another trouble-making child among the Nuseirat refugee camp's numerous
rabble-rousers. He was defined by a stream of snot that never seemed to
dry. Although loud at times, he had always been helpful and pleasant.
But now, unlike so many others who emerged from the camp's rusty
doors and narrow alleyways to greet me after my long absence, Mahmoud
was nowhere to be seen.
"He is in heaven now," said Abu Nidal. His voice, which had been
so cheerful about my arrival, suddenly became muffled. The years of hurt
over the loss of his son had culminated into one moment. He paused and
wiped tears.
A poster on the wall showed the face of a handsome, bearded man.
He had been killed during an Israeli army raid into Gaza a few years
ago. The poster dubbed him, "The Great Martyr Mahmoud Fa'iq al-Hajj."
I placed my right hand on Abu Nidal's shoulder and said, as is
customary in these situations: "We are all your children." Abu Nidal
nodded gratefully, and the neighbors began recalling the names of other
martyrs. Soon, we began to read Al-Fatiha, asking God to bless the souls
of all those who had perished in Gaza.

in September are at its center. A third intifada lies undeniably within
the game's gamble.
Kicked off by US President Barack Obama and Israeli Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu, the world is witnessing first hand either the
unfolding of a historic moment, or the beginning of a new violent
conflict. Or both.
Despite their powerful status at the diplomatic level, the US and
Israel only have two votes among 192 in the UN General Assembly. The
European Union has 27. Eyes and lobby are already turning towards
European countries. What will be Europe's move?
The recent EU-US crack
Recent exchanges have pointed to a EU-US divide on UN recognition.
While calling each other David and Barack, Cameron avoided what Obama
said about UN recognition in September. Instead the the UK Prime
Minister congratulated the president on his visionary speech setting the
1967 borders as the basis of negotiations.
While last week Obama publicly announced that the US would make
the argument against UN recognition "in our various meetings around the
world," it is crystal clear that with regards to this particular foreign
policy issue, the influence of the United States in Europe is waning.
Cameron's ignoring was a polite way of avoiding a second

Listening to Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu's speech to the US Congress the other day, I wrote this musical response.

For a long time now, every time I hear an Israeli patriot or apologist complaining that such-and-such a group or government won't recognize Israel as a Jewish state, I always wonder -- even if there is a good reason the Christians, Muslims and atheists of Palestine should live under some form of Jewish rule, how does one go about recognizing the legitimacy of a state that itself won't disclose exactly what its borders are? How does that work? Nobody seems to know. Ask the next Israeli you meet and see what they say. Where are your country's borders

Israeli troops battle (open fire on) protesters in Syria,
20 dead

MAJDAL SHAMS, Golan Heights – Israeli troops on Sunday battled (opened fire on) hundreds of pro-Palestinian protesters who tried to burst across Syria's frontier with the Golan Heights, killing a reported 20 people and wounding scores more in the second outbreak of deadly violence in the border area in less than a month.

The clashes, marking the anniversary of the Arab defeat in the 1967 Mideast war, drew Israeli accusations that Syria was orchestrating the violence to shift attention away from a bloody crackdown on opposition protests at home. The marchers, who had organized on Facebook, passed by Syrian and U.N. outposts on their way to the front lines.

"The Syrian government is trying to created a provocation," said Israel's chief military spokesman, Brig. Gen. Yoav Mordechai. "This border has been quiet for decades, but only now with all the unrest in Syrian towns is there an attempt to draw attention to the border."

There was no Syrian comment on why the protesters were allowed to storm the border, apparently undisturbed by authorities. But Syria's state-run media portrayed the event as a spontaneous uprising of Palestinian youths from a nearby refugee camp.

The protests began around 11 a.m. with what appeared to be several dozen youths, brought in on buses. It gained strength through the day.

By evening, the crowd had swelled to more than 1,000 people, who milled about, prayed and chanted slogans in an uneasy standoff with Israeli troops in the distance. The army bolstered its positions, posting a dozen armored vehicles and jeeps along the border road.

A small group of youths managed to cut through a recently fortified coil of barbed-wire and took up positions in a trench inside a buffer zone about 20 yards (meters) from a final border fence. Israeli troops periodically opened fire at young activists jumping into the ditch, sending puffs of soil flying into the air.

As the standoff stretched into the evening, Israeli forces fired heavy barrages of tear gas to break up the crowds. Hundreds of people fled the area in panic, while some 20 people laying on the ground received treatment. It was not immediately clear whether the crowd would return to the front lines.

At nightfall, crowds of people fell to the ground in Muslim prayer, and several small groups lit bonfires, indicating the standoff would continue.

Israel had promised a tough response after being caught off guard in last month's demonstrations, when troops killed more than a dozen people in clashes along the Syrian and Lebanese borders. In Syria, hundreds of unarmed protesters managed to breach the border and entered the Israel-controlled Golan for several hours.

The May 15 unrest occurred on the anniversary of Israel's birth in 1948, a day the Palestinians refer to as the "nakba," or catastrophe.

Sunday's clashes marked the "naksa," or setback, the term the Palestinians use for the defeat in the 1967 Mideast war. During that war, Israel conquered the Golan Heights from Syria, the West Bank and east Jerusalem from Jordan, and the Gaza Strip and Sinai peninsula from Egypt in just six days of fighting.

Israel returned Sinai to Egypt under a 1979 peace accord, and withdrew from Gaza in 2005.

The Palestinians seek the West Bank and east Jerusalem, along with Gaza, for a future state, while Syria demands a return of the Golan, a strategic plateau overlooking northern Israel which Israel has annexed, as the price for peace.

Still, until last month, Syria has steadfastly kept its border with Israel quiet for nearly 40 years, fueling the Israeli accusations that Syria was trying to draw attention away from the months of protests that have left more than 1,200 Syrians dead.

Ahead of Sunday's unrest, the army said it would deploy large numbers of forces, along with anti-riot weaponry like tear gas and water cannons, to prevent a repeat of the May clashes.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he ordered forces to show "maximum restraint," but also said Israel would protect its sovereignty.

"Unfortunately, extremist forces around us are trying today to breach our borders and threaten our communities and our citizens. We will not let them do that," he told his Cabinet.

The Israeli military said it used live fire only after firing warning shots into the air and issuing verbal warnings to protesters to stay away.

Protesters waved Palestinian flags and threw rocks and trash over the fence, and the sporadic pops of Israeli gunfire were heard throughout the day. The wounded were taken away on stretchers by groups of young men.

"We were trying to cut the barbed wire when the Israeli soldiers began shooting directly at us," Ghayath Awad, a 29-year-old Palestinian who had been shot in the waist, told the AP at the hospital.

Residents of Majdal Shams, ethnic Druse who remain Syrian citizens while living on the Israeli side of the frontier, watched the protest from rooftops, booing each time the military tried to speak and cheering on the protesters. When troops fired tear gas, a crowd of residents — some holding Syrian or Palestinian flags — began to scream and hurl stones from rooftops at the nearby forces. Israeli anti-riot police fired tear gas and moved into the town. Village elders with thick mustaches argued with the forces, but there were no signs of violence.

Throughout the day, ambulances raced to the hospital in the Syrian border town of Quneitra with the wounded and dead. State-run Syrian TV said 20 people were killed, including a woman and teenage boy, and 325 were wounded, 12 critically. Hospital officials confirmed the casualty count, providing names of all the dead.

Capt. Barak Raz, an Israeli military spokesman, confirmed that protesters made it through a first layer of the border fence — the area protected by barbed wire — but got no closer than 160 yards (meters) away from the final fence. He said the army would "continue to operate" throughout the night to prevent border breaches.

He refused to confirm reports that Israel had laid land mines along the area, saying only that the army "took measures to ensure we wouldn't allow any crossing into Israel."

The army claimed that protesters threw firebombs that ignited land mines on the Syrian side of the border. There was no confirmation from the Syrian side.

The recent protests have drawn attention to the plight of Palestinian refugees who fled or were expelled from their homes during Israel's war of independence in 1948. The original refugees, and their descendants, now number several million, and they demand "the right to return" to the families' former properties.

"We want on this occasion to remind America and the whole world that we have a right to return to our country," said Mohammed Hasan, a 16-year-old student who was wounded in both feet.

As a Palestinian living in Syria, he is likely the descendant of people who left or fled the area that became Israel during the 1948-49 Middle East war.

Israel opposes the return of these people, saying it would spell the end of the country as a Jewish state. The plight of the refugees and their descendants is one of the most difficult issues in any future Israeli-Palestinian peace accord.

Around half a million Palestinian refugees live across 13 camps in Syria, a country with a population of 23 million. Palestinians are allowed to work and study in government and private schools, but they do not have citizenship and cannot vote. In neighboring Lebanon, Palestinian refugees are largely discriminated against and banned from all but the most menial professions.

Things were relatively calm on Israel's other borders on Sunday.

About 400 Gazans hoisting Palestinian flags and posters gathered near the main passenger crossing into Israel, but riot police from Hamas, which runs the Gaza Strip, prevented them from marching toward the crossing.

At the West Bank's main crossing into Jerusalem, several hundred Palestinian young people tried to approach the checkpoint. They threw stones at Israeli forces, who responded with tear gas and rubber bullets. No major injuries were reported.

Palestinian organizers in Lebanon called off a planned march to the Israeli border after Lebanese authorities had declared the area a closed military zone.

A video posted on YouTube by the website Baladee.net shows marchers trying to evacuate injured and possibly dead people in the Golan Heights today after Israeli forces opened fired on marchers commemorating the 44th anniversary of Israel’s occupation of area which is part of Syria.

Media reports say that more than a dozen people have been killed and scores injured as Israeli forces opened fire on the marchers. (At least twenty people dead and 325 wounded. Please see report preceding this post.)

The video, which appears to have been shot from the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights toward the frontier line with the Syrian-controlled side, shows unarmed people in civilian clothes crawling over an earth mound and into an area of long grass and recovering several bodies of people who were injured or may have been killed.

Earlier, Israel broadcast threats by loudspeaker that it would shoot at protestors, and for several days Israeli commanders have promised a lethal response to mass civil protests.

The Israeli military has posted a video on YouTube threatening violence against unarmed protestors in Syria’s Golan Heights.

Media reports say that several people were shot and killed today as marchers commemorating the 44th anniversary of the Israeli occupation – the Naksa – gathered near the Israeli-controlled frontier between Syrian-controlled and Israeli-occupied sections of the Golan Heights.

The brief video titled “Warning Issued by the IDF to Rioters Near Majdal Shams” shows an Israeli soldier sitting in a vehicle speaking into a public address system in poor Arabic. There is no way to independently verify when or where the video posted on the Israeli army’s YouTube channel was taken or whether anyone could hear the threats of violence. The words of the Israeli soldier translated:

Young people, Stop! You are violating an international border. We warn you not to touch military targets. Anyone who attempts to touch our hegemony or targets is in danger and will be shot. Go back to Syria.

Contrary to the Israeli warning, there is no “international border” in the Golan Heights, which Israel has occupied since 1967. The entire territory is part of Syria.

In 1981, Israel purported to annex the Golan Heights however this was declared illegal by the UN Security Council. Resolution 497 states:

Reaffirming that the acquisition of territory by force is inadmissible, in accordance with the United Nations Charter, the principles of international law, and relevant Security Council resolutions,

1. Decides that the Israeli decision to impose its laws, jurisdiction and administration in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights is null and void and without international legal effect;
2. Demands that Israel, the occupying Power, should rescind forthwith its decision;
3. Determines that all the provisions of the Geneva Convention Relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War of 12 August 1949 continue to apply to the Syrian territory occupied by Israel since June 1967;

Israel’s posting of the warning may be an effort to justify, or create a pretext for the shooting of unarmed protestors. However such acts are very likely war crimes under the Fourth Geneva Convention.

In recent days as reports of planned protests circulated in the media, senior Israeli military commanders announced their intention in advance to use lethal force against civil protests.

Her case galvanized world opinion against Gadhafi and his record of alleged human rights abuses.

In March, al-Obeidi rushed into Tripoli’s Rixos Hotel where all foreign correspondents are forced to stay while covering the part of Libya under Gadhafi’s control. She shouted out her story of being stopped at a a checkpoint, dragged away and gang-raped by soldiers. As she spoke emotionally and as photographers and reporters recorded her words, government minders, whose job is to escort reporters around the area, jumped her and dragged her away.

She disappeared for several days, then turned up in Tunisia and later Qatar. She was rarely heard from until Thursday, when she was suddenly expelled from Qatar and ended up in Benghazi. Qatar offered no explanation.

Al-Obeidi has said she was targeted by Gadhafi’s troops because she is from Benghazi, the rebel stronghold. Her rape claim could not be independently verified. The Associated Press identifies only rape victims who volunteer their names.

Marwa al-Obeidi told The Associated Press that a human rights group aided by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton arranged for Iman and their father to travel in a private plane to the U.S. by way of Malta and Austria.

The State Department expressed concern for al-Obeidi’s safety after she was deported from Qatar. A U.N. human rights body called the deportation a violation of international law, because she was a recognized refugee.

Libyan authorities have alternately labeled al-Obeidi a drunk, a prostitute and a thief.

Libyan woman who claimed rape by Gadhafi troops traveling to US

BENGHAZI, Libya — A Libyan woman who claimed she was raped by Gadhafi troops has left Libya on her way to the United States, her sister said Sunday.

Marwa al-Obeidi says her sister Iman was flown out of Benghazi early Sunday morning. It was not immediately known where she was going in the U.S.

Her case galvanized world opinion against Gadhafi and his record of alleged human rights abuses.

In March, al-Obeidi rushed into Tripoli’s Rixos Hotel where all foreign correspondents are forced to stay while covering the part of Libya under Gadhafi’s control. She shouted out her story of being stopped at a a checkpoint, dragged away and gang-raped by soldiers. As she spoke emotionally and as photographers and reporters recorded her words, government minders, whose job is to escort reporters around the area, jumped her and dragged her away.

She disappeared for several days, then turned up in Tunisia and later Qatar. She was rarely heard from until Thursday, when she was suddenly expelled from Qatar and ended up in Benghazi. Qatar offered no explanation.

Al-Obeidi has said she was targeted by Gadhafi’s troops because she is from Benghazi, the rebel stronghold. Her rape claim could not be independently verified. The Associated Press identifies only rape victims who volunteer their names.

Marwa al-Obeidi told The Associated Press that a human rights group aided by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton arranged for Iman and their father to travel in a private plane to the U.S. by way of Malta and Austria.

The State Department expressed concern for al-Obeidi’s safety after she was deported from Qatar. A U.N. human rights body called the deportation a violation of international law, because she was a recognized refugee.

Libyan authorities have alternately labeled al-Obeidi a drunk, a prostitute and a thief.

More than 2,500 Israeli youth from settlement schools throughout the northern West Bank marched on Thursday 2 June through the Nablus District. The march, conducted under the title “Decade and Back”, was conducted under the auspices of the Israeli education system and marked the “year of Joseph’s Tomb” in the Israeli West Bank settlement schools.

In addition to hikes of varying lengths, the day further included children’s actors playing out biblical stories, particularly those related to Joseph, reports the settler-affiliated media outlet Arutz 7.

This march was conducted just four days after some 1500 Israeli settlers illegally entered Joseph’s Tomb in the Nablus area. Although this area is ostensibly under full control of the Palestinian Authority, the Israeli settlers and army did not request permission to enter or even coordinate with PA officials. Many of the settlers screamed racist slogans from the rooftop of the tomb while others entered Nablus itself, attacking local homes.

Addressing the children at the conclusion of the march, Samaria Municipal Council Head Gershon Mesika said that “In the march we all saw this beautiful area of ours and how much open space there is to establish more flourishing communities…throughout Samaria. With God’s help we can return to Joseph’s Tomb.”

Attacking Homes and Shouting Racist Slogans

1500 Israeli settlers illegally entered the Nablus-area Joseph’s Tomb on 29 May. Although ostensibly there to pray, numerous settlers screamed racist slogans whilst others attacked nearby homes. Settler attacks in this area have increased of late while the Israeli army continues to provide cover for the settlers and their racist violence.

On Sunday night, 29 May, some 1500 Israeli settlers illegally entered the Joseph’s Tomb area in the Nablus district, protected by 50 Israeli military jeeps.

Joseph’s Tomb is a holy place for Muslims, Christians and Jews and is located in Area A. According to the agreement between Palestinian and Israeli authorities, Jewish worshipers are allowed to visit the site only with previous coordination between Palestinian Authority and Israeli security forces. In recent years, however, Israeli settlers have entered this holy site illegally, without Palestinian coordination and permission. The settlers should reach Joseph’s Tomb in order to pray, but often they arrive to attack Palestinian homes and residents in the nearby streets. The Israeli army, which on Sunday provided the settlers with 1500 permits to enter the site, protects the settlers even when the latter attack Palestinians, yet another example of the clear cooperation between settlers and soldiers.

This occurred also on Sunday night, when 1500 Jewish worshipers came to Nablus without any coordination with Palestinian authorities. Although Nablus is ostensibly under full Palestinian civil and military control, the Israelis side didn’t coordinate or ask permission from the Palestinian forces but simply informed them that a military unit was entering the area.

During the night, around 50 of these “worshippers” occupied the roof of Joseph’s Tomb, screaming racist slander against Arabs. At the same time, 200 settlers entered in the city of Nablus and attacked several Palestinian homes located near the tomb. Palestinian residents were prevented from leaving their homes to reach a safer area by the Israeli army. Earlier that same evening, Israeli security forces closed all the checkpoints in the Nablus district in order to prevent Palestinians from leaving the city, thus providing yet more coverage for the settlers’ aggression.

Israeli violence in and around the Joseph’s Tomb area has increased over recent months. Jewish settlers enter the site without permission in order to attack Palestinians and their homes. One of the most common targets is Ma’zoz Masri, the nearby secondary girls school. Settlers enter the school in the middle of the night, damaging pipes, computers and trees in the school yard.

23 Martyrs Including a Child, a Woman and a Journalist, over
350 Injured in Israeli Attack against Syrian and Palestinian Citizens
near Occupied Golan

QUNEITRA, (SANA)- Minister of Health Dr. Wael al-Halqi said that the number of martyrs who fell on Sunday due to the Israeli attack on scores of the Syrian and Palestinian youths who gathered close to the occupied Syrian Golan borders on the anniversary of June Naksa (Setback), left 23 martyrs including a child, a woman and a journalist.

In a statement to SANA, Minister al-Halqi said that 350 people received gunshot wounds from the Israeli attack and that 256 others inhaled gas and suffered contusions.



He added that most of the inured were treated at Mamdouh Abaza Hospital in Quneitera, while 74 were transported to Damascus hospitals. 68 ambulances helped transport the injured, 53 of them belonging to the Health Ministry, 10 to the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, and 5 for disaster relief.

The Minister also noted that two centers for donating blood were opened at Mamdouh Abaza Hospital.

The martyrs are Mahmoud Awad al-Sawan, Ahmad Mahmoud al-Said, Majdi Zeidan, Alaa Hussein al-Wahish, Muhammad Deeb Issa, Ahmad Yaser al-Rajdan, Said Hussein Ahmad, Ahmad Mahmoud al-Hajah, Abdel Rahman al-Jareedeh, Ramzi Said, Fayez Ahmad Abbas, Fadi Majed Nahar, Jihad Ahmad Awad and Enas Shreitah, Thaer Hamid, Wasim Dwah, Shadi Hussein, Ibrahim Issa, Izzat Muswada, Mohammad al-Ashmawi, Mahmoud al-Arja and Ali Ashmawi.



Director of Mamdouh Abaza Hospital in Quneitera Dr. Ali Kanaan confirmed that the number of martyrs reached 23, saying that 52 surgical procedures were performed under general anesthesia while 42 procedures were conducted in the emergency room.

"We received also more than 350 injured persons, including suffocation cases," added Dr. Kanaan.

"Surgical operations were conducted to some of them whose condition was critical," Dr. Kanaan pointed out, asserting that all the young men were exposed to live bullets by the Israeli forces close to the occupied Syrian Golan borders.



The heroes fell as martyrs and wounded to say to the whole world that, in Golan and Palestine, there is a land for us that we will not abandon, that we will not be stingy to offer blood to liberate it… there, behind these barbed wires we deserve to live.

SANA correspondent in Quneitra said "the Israeli occupation forces used live bullets and tear gas bombs against the young men who want to return to their occupied lands."

The correspondent reported more injuries as the Israeli occupation forces set fire near the barbed wire and fired at firefighters, rescue men and the gathered youth to prevent them from reaching the occupied Golan.

He added that the Israeli forces targeted the gatherings with phosphorus bombs and spread snipers along the barbed wire to hold back the Syrian and Palestinians youths who continued in their attempts to cross the barbed wire into the occupied Syrian Golan from various areas opposite to the occupied Majdal Shams village.



Muhammad Shheiber, one of the young men who crossed the barbed wire, said "We already know that the Israeli occupation forces have increased the landmines and will face us with fire, but we insist on our right to return."

"I have always dreamed of returning to Golan. Here I am so close to achieve my dream," added 28-year old Shheiber, stressing that "hoisting the Syrian flag instead of the occupation flag is my biggest dream."

The liberated Syrian captive Ali Younes, Head of the Committee for Supporting Syrian Captives and Detainees in Israeli Jails, said "What we are seeing today make us feel pride and honor that the moment of liberation is very close."

Other participants wondered why the United States and human rights organizations overlook what took place on Sunday when Israel used live ammo and deployed its tanks and artillery against unarmed youths, noting that Israelis opened fire before they even crossed the barrier, with snipers firing randomly on participants.



Mayor of the occupied Golan Issam Sha'lan said "The meeting of the occupied Golan people with their brothers who are trying to pass the barbed wire stresses their shared common dream and destiny, whereas the Israeli soldier in between, despite being heavily armed, appeared so weak and frightened facing those unarmed young men."

Director General of the General Administration for Palestinian Arab Refugees Ali Mustafa said that what the Israelis did isn't unusual considering their criminal history, adding that the Syrian Palestinian youths repeated for the second time their defiance of Israeli barriers and barbed wire, confronting bullets with their bare chests to affirm their right to restore their lands.

Chairman of the Movement for the Return of the Palestinian Arab People Ali Abu al-Hasan said that Israel's massacres date back to more than 80 years, and that Israel continues to pursue its terrorism by murdering innocents, displacing people and stealing their lands.



Abu al-Hasan added that the occupied Syrian Golan will be the gateway into the occupied Palestinian people and that Syria will remain the bastion of resistance, resilience and liberation.

In turn, Governor of Quneitra Khalil Mashhadieh said that Israel's crimes proves to the world its insistence on murdering unarmed innocents who came to claim their legitimate right to restore their occupied lands, adding that Syria's national strategy includes the full liberation of the occupied Arab lands and supporting the Palestinian people and the Palestinian cause.

Hundreds of Palestinian and Lebanese Mark
Naksa Day in South Lebanon

Hundreds of Palestinian and Lebanese youth gathered at the eastern entrance of Adaisseh village in South Lebanon to mark the 44th anniversary of June Naksa.

The National News Agency of Lebanon said that the crowds raised the Palestinian flags and chanted slogans against the Israeli occupation and its practices, insisting on returning to their occupied land.

The Agency reported that Israeli occupation army members were deployed along the eastern borders of South Lebanon and the occupied Shebaa Farms, and infantry soldiers were spread as well, protected by Merkava tanks and armored infantry carriers.

The Agency said that the Lebanese army and UNIFIL forces have taken precautionary measures in the areas of Kfarshuba, Birkat al-Naqqar and Shebaa to face any developments.

Reports from the occupied Jerusalem said that the Israeli occupation forces attacked hundreds of Palestinian youth who marched from Kalandia Camp, north of the occupied Jerusalem, towards the Israeli military barrier at the entrance of the camp to mark Naksa Day.

The Palestinian News Agency Ma'an reported that many Palestinians were injured when the Israeli soldiers fired live and rubber bullets and tear bombs against the marchers to prevent them from moving forward.

On the 44th anniversary of Naksa (setback) Day, Palestinians and especially in Syria marked this anniversary on Sunday with protests near the Golan Heights in which the Israeli occupation fired on the protesters and martyred 23 people.

Official news agency SANA quoted Health Minister Wael al-Halki as saying the death toll included a woman and a child, adding that another 350 people suffered gunshot wounds.

Three weeks ago Israeli occupation soldiers shot dead 13 Palestinian protesters in Lebanon and Syria during protests marking the Nakba "catastrophe" of Zionist entity’s founding in 1948.

Sunday's protest was held to mark the 1967 war, when Israel occupied the Golan Heights, as well as the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

Palestinians in Syria marched down from a hilltop overlooking the Druze village of Majdal Shams on Sunday to the border with occupied Palestine.

14 Palestinians killed in
Syria camp on Monday

Fourteen Palestinian refugees were reported killed and another 43 injured on Monday, a report from the Palestinian government’s WAFA news said.

The victims were part of a massive group in Al-Yarmok, an unofficial Palestinian refugee camp in the Syrian capital of Damascus, mourning the death of between 10-23 Palestinians by Israeli fire on the Golan Heights ceasefire line the day before.

Angered over the failure of camp leaders to organize demonstrations marking the Naksa, the anniversary of Israel’s occupation of the West Bank, Gaza, and Golan Heights, an estimated 100,000 mourners were said to have attacked the headquarters of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine – General Command.

Reports said the party’s leadership refused to participate in the Naksa Day events, but encouraged camp residents to do so. Tensions had already been high in the camp, according to Palestinian sources in the area, because of a divide in the support of leaders for the Syrian regime, and many camp residents who support pro-opposition groups.

Militants with the PRFL-GC reportedly opened fire on the crowd, who were taken to a local camp hospital for treatment. The report cited hospital staff saying 14 were pronounced dead.

During the clash, mourners reportedly set fire into the PFLP-GC headquarters, and demanded (sic) condemned the group for its use of weapons against the crowd.

On Sunday, thousands gathered on the Syrian-Israel ceasefire line in the Golan Heights and attempted to breach the frontier in a march of Palestinian refugees and their supporters demanding an end to Israel’s occupation of the West Bank, Gaza and the Golan Heights, taken over 44 years ago that day in the 1967 War.

Syrian television said Israeli soldiers fired on the unarmed group, killing 23, while Israel says 10 were killed by Syrian landmines along the ceasefire line.

The event was a repeat of 15 May protests marking the Nakba, when some 800,000 Palestinians were displaced from their homes and villages during fighting that accompanied the declaration of the state of Israel. Four from Syria and ten from Lebanon were killed by Israeli fire in protests on that day.
