. I look forward to continuing our personal dialogue." Prime-time viewership is down at all the cable news networks this year, but the drop is largest at CNN. Its weekday average of 640,000 viewers is down 36 percent from 2009. Fox is averaging 2.43 million viewers, down 5 percent. MSNBC is down 11 percent to 846,000 viewers, according to the Nielsen Co. HLN, formerly CNN Headline News, is averaging 554,000 viewers in prime-time. Jautz was in charge of a transformation of that network, once known for its continuous "wheel" of half-hour newscasts. Its shift to a prime-time opinionated lineup began with current Fox personality Glenn Beck, and now features Nancy Grace, Jane Velez-Mitchell and Joy Behar. Jautz is a "smart, talented executive with the right personality and skill set to restore CNN's position in the cable news space," said Princell Hair, a former CNN executive now senior vice president for news operations at Comcast Sports. Walton said that CNN will not move in the same direction as Fox and MSNBC. "It's critical for the entire business of CNN Worldwide that we remain nonpartisan," he said. Walton appointed Scott Safon, CNN's chief marketing officer, to become HLN's chief executive. Despite Safon's non-news background, his role in Walton's inner circle exposed him to all facets of the business, Walton said. news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100924/ap_on_en_tv/us_tv_cnn_klein........ . ........ Zucker said in an interview with The New York Times that Comcast's chief operating officer, Steve Burke, had made it clear in a meeting two weeks ago that the company sought to move on with new leadership. Zucker presided over the downfall of the flagship NBC's prime-time lineup from its 1990s dominance in the "Friends" era to where it has been the fourth-place broadcast network. Yet NBC News has remained the strongest broadcast news division and the network continues to dominate in late-night programming. NBC Universal has done well financially with its owned networks; Zucker has said that NBC Universal is essentially a cable company now. NBC Universal owns the NBC and Telemundo television networks along with 26 TV stations; cable channels USA, Bravo, Oxygen, Syfy, CNBC and others; the Universal Pictures movie studio and Focus Features; theme parks in California, Florida and Japan; and has part ownership of online video site Hulu. NBC's experiment last season putting Jay Leno in prime time proved a spectacular failure, blowing up further when Conan O'Brien refused to move to a later time slot to accommodate Leno's return to the "Tonight" show. Zucker, 45, was an NBC wunderkind who started at the company in 1986 as a researcher for its Olympics coverage. He moved to the "Today" show and became its executive producer before the age of 30. The show dominated in the ratings behind Katie Couric, Bryant Gumbel, then Matt Lauer, becoming hugely profitable for the company. In an unexpected move, Zucker was sent to Hollywood to oversee NBC's entertainment division. He alienated many in California with his efforts to cut costs, but he remained a favorite of G.E. executives, who continued to move him up the company's corporate ladder. Zucker, in his e-mail, recalled the first day coming to work at NBC in August 1986. "It was humid and my shirt was soaking by the time I got there," he said. Zucker survived two bouts of cancer while at the "Today" show. "Sure, there have been ups and downs in the last quarter century," he said in his e-mail. "But when I step back and think about what we've been through, I feel nothing but pride and joy. It has been a great run and I've been incredibly fortunate." Brian Roberts, chairman and CEO of Comcast, said Zucker has "led the company with integrity and purpose. "The success of NBC Universal puts us in a wonderful position as we plan our joint venture with GE," Roberts said. "We wish Jeff well in his future endeavors." Comcast has been tightlipped in its plans for NBC Universal when it takes over. One name that has surfaced as a potential new executive there is Robert Greenblatt, the successful programming chief at Showtime who stepped down when his contract ended this summer. ___ Associated Press Business Writers Ryan Nakashima and Michael Liedtke contributed to this report. news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100924/ap_en_tv/us_nbc_universal_zucker

My deepest condolences to the members of his family and to his friends and to those at Eagles Disobey who knew him.
Someone once told me that having a loved one pass away is not the hardest thing to deal with, the hardest thing is keeping that loved on in our memories and hearts. To cherish their spirit and to keep them alive within ourselves. They are no longer in pain, or suffering. They are with a higher spirit, be that God, Allah, who whatever name you put to it.
They are in a place of peace, love and contentment. They will be waiting patiently for your return to the Father and will be watching over you. And when it’s our time to go to the Father, he will welcome us with open arms, for he will know all about who we are. For those who have gone before us will have told him of our lives and our spirits.
We weep not for them, but we weep for the loss of them in our lives. But the greatest challenge will be to always keep their spirit, their memories and their love deep in our hearts.

Speculation mounts over Obama aide Rahm Emanuel28 September 2010 Last updated at 12:39 ETThere is growing speculation in the US media that Barack Obama's chief of staff will leave the White House and run to be Chicago's mayor. Unnamed sources close to Rahm Emanuel are quoted as saying he will announce a decision as soon as Friday. No final decision has been made due to family considerations, the Associated Press reported. Mr Emanuel is a native of Chicago and represented Illinois's 5th district in Congress for six years. When he was appointed as chief of staff, some commentators drew attention to his reputation for abrasiveness. Pundits have tipped Mr Emanuel to replace Richard M Daley, since the latter announced on 7 September that he would be stepping down. On Monday, President Obama said: "I think that Rahm will have to make a decision quickly, because running for mayor of Chicago is a serious enterprise. And I know this is something he's thinking about."Mr Daley has been mayor of Chicago since 1989, the second-longest serving in the city after his father Richard J Daley. Mr Emanuel has made no secret of his desire, one day, to be mayor of Chicago."One day I would like to run for mayor of the city of Chicago," he said earlier this year. "That's always been an aspiration of mine even when I was in the House of Representatives." If Mr Emanuel does decide to leave, senior White House adviser Peter Rouse has been tipped to replace him, even if only on a temporary basis.Candidates to permanently replace Mr Emanuel include Deputy National Security Adviser Tom Donilon, and the vice-president's aide Ron Klain, and even former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle and ex-Clinton chief of staff John Podesta, Politico reported. Any decision on permanent replacement may not be taken until after November's mid-term elections.www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-11428979............... Profile: Rahm Emanuel28 September 2010 Last updated at 12:05 ETRahm Emanuel's appointment as chief of staff to President Barack Obama came after a long period as a powerful player in the Democrat party.A strategist and fundraiser in his early years, he spent six years as a congressman before becoming the president's right-hand man. Mr Emanuel, 50, has a reputation for a tough and aggressive style in the political arena, and has been dubbed "Rahmbo" by some in the US media. His abrasiveness has been the cause of negative news reports in the time since his appointment. But it was another member of his family who caused him difficulty soon after he took up the job. Mr Emanuel had to disavow himself from comments made by his father to an Israeli newspaper. Benjamin Emanuel managed both to suggest that his son would have a pro-Israeli bias and at the same time offending Arabs, saying: "Obviously he'll influence the president to be pro-Israel. Why wouldn't he? What is he, an Arab? He's not going to be mopping floors at the White House." Controversy struck again when the chief of staff was reported to have sworn and referred to some liberal activists as "retarded" in a private meeting. The remark drew fire from disabled groups as well as Sarah Palin. There was also negative coverage in March 2010 when Democrat Congressman Eric Massa complained that Rahm Emanuel had approached him in the gym showers, while naked, and harangued him over a budget vote.
"Do you know how awkward it is to have a political argument with a naked man? ... It's ridiculous," Mr Massa said. The role of the chief of staff is a vital one, acting as the President's most senior adviser, counselling him and attempting to get his proposals passed by Congress. He also guards the door to the Oval Office and needs to be able to say "no" when the president needs him to. Some Washington observers have portrayed Mr Emanuel as the "bad cop" to Mr Obama's "good cop". Mr Emanuel graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in New York in 1981 after turning down a dance scholarship. He received his Masters in Speech and Communication from Northwestern University in 1985. He launched his political career at consumer rights organisation Illinois Public Action. He has had a rapid rise up the party hierarchy since his election in 2002 as congressman for Illinois' Fifth District in Chicago. In his second term Mr Emanuel served on the House Ways and Means Committee, which is responsible for overseeing taxes, trade, Social Security and Medicare issues. He was appointed to serve as Chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in 2006. Under his leadership, the Democrats gained 30 seats in the House of Representatives, allowing them to gain control of the House after 12 years of Republican control. In 2007, he was elected to serve as the Democratic Caucus Chair, the fourth highest ranking Member of the House Democratic Leadership. Stories of Mr Emanuel's focus and determination are widespread around Washington and Chicago, and he has developed a reputation as an aggressive operator. He once confessed to the Chicago Tribune that he was acutely aware of how others thought of him: "I wake up some mornings hating me too," he told the newspaper. A practising Jew, Mr Emanuel's Israeli heritage has prompted positive headlines in Israel, where some were concerned earlier in the election campaign about the likely direction of Mr Obama's Middle East policy. The prospective chief-of-staff himself volunteered to serve in Israel's army during the first Gulf War of 1991 — rust-proofing brakes in northern military bases, Israeli media reports. Back in the US, Mr Emanuel became the director of finance for Bill Clinton's presidential campaign in 1992. Chicago speculationHe then went on to serve as a senior adviser to President Clinton from 1993 to 1998 - first as an assistant to the president for political affairs and then as senior adviser for policy and strategy. After his time in the Clinton administration, Mr Emanuel became a managing director for a leading global investment bank in Chicago, reportedly earning $16m. Mr Emanuel worked on Paul Simon's 1984 US Senate election and served as an adviser and chief fundraiser for Chicago Mayor Richard M Daley in 1989. When Mr Daley recently said he would stand down, speculation immediately started that Mr Emanuel would run to replace him, having privately said that mayor of Chicago was a dream job. A dedicated family man with a wife, Amy, and three young children, one of Mr Emanuel's main considerations in choosing whether to run for mayor will be the effect of uprooting his family from Washington. www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-11428981

Billionaire George Soros revealed as mystery J Street donor
American financier had criticized liberal lobby group's rival AIPAC for being too hawkish.By Natasha Mozgovaya 02:15 26.09.10 Haaretz.comWASHINGTON - Liberal Jewish lobby group J Street has received sizable donations from multi-billionaire George Soros, the Washington Times reported Friday. The American financier has in the past criticized J Street's rival AIPAC for being too hawkish. George Soros. Source: Bezinga.comThe daily reported that it had obtained tax reports by Soros and two of his children, Jonathan and Andrea, who had donated some $245,000 to the organization between July 2008 and June 2009. A spokesman for Soros did not deny the contributions and said Soros had never concealed his support for the group. J Street told the Washington Times that the Soros family has contributed to the organization $750,000 over the past three years.
"The contributions represent a third of the group's revenue from U.S. sources during the period," the Washington Times said. The paper also reported that a Hong Kong donor had provided as much as 50 percent of the organization's revenue in the same period. Soros, a Hungarian-born Jewish American, is one of the world's wealthiest people and one of its top philanthropists. He voiced support for J Street as early as 2008, when the organization was set up.J Street was formed by center-left American Jews aiming to counterbalance pro-Israel lobbying group AIPAC, seen by critics as hawkish and right-wing. "I accept responsibility personally for being less than clear about Mr. Soros' support once he did become a donor," J Street President Jeremy Ben-Ami said in response. "I said Mr. Soros did not help launch J Street or provide its initial funding, and that is true. I also said we would be happy to take his support. But I did not go the extra step to add that he did in fact start providing support in the fall of 2008, six months after our launch." "Those who attack J Street over the sources of its funding are not good government watchdogs concerned about the state of non-profit financing in the United States. If our critics are really so concerned with transparency of funding, then I challenge them to reveal the sources of funds for the organizations with which they agree," Ben-Ami said.J Street spokeswoman Amy Spitalnick told Haaretz "We never denied that Soros gave us money. C4 donors are supposed to remain private by law [to protect their privacy] .... No C4 discloses its donors," she said, referring to tax-exempt social welfare organizations." "What we did make clear was that, despite the rumors, Soros was not a founder or the primary funder of J Street. We always said we'd be happy to have his support and are indeed proud to have it." Spitalnick noted that the J Street family of organizations had raised $11.2 million from more than 10,000 donors in the last two and a half years."J Street has always said that George Soros did not found J Street and did not provide its initial funding - a decision about which he was very public before the organization's launching in 2008," she said. "In fact, the organization has received around $250,000 a year in funding from the Soros family since launching. We are not clear whether the Soros family will fund our work in the future, though we hope they will choose to do so." www.haaretz.com/print-edition/news/billionaire-george-soros-revealed-as-mystery-j-street-donor-1.315700Soros Donates $100 Million To Human Rights WatchSeptember 7, 2010 NPR—National Public Radio (U.S.) Morning EditionLISTEN HERE:npr.vo.llnwd.net/kip0/_pxn=0+_pxK=17273/anon.npr-mp3/npr/me/2010/09/20100907_me_06.mp3?dl=14 minutes and 48 secondswww.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=129693150....... by Korva Coleman NPRBillionaire financier George Soros has offered Human Rights Watch a staggering challenge grant of $100 million, saying he wants the U.S. based human rights advocacy group to find $10 million in matching donations each year for a decade. Soros spoke on Morning Edition, telling NPR's Steve Inskeep he began his philanthropic life with Human Rights Watch and doesn't want it to 'lose its initial zeal'. Soros: It's an American organization and that has become a throwback because America has lost the moral high ground for promoting human rights. So I want the organization to become truly international, with maybe, the American members in the minority. During the past 20 years, NPR has received $2 million dollars from Soros and his foundations. According to the New York Times, this is the largest donation Soros has ever made and the biggest Human Rights Watch has received. When questioned whether human rights organizations might have trouble lobbying a country such as China, with its global business interests, Soros agreed but returned to his first point of expanding the membership of Human Rights Watch: The U.S. has lost the moral high ground that the - under the Bush administration. There've been many human rights violations uh, committed by Americans. And that has sort of - endangered the credibility, the legitimacy, of Americans being in the forefront of advocating human rights. That is a big, big setback for the movement. ... Soros to Donate $100 Million to Rights GroupBy STEPHANIE STROM Published: September 6, 2010 The New York TimesGeorge Soros, the billionaire investor and philanthropist, plans to announce on Tuesday that he is giving $100 million to Human Rights Watch to expand the organization’s work globally. It is the largest gift he has made, the largest gift by far that Human Rights Watch has ever received, and only the second gift of $100 million or more made by an individual this year, according to the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University. “We’re seeing noticeably fewer charitable gifts at the $100 million level from individuals reported than we did just a few years ago,” said Patrick Rooney, the center’s executive director. “Between 2006 and 2008, an average of about 13 gifts a year of that size by individuals was reported. In 2009, it dropped to six, and this year, we know of only one other.” The largest known gift in 2010 was $200 million pledged by an anonymous Baylor University graduate, to be dispensed upon the donor’s death, for medical research at the university. Uncertainty about the direction of the economy has made even the wealthiest individuals more cautious about making big philanthropic commitments, Mr. Rooney said. Contrariness, however, is a hallmark of Mr. Soros, both as an investor and as a philanthropist. While others have held on to their money, he has made bigger gifts than ever. And he said in an interview that the gift to Human Rights Watch is the first of a series of large gifts that he plans to make. “This is partly due to age,” said Mr. Soros, who celebrated his 80th birthday last month. “Originally I wanted to distribute all of the money during my lifetime, but I have abandoned that plan. My foundation should continue, but I still would like to do a lot of giving during my lifetime, and doing it this way, with such size, is a step in that direction.” Last year, in the depths of the recession, Mr. Soros gave the Robin Hood Foundation, a charity that fights poverty in New York, a $50 million contribution that helped it raise significantly more than that amount. He also gave every family with children on welfare in New York State $200 to buy school supplies, a grant worth $35 million that enabled the state to gain access to some $175 million in federal money for which it would not otherwise have qualified. So far this year, Mr. Soros has donated about $700 million to various causes, including the gift to Human Rights Watch. His hedge fund, Quantum Endowment, grew 29 percent in 2009, earning him $3.3 billion in fees and investment gains. Human Rights Watch will use the gift to add about 120 staff members to its team of 300 around the world, expand translation of its reports and open new offices. The intent, said Kenneth Roth, the advocacy group’s executive director, is to increase its influence in emerging power centers. The group, which is based in New York, investigates and draws attention to human rights abuses around the world. Mr. Roth said that South Africa had more sway in Zimbabwe than the United States and other Western powers. Similarly, India, China and Japan are more influential in Sri Lanka. “We need to try to generate pressure on those governments, those emerging powers, now, which means expanding our capacity to deploy our information,” Mr. Roth said. Mr. Soros put it differently. “I’m afraid the United States has lost the moral high ground under the Bush administration, but the principles that Human Rights Watch promotes have not lost their universal applicability,” he said. “So to be more effective, I think the organization has to be seen as more international, less an American organization.” He said the gift to the organization was “also from my heart,” an acknowledgment of the training in human rights issues and philanthropy that he received from the group when he was just starting to emerge as a major donor. “Every Wednesday morning at 8 o’clock, a group at Human Rights Watch got together and discussed issues with the managers,” Mr. Soros recalled. “I was an active participant in that group, and human rights remains an important element of my foundation’s current activities.” Mr. Roth said few people then knew who Mr. Soros was. “We were just trying to figure out what we were going to do that week and so on, and he was just a guy at the meeting,” he said. The grant is structured as a challenge that asks the group to raise $10 million from new, primarily international sources, each year for the next decade, but Human Right Watch will receive the Soros grant regardless. Roughly 30 percent of its revenue comes from countries other than the United States, but less than 1 percent is from non-Western countries, where much of the organization’s work is focused. Mr. Soros wants to see the organization raise more money in places like Brazil, Mexico, India and China, which will be challenging, Mr. Roth said. “This is a transformative grant in more than one way for sure,” he said. A version of this article appeared in print on September 7, 2010, on page B1 of the New York edition. www.nytimes.com/2010/09/07/business/07gift.html?_r=1&scp=1&sq=human%20rights%20watch&st=cse....... HUMAN RIGHTS WATCH:www.hrw.org/George Soros to Give $100 million to Human Rights Watch
Challenge Grant From Open Society Foundations to Expand Global PresenceSeptember 7, 2010 Human Rights Watch(New York) – George Soros, philanthropist and financier, today announced a challenge grant of $100 million over 10 years to Human Rights Watch. The grant from his Open Society Foundations, the largest that he has ever made to a nongovernmental organization, will be used to expand and deepen Human Rights Watch’s global presence to more effectively protect and promote human rights around the world. The grant challenges Human Rights Watch, which accepts no government funding, to raise an additional $100 million in private contributions to match the gift. Human Rights Watch hopes that the combination of the grant and the matching funds to be raised, as well as additional fundraising, will enable it to implement a strategic plan for becoming a truly global organization. The plan will require Human Rights Watch to increase its annual budget from $48 million to $80 million within five years. “Human Rights Watch is one of the most effective organizations I support,” said Soros, founder and chairman of the Open Society Foundations. “Human rights underpin our greatest aspirations: they’re at the heart of open societies.” Soros said that he is particularly interested in encouraging philanthropists outside of the traditional supporters of human rights in Europe and North America. The grant is intended to support the internationalization of Human Rights Watch, enabling it to staff advocacy offices in key regional capitals around the world and to deepen its research presence on countries of concern. Human Rights Watch plans especially to increase its capacity to influence emerging powers in the global South to push a pro-human rights agenda. “Human Rights Watch can have even greater impact by being genuinely international in scope,” Soros said. “Human Rights Watch must be present in capitals around the globe, addressing local issues, allied with local rights groups and engaging with local government officials. In five years’ time it aims to have as much as half its income and a majority of its board members come from outside the United States.” By focusing international attention where human rights are violated, Human Rights Watch gives voice to the oppressed and holds oppressors accountable for their crimes. Human Rights Watch’s rigorous, objective investigations and strategic, targeted advocacy build intense pressure for change and raise the cost of human rights abuse. Since 1978, Human Rights Watch has fought for deep-rooted improvements in human rights practices and has helped bring justice and security to people around the world. “In an increasingly multi-polar world, we must ensure that Human Rights Watch’s message resonates in the most influential capitals around the globe,” said Kenneth Roth, executive director of Human Rights Watch. “Ending serious abuses requires generating pressure from any government with clout, including emerging powers in the global South.” With a staff of almost 300 and addressing human rights conditions in nearly 90 countries, Human Rights Watch publishes around 100 reports and several hundred news releases each year. The challenge grant will enable Human Rights Watch to invest additional resources to fill significant gaps in its reporting network, including in parts of Africa and Asia. It will also enable Human Rights Watch to add greater depth on issues where its research staff is spread too thinly. In addition, to maximize the impact of its research, Human Rights Watch would add staff to engage more effectively with national governments on local and regional issues of concern, and develop relationships with journalists who reach local audiences. By basing more researchers and advocates in key countries, Human Rights Watch will be better placed to engage with government officials, journalists, and civil society and better able to secure positive change. “We hope that George Soros’s example will help the human rights movement worldwide by encouraging philanthropists to invest in the ideals of human rights,” Roth said. www.hrw.org/node/92893.........
