I was looking forward to hearing this because "Poker Face" was stuck in my head from my bus ride earlier, where it was playing over the PA system. I wanted it out of my head, but I guess I'll just retool the words instead. (Coincidence? or synchronicity...?)

"Jews emigrating to Palestine were given a special opportunity to remove their capital by the so-called Ha'avara agreement. This agreement was concluded by the German Reich and the Jewish Agency for Palestine. In form it was a modified clearing arrangement. Under its terms a Jewish 'capitalist' who wanted to emigrate to Palestine was permitted to make a contract with a German exporter for the transfer of goods from Germany to Palestine. The German exporter was paid with funds drawn from the blocked account of the emigrating Jew. The emigrant received his Palestinian currency from the Jewish Agency upon arrival in Palestine. >> edited for length[/quote] ZIONIST RELATIONS WITH NAZI GERMANYBY FARIS GLUBB © 1979Chapter 4 The 1938 Emigration AccordsThe year 1938 was to prove a triumphant one for Hitler. Its highlights included his annexation of Austria and the Munich Agreement, the diplomatic capitulation of the British and French Governments which enabled the Nazis to dismember Czechoslovakia. These successes emboldened the Nazis to intensify their campaign to force the Jews out of Europe, and the acquisition of new territories brought more Jews, in large numbers, within the scope of this campaign. The end of the year witnessed the notorious pogrom known as the Kristallnacht. Munich synagogue after Kristallnacht www.boerner.net/jboerner/?p=15167Berlin synagogue following Kristallnacht www.boerner.net/jboerner/?p=15167Jews arrested during Kristallnacht line up for roll call at Buchenwald, 1938 wapedia.mobi/thumb/127f503/en/fixed/470/353/1938_Jews_arrested_during_Kristallnacht_line_up_for_roll_call_at_Buchenwald.jpg?format=jpgFront page of The New York Times following Kristallnacht. It is relevant to remind ourselves here of the precise goal of which Hitler never lost sight throughout this period. This was summarised eloquently by two Jewish legal experts, shortly before the intensified campaign was launched, in these words: "The avowed aim of the National Socialist Government is to force the emigration on a vast scale of the 'non-Aryan' population of Germany. This objective is being attained through a systematic programme of discrimination and humiliation which is calculated to induce the flight from their homes of hundreds of thousands of individuals." (31) German Jews crowd the Palestine Emigration Office in an attempt to leave Germany. Berlin, Germany, 1935. all-history.org/391.htmlHowever, the agreements reached hitherto with Zionism were not adequate for Nazi purposes, and the pace of emigration was considered too slow, as this account indicates: "The central Jewish organisation known as the 'Zentralauschuss der Deutschen Juden fru Hilfe und Aufbau;... was established in 1933 in the Reich. That body had three principal divisions dealing with emigration, economic assistance, and relief and it was the special function of the office for economic assistance to assist in the change of vocation and the training of the young... At the time of writing (October 1935) there are ten training camps, with a total of 2,700 young men and women the larger number are instructed in agriculture. The German Government constantly makes difficulties and threatens the complete dissolution of the camps, on the pretext that Jews may not be assisted to prepare for manual occupations in Germany. It is hoped, therefore, to enlarge the youth emigration to Palestine, so that thousands may go each year." (32) Between Home and Homeland: Youth Aliyah from Nazi Germany By Brian Amkraut Publisher: University Alabama Press, June 6, 2006We have already noted above that the Nazis had allowed the Zionists to establish special training schools to prepare emigrants for life in the Middle East. What the common interests of both parties now required was a speeding-up of emigration, and measures to bring the training programme under tighter Zionist-Nazi control. The Zionists sent special envoys to make the necessary arrangements, while the Nazis held constant meetings to plan their strategy for the expulsion of Jews. "In the course of the first session of the steering committee of the 'Central Office', on 11 February 1939, Heydrich explained that Germany had no reason to give up sending illegal transports of emigrants to Palestine. www.geschichteinchronologie.ch/eu/D/EndJud_juden-in-Deutschland-05-3R-1933-1939-ENGL.html"Illegal transports, Heydrich continued, would in any case set out for Palestine from several European countries. So Germany could have recourse to the same procedures. Hinrichs and Eisenlohr, from the Wilhelmstrasse, far from raising any objections, insisted on the contrary that 'Germany should profit from any occasion offered to her to throw a Jew out.' Wohlthat did not lag behind. 'Palestine could absorb some 800,000 to one million extra Jews,' he reported having heard in London, 'and if the Jews of Germany did not go there, other countries could well provide this contingent.' "Since the end of December 1938, two delegates from Palestine, Pinhas Ginsberg and Max Zimels, had been working without intermission on the territory of the Reich preparing illegal convoys to Palestine. The Gestapo would put no obstacles in the way of their activity." (33) Two Zionist writers, who refer to Ginsberg by his nickname "Pino", relate how the Jewish Agency sent him to meet the Supervisor of the Jewish Question at the Gestapo Headquarters: "He was on a special mission; his work was what the Nazis wanted; his aim was to organise the emigration of German Jews to Palestine; only with the assistance of the Nazi leaders could this project be carried out on a large scale. The Gestapo 'Supervisor' was now interested. He called in three other Gestapo officials. The interview had become a conference; the Gestapo was discussing how to aid and increase Jewish 'illegal' immigration into Palestine against the will of the British Mandatory." Ginsberg accordingly requested Gestapo assistance for his scheme. The interview concluded, he left the Gestapo HQ to go to the Zionist Organisation's Berlin office. "By the time the emissary reached the Zionist offices, excited officials told him that the Gestapo answer was waiting for him. He could stay. He could start work at once. He could even pick young Jewish pioneers who had been sent to concentration camps. He would not require to pass through the endless red tape of official channels. He could set up special training camps for the selected immigrants who would make the illegal run to Palestine through the British blockade... He had brought with him his long spoon; he was not worried that now he was about to sup with the devil. In fact he felt no little satisfaction as he read the Gestapo reply." (34) 51 Documents—Zionist Collaboration with the Nazis Edited by Lenni Brenner Publisher: Barricade Books (November 1, 2002)Also during 1938, just after the Anschluss, the Zionists sent another envoy, Moshe Bar-Gilad, to Vienna on a similar mission. "Bar-Gilad, like his colleague in Berlin, soon discovered that the only road to large-scale emigration from Austria led through the Gestapo headquarters and the S.S. office for Jewish affairs for which the sumptuous mansion of Baron Rothschild had been requisitioned. There, in charge of the 'Central Bureau for Jewish Emigration', sat Captain Carl Adolf Eichmann. It was a name which was to become notorious... He received Bar-Gilad politely; he was also impressed by the forthright self-assurance and blunt speech of this unusual visitor. Adolf Eichmann, SS official in charge of deporting European Jewry. Germany, 1943. — DIZ Muenchen GMBH, Sueddeutscher Verlag Bilderdienst www.ushmm.org/wlc/en/article.php?ModuleId=10007412 "Bar-Gilad explained that he wanted permission to establish pioneer training camps to train young people for work in Palestine and to arrange for their emigration as quickly as conditions permitted... A dissident Zionist group, the Revisionists, rightwing activists, were engaged in illegal transports to Palestine. Bar-Gilad explained that Revisionists took primarily those Jews who could pay the heavy cost of illegal transportation, while his organisation was interested in young people who were prepared to become pioneers. Most of them had no means. His organisation would bear the entire cost. He wanted no financial help from the Gestapo; all he asked was that his work should not be obstructed." Two weeks later, Bar-Gilad received Eichmann's answer to the Zionist movement's requests. "Eichmann told him that he would help in the provision of farms and facilities to set up training centres for intending emigrants, but the actual transportation must be left to the Revisionists, the dissident Zionists and to 'private enterprise'... Bar-Gilad could not agree to the exclusion of transportation from his province. But as regards training facilities Eichmann kept his promise. He supplied farms and farm equipment. On one occasion he expelled a group of nuns from a convent to provide a training farm for young Jews. By the end of 1938 about a thousand young Jews were undergoing training in these Nazi-provided camps. Moosbrunn, Wein, Austria, 1939, A zionist training camp. collections.yadvashem.org/photosarchive/en-us/71826_1130.htmlThese two emissaries were official representatives of the "Union of Communal Settlements" which, within the Zionist movement, carried out work for the establishment and strengthening of kibbutzim. These settlements, as is now becoming widely known, are paramilitary in character. The agreements which these envoys reached through their contact with the Gestapo and SS, whereby Nazi Germany made a vital contribution towards reinforcing Zionism's manpower, training and consequent military effectiveness, were not an informal arrangement. They were solemn agreements officially, though secretly, entered into by the Nazi Government: an alliance of convenience ordered in a policy directive by Hitler himself. "Hitler's decision was communicated by the Foreign Affairs Office of the Nazi Party to all Ministries concerned. They were told that the Fuhrer had decided again that 'Jewish emigration from Germany shall continue to be promoted by all available means. Any question which might have existed up to now as to whether in the Fuhrer's opinion such emigration is to be directed to Palestine has thereby been answered in the affirmative.'" (36) The existence of this official Nazi policy was also confirmed by the Jewish historian Hannah Arendt, in her description of Eichmann's work in Vienna in 1938: "Eichmann's task had been defined as 'forced emigration', and the words meant exactly what they said: all Jews, regardless of their desires and regardless of their citizenship, were to be forced to emigrate — an act which in ordinary language is called expulsion. Whenever Eichmann thought back to the twelve years that were his life, he singled out his year in Vienna as head of the Centre for Emigration of Austrian Jews as its happiest and most successful period." (37) Adolf Eichmann to the headquarters of the SD (SS Security Service) with reference to the expulsion of Jews from Austria, 21 October 1938 www.ghwk.de/2006-neu/room4-2.htm
“Re: emigration of Jews from Austria — You are hereby informed that the number of Jews whom the Central Office for Jewish Emigration has got to emigrate has increased to 350 per day. The exact number of persons of Jewish faith to have emigrated from Austria up to 30 September 1938 is 38,000. (…) Of these 38,000 Jews, around 15,000 are in European Countries, 2,103 have gone to Palestine, 3,220 to South America and 18,500 have emigrated to other overseas countries. — Eichmann, Director of the Central Office for Jewish Emigration” [/blockquote] Apart from all its other unpleasant aspects, the persecution of Jews was also a lucrative form of big business. It is common knowledge that many Nazis amassed large fortunes, generally out of the property or slave labour of their victims. What is less widely known is that the Zionist organisers of emigration, through their collaboration with the Nazis, also took their share of material benefits at the expense of individual Jews. "Eichmann therefore sent Jewish functionaries abroad to solicit from the great Jewish organisations, and these funds were then sold by the Jewish community to the prospective emigrants at a considerable profit — one dollar, for instance, was sold for ten or twenty marks when its market value was 4.20 marks" (38) Thus philanthropy, administered by the Zionist movement, became highly profitable. However, the aim of all the Zionist "rescue" operations and agreements with the Nazis was hardly humanitarian, as is evident from the account of the missions of Bar-Gilad and Ginsberg. "These two Jewish emissaries had not come to Nazi Germany to save German Jews: that was not their job. Their eyes were fixed entirely on Palestine and the British Mandatory. They were looking for young men and women who wanted to go to Palestine because they wanted a national home of their own and were prepared to pioneer, struggle and, if necessary, fight for it. Their interest in those German Jews who turned to Palestine as a haven of refuge, as the next best after the United States or the United Kingdom, was secondary to their main purpose.... "Their end was to them far more important than the means which they were now compelled to employ; and though they could not see the future, nor imagine what it would bring, they had no qualms about the price they had to pay so long as they managed to get their Jews to Palestine." (39) "Come to Palestine""Visit Palestine — See Ancient Beauty Revived""Visit Palestine"
1936 — "Visit Palestine" was originally designed by Franz Kraus and published by the Tourist Association of Palestine, a Zionist development agency. We see the vast walled city of Jerusalem: trim parks, green gardens, urban dwellings, and a central landmark, the Dome of the Rock mosque. With this one poster pulled out of the Zionist attic, three core myths are debunked. The first myth is that Palestine had ever been a land without people. Obviously someone lived in these houses and someone tended these gardens. The second myth is that Palestine was a vast desert awaiting cultivation. The resplendent tree in the foreground suggests that the land surrounding Jerusalem was much more than barren desert. The third myth is that there never was a Palestine. Of course there was a Palestine, and here it is, called by name in a Zionist-published poster. johnlknight.blogspot.com/2007_05_01_archive.html [/blockquote] The signature of the "common interests" agreements between the Nazis and the Zionists, through the efforts of Ginsberg and Bar-Gilad, was followed by implementation. The reluctance of large numbers of German Jews to uproot themselves at the behest of Zionism had to be overcome by persuasion which the Nazis were quite willing to provide. "The beginning was slow but the grim night of November 9th, 1938, during which the Nazis carried out their organised riot of arson and assault on German Jewry convinced the German Jewish leaders that emigration, by any means at their disposal, remained their only hope. "As this realisation dawned on the Jewish masses, Jews from all over Germany began to stream to Maineckestrass*, applications for emigration flooded the offices of Hechaluts, the Zionist pioneering movement, which was Pino's HQ." (40) Meinekestrasse 10 Berlin, BE 10719 Germany www.expedia.com/Berlin-Hotels-Grand-City-Hotel-Berlin-Zentrum.h920048.Hotel-Information Commemorative plate for Jüdische Rundschau on the façade in Meinekestraße #10. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israelitisches_FamilienblattOnce the agreements began to be carried out in earnest, a remarkable spirit of co-operaion, even camaraderie, grew up between Zionists and Nazis. This was to contrast strangely with the Nazi attitude to those Jews — the great majority in fact — who were unwilling or unable to comply with the Zionist and Nazi demand that they leave their homes in Europe. "In March 1939, the first transport of 280 German Jews organised by Pino, whose destination was ostensibly Zionist training farms in Yugoslavia, left Berlin. The Nazi authorities provided a special train and Nazi officials accompanied the train as far as Vienna, where the group joined another and larger transport of Austrian Jews which was accompanied by Austrian Nazis. "The Austrian part of the transport had been organised by Bar-Gilad, working in Vienna... "The trains with the hundreds of singing pioneers, with the bored Nazi guards leaning out of the windows, must have been an incongruous sight as it rattled through the lazy countryside of southern Austria. The sailing went according to plan; several hundred young Jews landed secretly on the shores of Palestine." (41) Zagreb, Yugoslavia, Teenagers from the training camp (Hachshara) in Vienna on their way to Eretz Israel, 1941. Belongs to collection: Vienna, Austria, 1931-1941, Photographs of agricultural training camps for Zionist youth movements. collections.yadvashem.org/photosarchive/en-us/71826_1688.htmlPlaying astutely on their feelings of insecurity, the Zionist movement persuaded German Jews to donate considerable sums for the rapid expansion of the training camps and transportation facilities so that the trickle of emigrants could become a flood. The Zionist-Nazi agreements on emigration continued in this form for two years following the outbreak of the Second World War. However, their smooth operation was disturbed in 1941 after Germany attacked the Soviet Union. The Nazis argued that the agreements were no longer able to operate owing to their need to give priority to their military situation on the Eastern Front when allocating transport, and to the general disruption by the war of communications in central and Eastern Europe. Finding it no longer feasible to rid Europe of Jews through emigration, Hitler opted for another way. "In January 1938, he had already given orders that Jewish emigration was to be directed primarily to Palestine, and when that gate was also closed he embraced the simple way out that was now offered to him, the 'Final Solution' of the extermination camp." (42) This new situation confronted Zionism with a critical choice between two courses of action. The first was to declare war on Nazism, renounce the 1938 agreements totally and raise the banner of Jewish revolt against Nazism throughout Europe. This, of course, would have meant abandoning once and for all any possibility of securing even the most limited "legal" emigration of Zionist manpower from Europe through co-operation with the Nazis in the future, should the logistical situation later change to allow for that. The choice of resistance would also mean that the Zionists would have to throw themselves into the struggle against oppression and anti-Semitism in Europe, side by side with Gentiles and assimilationists or progressive Jews. For Zionists, this would have implied not only a serious compromising of their most profoundly-held beliefs but also, perhaps even more serious, an admission of defeat for their whole philosophy. The second course of action open to the Zionists was to accept that the situation had changed, at least temporarily, in a direction unfavourable to them, and to attempt to salvage as much as they could by reaching new, but more limited, arrangements. This would, of course, mean acquiescing in the deaths of large numbers of their co-religionists. It would, however, have the advantage of keeping the door of communication with Nazi Germany open, to be used if the situation changed back to a more favourable one in future. Furthermore, it would involve no fundamental watering-down or defeat of the Zionist ideology. The Zionist movement was led inevitably to this agonising choice by its signature of those early agreements with Nazi Germany. Some apologists have argued that in this the Zionists were not acting from really sinister motives, and were unaware of the cruel end to which it could lead. Apart from the moral danger of blindly maintaining that the end justifies any means, it is highly doubtful that the Zionist leaders, with their remarkable skill in long-term planning, were unaware of either the true nature or the potential course of Nazi policy, which were obvious to most ordinary Europeans by at least the mid-1930s. In this context, the prosecutor in the Eichmann trial, Gideon Hausner, made some very valid comments. Referring to Hitler, he stated: "When he gave free rein to hatred for the Jews, he had also taken the steep path that plunged down to the 'Day of Boycott' against the Jews on 1 April 1933, to the Kristallnacht of 9-10 November 1938; to the 'physical extermination' decision of 31 July 1941. This was the logic of events, each of which evolved from the one before, and lead inexorably to its successor. The way of anti-Semitism led to Auschwitz." (43) Aerial reconnaissance photograph of the auschwitz concentration camp showing the auschwitz I www.nizkor.org/auschwitz-av.htmlAerial reconnaissance photograph of the auschwitz concentration camp showing auschwitz II (Birkenau) www.nizkor.org/auschwitz-av.htmlThe logic of the steep path did not apply only to the Nazis. By accepting the fatal principale of common interests and consequent co-operation with Nazism, however limited its scale in the 1930s, the Zionists set themselves on their own parallel steep path downwards. The two phenomena of anti-Semitism and the Zionists' alliance of convenience with it, in the hope of using it as the "propelling force" they needed, cannot be separated completely. They reacted mutually on each other, as inevitably happens with any two political forces whose relationship is one of close contact, whether in confrontation or co-operation. In any case, whatever excuses could be advanced for Zionism's agreements with Nazism in the 1930s, these cannot be valid for any continued co-operation after the Nazis had launched the full-scale implementation of genocide in mid-1941. During the period 1941-44, a number of individual Zionists in Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe, such as Mordechai Anielewicz, broke with Zionism's traditional policy and participated in revolts against Nazism. But these revolts were all organised locally, by Jews in Warsaw, Vilno, Bialystok and other areas, often in co-ordination with each other within occupied territories but without the co-operation of the Zionist movement on the international level. * No. 10 Maineckestrasse was the address of the Zionist Organisation's Berlin headquarters. Despite the appearance of large numbers of books on Nazi Germany's barbaric treatment of the European Jews, there is widespread public ignorance on one important aspect of this question: the relationship between the Zionist movement and Nazi Germany. The information on this subject is available, but has not yet been gathered together in a single comprehensive study. (Note: You may also refer to 51 Documents of Zionist Collaboration With The Nazis edited by Lenni Brenner and A Threat From Within: A Century of Jewish Opposition to Zionism by Yakov M. Rabkin.) This study is intended, at least partially, to remedy this deficiency.
Owing to the delicate nature of this subject, and the Zionist tendency to brand any non-Zionist or anti-Zionist viewpoint as "anti-Semitic", all the material on Zionist-Nazi relations in this study is taken from exclusively Jewish sources. The writers quoted cover a wide spectrum of views, from extreme Zionist to anti-Zionist, with various shades in between. The reader will thus be able to form an accurate and objective opinion on the basis of evidence presented by leading Jewish historians.

------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- - *Non-violence activist addresses Israeli military court* <http://www.maannews .net/eng/ ViewDetails. aspx?ID=394300> Bassem Tamimi, Ma'an News Agency 6/6/2011 /Non-violence activist Bassem Tamimi's address to Israel's Ofer military court during his trial for organizing protests in the West Bank village of Nabi Saleh. A military judge refused to allow Tamimi to read his full statement in court./ Your Honor, I hold this speech out of belief in peace, justice, freedom, the right to live in dignity, and out of respect for free thought in the absence of Just Laws. Every time I am called to appear before your courts, I become nervous and afraid. Eighteen years ago, my sister was killed by in a courtroom such as this, by a staff member. In my lifetime, I have been nine times imprisoned for an overall of almost 3 years, though I was never charged or convicted. During my imprisonment, I was paralyzed as a result of torture by your investigators. My wife was detained, my children were wounded, my land was stolen by settlers, and now my house is slated for demolition. I was born at the same time as the Occupation and have been living under its inherent inhumanity, inequality, racism and lack of freedom ever since. Yet, despite all this, my belief in human values and the need for peace in this land have never been shaken. Suffering and oppression did not fill my heart with hatred for anyone, nor did they kindle feelings of revenge. To the contrary, they reinforced my belief in peace and national standing as an adequate response to the inhumanity of Occupation. International law guarantees the right of occupied people to resist Occupation. In practicing my right, I have called for and organized peaceful popular demonstrations against the Occupation, settler attacks and the theft of more than half of the land of my village, Nabi Saleh, where the graves of my ancestors have lain since time immemorial. -- See also:Protest organizer on trial in Israeli military court <http://www.maannews .net/eng/ ViewDetails. aspx?ID=394285>and+972: 'Our demonstrations are in protest of injustice' West Bank protest leader tells an Israeli military court <http://972mag. com/our-demonstr ations-are- in-protest- of-injustice- west-bank- protest-leader- tells-an- israeli-military -court/>more.. <http://www.maannews .net/eng/ ViewDetails. aspx?ID=394300>e-mail <mailto:?subject= Non-violence% 20activist% 20addresses% 20Israeli% 20military% 20court%20& body=Non- violence% 20activist% 20addresses% 20Israeli% 20military% 20court%20- -%20http://www.maannews .net/eng/ ViewDetails. aspx?ID=394300% 20--%20link% 20courtesy% 20www.vtjp. org>
*Commemorating Naksa: Report on Weekend Anti-Occupation Protests* <http://www.alternat ivenews.org/ english/index. php/topics/ news/3650- commemorating- naksa-report- on-weekend- anti-occupation- protests-> Dolev Rahat, Alternative Information Center 6/6/2011 /When demonstrators understood that the fire was aimed directly at their bodies, they began to run. The shooting, however, did not stop.../ This past weekend's demonstrations (3-4 June) against the Israeli occupation, settlements and apartheid walls were conducted in the West Bank villages of Bil'in, Na'alin, Nabi Saleh, al Masara and Beit Ummar. In Budrus a demonstration was held against an Israeli quarry located on land of Palestinian villages. The weekly demonstration against the Separation Wall in the Ramallah-area village of Bil'in commemorated the 44th anniversary of the Naksa, the beginning of Israel's 1967 occupation of the West Bank, East Jerusalem, Gaza Strip and the Syrian Golan. Demonstrators carried two huge maps of Palestine that noted the Palestinian land lost in 1948 and 1967. When demonstrators reached the Separation Wall, Israeli soldiers shot tear gas and skunk water at them. Journalist Haled Manasara was injured in his leg from a tear gas canister. However, demonstrators did manage to reach the Wall (which in this area is a barbed wire fence) and removed tens of metres of it. Tear gas canisters resulted in the setting of several small fires and burning of numerous olive trees. Soldiers continued shooting toward the olive groves with the goal of setting trees on fire, even after the demonstration ended and protesters returned to the village. In the Ramallah-area village of Na'alin the weekly demonstration commemorated the second anniversary of the death of Aqel Srur, who was shot in the chest with live fire in the village in June 2009. This week the military also chose to oppress the Na'alin demonstration using live ammunition. -- See also:AlJazeera video: Violence marks 'Naksa' in Golan Heights <http://www.youtube. com/watch? v=X-lJkOzhZnk& feature=player_ embedded>more.. <http://www.alternat ivenews.org/ english/index. php/topics/ news/3650- commemorating- naksa-report- on-weekend- anti-occupation- protests->e-mail <mailto:?subject= Commemorating% 20Naksa:% 20Report% 20on%20Weekend% 20Anti-Occupatio n%20Protests% 20&body=Commemor ating%20Naksa: %20Report% 20on%20Weekend% 20Anti-Occupatio n%20Protests% 20--%20http://www.alternat ivenews.org/ english/index. php/topics/ news/3650- commemorating- naksa-report- on-weekend- anti-occupation- protests- %20--%20link% 20courtesy% 20www.vtjp. org>
*Two Pseudo-States is not a Solution for Israeli Democracy* <http://972mag. com/two-pseudo- states-is- not-a-solution- for-israeli- democracy/> Hagai El-ad, +972 Magazine 6/6/2011 /The two-state solution? Instead of an end to the occupation, September might bring us not just more of the same, but worse: an occupied pseudo-State of Palestine, alongside a deteriorating pseudo-democracy in Israel./ The expected UN General Assembly decision on the establishment of an independent Palestinian state was perhaps supposed to usher in a new spirit of optimism among advocates of human rights and democracy. Self-determination for Palestinians and an end to the Occupation ought not only to have heralded a dramatic improvement in the human rights situation in the territories; it could also shift resources previously channeled into the Occupation towards Israel itself, boost efforts to reduce socioeconomic disparities, rally investments for equal opportunity in education and employment, strengthen the legal system, advance full civic equality, and promote progress toward numerous other life-affirming goals and objectives. For all those crucial goals and objectives that have been mired in the swamp of the Occupation, this was to be their hour. A new spirit of optimism? Not exactly. The scenario that now seems to be emerging turns out not to be one that will end the occupation of the Palestinians or revive Israeli democracy. On the contrary. In the territories -- we can expect to see no end to occupation, but a pseudo-state under the further prolonged state of occupation. In Israel -- it looks like there not to be a revival of democracy or improvements in civic equality, but further and even accelerated deterioration towards a pseudo-democracy. The result will be a pseudo-state there and a pseudo-democracy here. In the territories, even if 150 or more nations vote in September at the UN for the declaration of a Palestinian State, this by itself will end neither the occupation nor the human rights violations to which the occupation, by its nature, necessarily gives rise....more. . <http://972mag. com/two-pseudo- states-is- not-a-solution- for-israeli- democracy/>e-mail <mailto:?subject= Two%20Pseudo- States%20is% 20not%20a% 20Solution% 20for%20Israeli% 20Democracy% 20&body=Two% 20Pseudo- States%20is% 20not%20a% 20Solution% 20for%20Israeli% 20Democracy% 20--%20http://972mag. com/two-pseudo- states-is- not-a-solution- for-israeli- democracy/ %20--%20link% 20courtesy% 20www.vtjp. org>

*Long Before the "Arab Spring", Palestinians Protest Non-Violently* <http://ingaza. wordpress. com/2011/ 06/06/long- before-the- arab-spring- palestinians- protest-non- violently/> In Gaza: 6 Jun 2011 - BEIT HANOUN, Gaza Strip, Jun 6, 2011 (IPS) -- It is a scene replayed weekly in Palestine. In Gaza, groups of chanting demonstrators walk towards the border with Israel, singing, chanting, dancing. Ayat el Masari, 20, walks with the masses. An English major at Gaza's Aqsa University, the young woman is among many women who regularly attend Palestinian protests. "I joined this demonstration and the one on Nakba Day because I am Palestinian and we have been refugees for over 60 years," she says referring to the 1948 forced expulsion of over 750,000 Palestinians from their land to make way for the Jewish state of Israel. Smiling but firm, the young woman voices what Palestinians have been saying for decades. "We suffer from the occupation, it is time for it to end." But were the deaths the inevitable result of 'natural events' beyond the human intervention? Coincidentally the same week Afghan President Karzai condemned the killing of a family of 14 by a NATO fighter bomber, running the total to several hundred civilians killed so far this year and thousands over the decade. The relation between the civilian deaths in Joplin and Afghanistan raises fundamental questions about the priorities, character and direction of the US Empire and the future of the American republic. *Palestine's 'Amandla!' Moment: Music and Palestine* <http://palestinechr onicle.com/ view_article_ details.php? id=16902> Palestine Chronicle: 6 Jun 2011 - By Doc Jazz I don't have a dream. It would perhaps be great if I did, but I don't. Dreams, to me, are a distortion of reality, a way for your emotions to deal with realities that your conscious mind finds too hard to digest. They are, by default, irrational responses that serve to maintain an emotional balance, but have no problem-solving capabilities. As a Palestinian, I don't like today's realities, and I find them utterly indigestible. I therefore firmly believe that they should be changed. I view things from my own background, like everyone else, and the reality of Palestine is a grim one, an ugly one, a desperate one, and a violent one. The reason for this is a racist ideology that defines certain people as inherently 'superior', and others as naturally 'inferior'. Its proponents take enormous pride in this deluded view of the world, commonly known as...more <http://palestinechr onicle.com/ view_article_ details.php? id=16902>

Which isn't surprising. Even though we have all been familiar with the long tradition of US politicians forever dancing to Israel's tunes and eating out of its lobby's hand, Bibi's endless adulation in the Congress was nonetheless hard to digest. And it's not just us, distant observers in the Middle East and sympathizers of the oppressed lot of Palestinians who are outraged by the US lawmakers repeatedly throwing themselves at Israeli premier's feet. Many a US commentator who still retains some semblance of conscience has been troubled by the craven sycophancy of their politicians. The lawmakers cheered even when the 'guest' standing there in the highest representative body in the land continually derided their president and rubbed his nose in. jewishvoiceforpeace.org Subscribe to our blog Muzzlewatch — www.muzzlewatch.com/....... Before CAT's shareholder meeting, ask the company:
How many more Palestinians need to become homeless before you react?
On Wednesday, June 9, at 1.30 pm Central Time, the Caterpillar Board of Directors will hold the company's annual shareholder meeting, and they've asked to receive questions in advance of that meeting. Please ask them why are they selling bulldozers to Israel, despite the fact that it is common knowledge that these are used to demolish Palestinian homes.
Subject: How many more Palestinians need to become homeless before you react?
Your Letter:
Amnesty International asked you to take measures to guarantee that your bulldozers are not used by Israel to commit human rights violations.(1) Human Rights Watch recommended that you suspend the sales of D9 bulldozers, parts, or maintenance services to the Israeli army.(2) The office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights sent you a letter warning you that the sale of your bulldozers to Israel “might involve complicity or acceptance on the part of your company to actual and potential violations of human rights, including the right to food.”(3)
All of this happened as early as 2004, and yet you refuse to change course. Why?
Palestinian homes keep on being demolished at a rapid pace. How many more homes need to be demolished before you take responsibility for the actions of your bulldozers?

Anthony Weiner Falsely Claims There’s ‘No Israeli Occupation’ In The West Bank And No IDF Troops ThereBy Zaid Jilani on Mar 4, 2011 at 6:00 pm Think ProgressLast night, The Nation Institute hosted a debate between former congressman Brian Baird and Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) and moderated by The New York Times’s Roger Cohen about the UN-commissioned Goldstone Report, which documented alleged war crimes committed by both the Israeli military and Hamas forces during the 22-day long “Operation Cast Lead” conflict in Gaza in 2008. At one point during the debate, Weiner began to say that the West Bank was more relatively prosperous than Gaza in part because there is no Israeli occupation there (although there is an enormous blockade). Cohen pointedly asked Weiner if he was really serious in claiming that Israel is not currently occupying the West Bank, which is the position of the international community and the United States. Weiner repeatedly insisted that there was no occupation there, even going as far as telling Cohen he agreed that there was “no IDF [Israeli Defense Forces] presence there”: WEINER: You can see a difference in the development in the West Bank with 11 percent year over year growth, with no Israeli occupation there either, with increasing access to checkpoints — COHEN: What about area C, D, WEINER: Hold on, maybe this would be helpful COHEN: No occupation in the West Bank, did I hear you right? WEINER: Yes. COHEN: Have you been to the West Bank lately? WEINER: Yes. COHEN: You didn’t see the IDF there? WEINER: In Ramallah? No. In Nablus? No. Now can I tell ya there might be some people in this room who think Jerusalem is occupied. COHEN: Well hold on a second there, let’s stick to the West Bank. You’re saying there is no IDF presence there? WEINER: Yes. Watch it: www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0OGBbrHA3MIt is simply false to say that the West Bank is not occupied and that there is no Israeli troop presence in the area. Both Nablus and Ramallah are the frequent subjects of Israeli military raids, and access to and from the cities is subject to Israeli control. Americans for Peace Now (APN) is a leading Middle East NGO that advocates for a peaceful two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. On its website, it has an interactive map of the Palestinian territories. The map lays out the presence of thousands of Israeli settlers in the West Bank, each of which is connected to eachother by Israeli-only roads guarded by numerous Israeli military battalions and many more checkpoints. In the following map, each blue house represents an Israeli settlement:It would be surprising to the Palestinian population in the West Bank, which has been under a state of occupation for 44 years, to hear that it lives free of Israeli military presence. This certainly is what the people who live in the territory want. Recent polling has found that 74 percent of the Palestinian population endorses a two-state solution where both the Israelis and Palestinians can live free in two independent states safe from occupation and terrorism. Yet such a solution will never happen as long as American politicians like Weiner advocate for a foreign policy that endorses every move Israel takes and fails to condemn its abuses against the Palestinian population. Weiner Standing His Ground Amidst Calls to ResignBy JON KARL and KEVIN DOLAK June 8, 2011 ABC.com (American, not Australian)John Minchillo/AP Photo — U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y., leaves a news conference in New York, June 6, 2011, where he confessed that he tweeted a bulging-underpants photo of himself to a young woman and admitted to "inappropriate" exchanges with six women before and after getting married.Pressure is mounting on Rep. Anthony Weiner to step down after his confession that he had been sending lewd photos of himself to women via Facebook and Twitter -- and that he has lied about it. The New York Democrat is finding few who are willing to publicly come to his defense, even in his own party. "Lying is unforgivable. Lying publicly about something like this is unforgivable and he should resign," former DNC Shairman Tim Kaine, D-Va., told CBS on Tuesday. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi's call for an ethics committee investigation is not satisfying some Republicans who are calling for an immediate resignation. Weiner, however, maintains that he will hang onto his job as U.S. Representative for New York's 9th congressional district. "I am not resigning," Weiner said told reporters in Queens, N.Y., Tuesday evening. Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus became the first official to call on Weiner to resign after Weiner's mea culpa press conference on Monday. "Congressman Weiner's actions and deception are unacceptable and he should resign. We do not need an investigation to know he lied and acted inappropriately, we need a resignation," Priebus said in a written statement. "Either Leader Pelosi and DNC Chair Wasserman Schultz believe members of Congress are held to a different set of standards or they believe these actions demand his resignation," he added. And on top of Pelosi's quick call for an ethics committee investigation, few of Weiner's fellow Democrats are rushing to his defense. "I know Congressman Weiner. And I wish there was some way I could defend him -- but I can't," Senator Harry Reid, D – Nev., said. Reid added that if Weiner called him for advice, he'd tell him to "call someone else." Although Weiner's actions would be considered by many to be lewd and inappropriate, the major question for the ethics committee is whether he broke the rules of the House of Representatives. Blake Chisam, former staff director of the ethics committee, says that if Weiner used his government computer to send the messages, he could be in trouble, even though some incidental personal use is permitted. "You know the rules in the house can often be a labyrinth," Chisam told ABC News, adding that the questions of whether sending pornography or lewd photographs will be difficult to argue as "incidental." Adding to the carnival-like atmosphere surrounding the story, Donald Trump posted a scathing Youtube video with his reaction to the scandal. "The fact is, Anthony Weiner is a bad guy. He's a psycho. And when this came out, I was not surprised at all," Trump said in the clip. video — via link abcnews.go.com/Politics/rep-weiner-standing-ground-amidst-calls-resign/story?id=13789038....... Ongoing trial — The murder of American Rachel Corrie by Israeli CATERPILLAR D9 bulldozer driver
Unit Commander Says Ordered to Continue Bulldozer Work Despite Danger to Civilians[/size] FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 4, 2011Corrie Trial Spotlights Israeli Accountability For Unlawful Killing of Nonviolent Protester
(Haifa, Israel – April 4, 2011) – The commander of the unit that killed Rachel Corrie told a Haifa court on Sunday that he was ordered to continue bulldozer work even though it presented danger to civilians, including foreign activists, who were present in the area and could not be dispersed. Known to the court as Captain S.R., the Bedouin officer said that he actually requested to halt bulldozer operations on the day Rachel was killed, because he thought civilians might be hurt, but was ordered to continue.“Today’s testimonies provide further strong evidence regarding the Israeli military failure to take necessary and reasonable measures to protect Rachel’s life and prevent her avoidable tragic death. They also underscore the systemic inadequacy of the military investigation system which in this case, was nothing but a whitewash,” said Attorney Hussein Abu Hussein, who represents the Corrie family. “More than eight years after Rachel’s death, we are uncovering new pieces of the truth despite a wall of secrecy and lack of transparency.”Rachel, an American student activist and human rights defender, was crushed to death by an Israeli military Caterpillar D9R bulldozer on March 16, 2003 while nonviolently protesting the demolition of Palestinian homes in Rafah, Gaza. On the day she was killed, Captain S.R. radioed to Israeli army command and said that something from the bulldozer fell on Rachel. However, in court, he admitted he did not see the exact moment of the incident and that this was only a fleeting hypothesis. He said he reached Rachel’s body less than one minute after the incident and it was immediately clear by marks in the ground that Rachel had been hit by the bulldozer. Captain S.R.’s testimony about the location of Rachel’s body after she was hit corroborated that of international eyewitnesses and the bulldozer driver, all of whom said that after the bulldozer backed up, Rachel’s body was located between the bulldozer and the mound of earth that it had pushed. This calls into question the testimony of the bulldozer commander, and the position of the State, that Rachel’s body was in a different location: on the far side of the mound of earth created by the bulldozer. Captain S.R. confirmed that evidence photos taken by the protesters that day accurately reflect the scene of the incident after Ms. Corrie was hit.Additional testimony included:* He testified the unit’s standard practice on the ground was to stop if someone was within five meters of the bulldozer. International eyewitnesses previously testified that Rachel was well beyond this distance when the bulldozer began its approach. * He confirmed he did not think the presence of protesters in the area was forbidden and stated he was not sure if it was a closed military zone, but in any event, he did not think he had the authority to declare it one. He added that it was forbidden for people to be that close to the bulldozer, and that demonstration dispersal measures were carried out on one occasion several hours earlier that day, but were abandoned as they failed to impact the protesters. * He confirmed that a female soldier viewed the site through a remote camera that day, and instructions could be given to his unit based on what was seen. * The Captain’s review of an interview he gave to Israeli Channel 2 TV’s “Uvda” program confirmed the existence of IDF video footage that has not been submitted into evidence by the State or provided to the Corrie family’s attorneys through discovery. The interview, aired on April 5, 2003, included a segment of March 16th, 2003 Israeli military video of the operations. His testimony confirms additional IDF video exists, even though the lead Military Police investigator responsible for obtaining evidence in the case stated firmly that there is no additional video. * He confirmed that a written document does exist that outlines regulations, specific to civilians, for a “removal procedure” – a set of instructions outlining how to remove civilians in situations such as these. Attorneys for the State continued to claim the regulation does not exist – in direct contradiction to the sworn testimony of their own witness moments before. Example of removing civilians — Activists block Israeli bulldozer
www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kq47IogJbBo Uploaded by ISMPalestine on Apr 28, 2010 Protesters in Al Walaja attempt to stop an Israeli bulldozer from destroying Palestinian property to make way for the continued construction of the illegal seperation wall. Once complete, the wall would encircle the entire village of Al Walaja, preventing villagers from reahing their land, limiting their freedom to travel and stopping their family and friends from visiting them. The second witness to testify on Sunday was S.L., who in 2003 was head of the Mechanized Engineering Equipment Department. In an affidavit submitted to the court, referring to regulations, S.L. said, “in no way is the directive applicable to the operational conditions in which the bulldozer operated in this case.” However, in court on Sunday, he contradicted that assertion and admitted that regulations requiring that D9 bulldozers not operate within 20 meters (sic. should be 20 feet? above is stated 5 meters) of people did, in fact, apply. When asked if there were “lessons learned” in response to this incident, he said he was unaware of any changes made in training and affirmed that to date, cameras to improve visibility have not been added to the bulldozers. He said the Israeli army experimented with cameras but found they were not a good solution because they were too easily damaged and because neither the bulldozer operator nor his commander had ability to pay attention to the cameras under operational circumstances. However, he confirmed that unmanned “drone” bulldozers with cameras attached were used by the Israeli army during the Lebanon invasion of 2006.Sunday’s proceedings were attended by the American Embassy and representatives from the legal and human rights organizations; Avocats Sans Frontières, Al Haq, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, National Lawyers Guild, and Yesh Din. The next hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, April 6th from 9:00-16:00 before Judge Oded Gershon, 6th floor, Haifa, District Court, 12 Palyam St., Haifa, Israel. The Deputy Battalion Commander and Platoon Commander are scheduled to testify. An additional hearing is anticipated. Stopping Bulldozer Work Not an Option Despite Risk to ProtestersFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 11, 2011
Updated April 12Deputy Battalion Commander Says Avoiding Precedent Influenced Decision Not to Stop(Haifa, Israel – April 11, 2011) – Two Israeli military officers who commanded troops near Rafah, Gaza on the day Rachel Corrie was killed, took the stand behind a screen in a Haifa court Wednesday, April 6, as government witnesses in the ongoing civil lawsuit Corrie vs. the State of Israel. Their testimony further underscored the failure of the Israeli military to recognize the rights, and protect the lives and property of civilians in the Rafah, Gaza region in 2003; including that of the International Solidarity Movement (ISM) protesters. Deputy Battalion Commander Sh.R, a Major responsible for overseeing 450-500 soldiers in Gaza, said he was located about 1 ½ kilometers from the scene at the army’s Liaison Unit with Foreign Forces (Yaklaz), and that although the bulldozer work was under the direct ground supervision of Captain S.R., he was in a position to influence the work and was ultimately responsible for the decisions made that day. This was significant because in the preceding hearing, Captain S.R., a Bedouin officer who testified earlier in the week, told the court he requested to halt his work because of the presence of the protesters, and potential danger to them, but received orders to continue.Sh.R. defined the “Philidelphi Route” not just as the narrow, Israeli controlled, military road running parallel to the Gaza/Egypt border, but rather as the entire width of land between the Egypt border and the first row of Palestinian houses inside Gazan territory. He also insisted that Palestinians in these houses were those digging tunnels, snipers attacking the military, or smuggling weapons, and that clearing and destroying homes was done only after it was “beyond a reasonable doubt” that homes were empty. Please refer to Mohammed Omer's testimony about the demolition of his home and the injury to his mother, who managed to escape the house by jumping out the window as the bulldozer approached the house from the front door.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWuRQJeIRyQ His description, although emblematic of the Israeli military’s position regarding the area in 2003, completely ignores the fact, and credible documentation by U.N. humanitarian agencies and human rights groups, that the land was once filled with densely populated civilian homes, the first row of which receded rapidly as the Israeli military bulldozed row upon row of houses, widening the border’s buffer zone and claiming the newly razed Palestinian territory for its own. Comparative satellite photos from a 2004 Human Rights Watch publication titled Razing Rafah: Mass Home Demolitions in the Gaza Strip document this “wholesale destruction” of Palestinian homes along Gaza’s southern border. www.hrw.org/en/reports/2004/10/17/razing-rafah-0 download pdf: www.hrw.org/sites/default/files/reports/rafah1004full.pdf In e-mails to her mother,* Rachel described her experience living with the Nasrallah family, whose home she was protesting in front of when she was killed: “the two front rooms of their house are unusable because gunshots have been fired through the walls, so the whole family—three kids and two parents—sleep in the parents’ bedroom. I sleep on the floor next to the youngest daughter, Iman, and we all share blankets. … Friday is the holiday, and when I woke up they were watching Gummy Bears dubbed into Arabic. So, I ate breakfast with them and sat there for a while and just enjoyed being in this big puddle of blankets with this family watching what for me seemed like Saturday morning cartoons.” Iman Nasrallah — One of the family members who lived in the home that Rachel was protecting with her life.Although the house was not demolished that day, the family was forced to flee seven months later when the Israeli military cut sewer and power lines and badly damaged a structural wall. The home was fully demolished in spring 2004. It was home to five young children, four of whom were present behind their garden wall as the bulldozer unit approached and Rachel was killed. Additional testimony of the Deputy Battalion Commander Included:* He stated that there was a weekly work plan as well as a written “mission file” for the unit that identified the unit’s mission directive, participating forces, and instructions given to the force; including any safety instructions. However, this material was never released to Corrie family attorneys as part of discovery of the Military Police investigative file – a startling omission that calls into question the thoroughness of the government’s investigation into Rachel’s killing. * Sh.R. identified that there was a female “scout” who recorded both video and audio files from the event, but claimed that not all the audio was recorded. Sh.R. also confirmed that cell phones, were also used, but unrecorded, to communicate orders back and forth between Captain S.R. and the Deputy Battalion Commander. * Sh.R. stated he knew unarmed protestors were in the area, but in his opinion, stopping the work was not an option. He said the protesters were not a threat to the force, but added that if every foreigner came to raise banners, terrorists would also come and he would lose his ability to control the region. He admitted that avoiding a precedent was a consideration in the decision to continue working. He stated that in his opinion, the protesters should have been barred from entering Gaza. * Although, he described in testimony that regulations state you don’t shoot unless there is intent and means to hurt you, a written summary of events recorded in the daily operations log on March 16, 2003, stated, “those foreigners should be handled and their entrance into the Gaza Strip should be forbidden. Additionally, the work must continue in the area in question. The firing orders state that every adult person should be shot to kill.” Within seven weeks of Rachel’s killing, award winning journalist James Miller and activist Tom Hurndall, both British citizens, were shot and killed along the same two mile stretch of the Rafah, Gaza border. * When asked if he recalled being involved in an incident of “interference” with the military police investigation, Sh.R responded, “yes” and described how his Division Commander phoned him and ordered the investigation stopped due to a dispute over authorization. Sh.R. testified that he approached the lead investigator, interrupting the questioning of the bulldozer driver already in progress, and that personal words were exchanged. He acknowledged that he instructed the investigator to stop, based on orders of the High Command. When questioned about the ethics of interfering in a military police investigation, Sh.R. stated emphatically that he was given an order and he carried it out. Following Sh.R’s testimony, Platoon Commander, A.D. took the stand. Unlike Sh.R, who was away from the scene, witness A.D. was present and second in command within the Acensored . He struggled to remember specific details about the events and said that he did not see the events before, during, or after they occurred. He also did not recall any lessons learned from the incident. Highlights of Platoon Commander A.D.’s testimony included:* He confirmed the unit would have been given a written “task file” before setting out on the work, although he could not remember anything about the specific file that day.* The Acensored had a periscope from which they could see a longer distance from the vehicle. * Commander R.S. spoke frequently on the cell phone and, in order to use it, he had to remove his helmet. This contradicts earlier military testimonies that claimed helmets worn would never be removed and, thus, soldiers would not have heard the protesters shouting through the megaphone nearby.* He could not recall the specific safety instructions for the D9 bulldozer, but said the unit would continue working as carefully as possible. He believed work was allowed if protesters were within 15 meters of the vehicle, but not if they were within 5 meters. * He knew that the protesters were civilians and “Americans.” * He said there was a first aid kit within the Acensored , and he believed it was likely that the radio communications person in the vehicle was also a trained medic. However, he confirmed that the medical kit was not thrown to the protesters after Rachel was hit. Testimony made clear that no serious attempt was made by the military to provide medical assistance to Rachel at the scene prior to Palestinian medics evacuating her.Wednesday’s proceedings were attended by a representative from the American Embassy and representatives from the legal and human rights organizations; Adalah, Advocates Sans Frontièrs, Al Haq, Al Mezan, Amnesty International, Arab Association for Human Rights, the Ecumenical Accompaniment Team, and Yesh Din. The next, and likely last, hearing is scheduled for Sunday, May 22nd from 9:00-16:00. Scheduled to testify are Colonel Pinhas (Pinky) Zuaretz and former IDF spokesperson, Brigadier General Ruth Yaron. Hearings are held before Judge Oded Gershon, 6th floor, Haifa District Court, 12 Palyam St., Haifa, Israel. Trapped in Gaza: Rafah Crossing Closed to Palestinians Soon After Egyptian Pledge to Reopen It (DN!)
AMY GOODMAN: In the Gaza Strip, the Hamas government has asked Egypt to drop restrictions on the Rafah border crossing, just days after the checkpoint opened last week. In a major policy shift, Egypt’s transition government had unsealed the Rafah border after years of closure under ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. But less than a week later, Egypt imposed a cap of 400 people per day, turning back busloads of people who had been cleared for passage. On Saturday, the border was sealed completely, causing angry Palestinians to storm the gates in protest.
Well, Democracy Now!’s Sharif Abdel Kouddous and Nicole Salazar are in the Gaza Strip and were one of the few teams of foreign journalists to witness the scene at the Rafah border. They filed this report.
SHARIF ABDEL KOUDDOUS: Outrage in Gaza. Palestinians trying to leave through the Rafah border crossing with Egypt find that they are still trapped inside the Strip. Last week, the Egyptian government announced it had permanently reopened the Rafah crossing, Gaza’s only border not controlled by Israel. The announcement was welcomed by Gazans who have been living under a severe blockade imposed by Israel for the last five years. The Mubarak government cooperated with the siege by tightly restricting movement through Rafah. Three months after Mubarak’s ouster, the post-revolutionary government in Egypt said it had permanently reopened the crossing. But the reality on the ground tells a very different story.
BADREYA: [translated] The Egyptians told us the crossing is open and that they’re letting in elderly people and women. They haven’t let in anything. I’m going to have surgery that I myself am paying for. For three days I’ve been coming to this crossing for no reason.
SHARIF ABDEL KOUDDOUS: For the past few days, hundreds of Palestinians have traveled from across Gaza to the Rafah border crossing hoping to enter Egypt, only to be turned away.
PALESTINIAN MAN ON BUS: [translated] As you can see, we come and we try. This one is closed, this one is open. The one gate we have is the Egyptian gate. We appeal to the Supreme Council of Armed Forces under the leadership of Field Marshal Tantawi to open the crossing and ease the Palestinian situation.
SHARIF ABDEL KOUDDOUS: Would-be travelers had many reasons for wanting to leave Gaza: the sick seeking medical treatment, students studying overseas, family members trying to reunite with loved ones. To many of them, the border opening was an empty promise, and their anger is palpable.
ASMAA ABU MEZIED: Every day we came, and they just—they say the borders are closed. And we are asking why they are closed. You know, we heard on the news that the Egyptian borders are open. So where is the question? What’s the problem? I want someone to answer me. What’s the problem?
SHARIF ABDEL KOUDDOUS: Gazans are left to wonder why the Egyptian government pledged to ease restrictions on travel and then not follow through.
MOHAMMED OMER: The Rafah crossing has been the only place for many Palestinians getting in and out of the Gaza Strip
SHARIF ABDEL KOUDDOUS: Mohammed Omer is an award-winning Palestinian journalist based in Rafah.
MOHAMMED OMER: I think Egypt is under international pressure from the United States and Israel to shut the border once again and to make restrictions on the Palestinians.
SHARIF ABDEL KOUDDOUS: There are more than 1.5 million Palestinians living in Gaza, a 25-mile-long strip of land and one of the most densely populated areas on earth. Israel tightened its blockade on the territory in 2007 after Hamas was elected to power and subsequently seized control of the territory. Ghazi Hamad is the deputy minister of foreign affairs for Hamas.
GHAZI HAMAD: You know, the only passage for Gaza is Rafah crossings, and we still have restrictions and limits on these crossings. But the other borders in the east and west and the north, it is controlled by the Israeli occupation. So it’s not easy for the Palestinians to move freely, because there is some political interests, either from United States, from Israel, from other countries, trying to put more hard conditions in Gaza and to continue the policy of blockade and siege and collective sanction against people. So, they feel that they are still living in a big prison. And despite that there’s some movement in and out, but we feel that we have the taste of a prison still in Gaza.
SHARIF ABDEL KOUDDOUS: The Israeli-imposed blockade and tight restrictions on freedom of travel in and out of Gaza mean that many Palestinians have never left the territory.
MOHAMMED OMER: There is a psychological impact that you feel—everybody feels trapped, in a way, inside the Gaza prison, which is true. In a way, you have here—we are on the beach of Rafah. You have the Israeli navy. You can see it, the Israeli navy, warships over there. And in the north, you see that the Israeli border is sealed. There is no one who can get out. The east, there is Israeli border. And the south, there is the Egyptian border. So everybody feels trapped inside the Gaza Strip, particularly those young men between the age of 18 to 40 who are not allowed to get outside without security coordination. Egypt called it visa, but I don’t call it a visa. In fact, it’s called security coordination, and it takes a long time for you, as a young man, to get outside of the Gaza Strip.
NADER ELKHUZUNDAR: I tried many times to leave. Like, I got admission from different universities, like in Canada and the U.S. I just can’t leave, because I was denied entry, like on both sides, the Egyptian and the Israeli.
SHARIF ABDEL KOUDDOUS: Nader Elkhuzundar is a 23-year-old university graduate. Like many Palestinian men his age, he has been unable to leave Gaza his entire life.
NADER ELKHUZUNDAR: They just deny entry, and they don’t give any clear reason. Like they’re just, "Sorry, but we can’t let you in. Go back to your home." I’ve tried for the past six years. I’m still trying, like I’m waiting admission from a university in the U.K. And I hope that I will be granted entry, so I can at least, like for once maybe, see the other world, see the other side of the border, and see the outer world.
MOHAMMED OMER: In many ways, you see some of the youth really having hard times. And what is the option for them? They feel isolated. Some of them, they doubt if there is a world even outside the Rafah crossing. When you talk to them, they say, "Is there really world outside the Rafah crossing? Maybe it’s all fake, what we see on television." But, you know, when you tell them that there is indeed world, and there are people who are supporting Palestine, and there are people who are supporting peace and justice in the region, they doubt it, because they don’t see it.
SHARIF ABDEL KOUDDOUS: The Egyptian government’s decision to reopen the border crossing on a permanent basis was hailed by many as the first concrete step in reversing years of Mubarak-era policies towards the Palestinians and Egypt’s complicity in the siege. Nagham Mohanna is a journalist and filmmaker.
NAGHAM MOHANNA: We were with the Egyptians in their revolution. Everybody—you can see that the TV channels only on Al Jazeera or Al Arabiya following what is happening in Egypt. For weeks we didn’t turn the channels. We were so happy when we heard that they succeeded in their revolution, because we said that we will have some effects on our society, on our place in Gaza.
SHARIF ABDEL KOUDDOUS: Salama Baraka is the director of the borders and crossings police in Gaza. He said that just a few days after Egyptian authorities reopened the border, they began severely restricting travel for Palestinians.
SALAMA BARAKA: [translated] For instance, they said that the technical staff at the Egyptian crossing was not prepared to receive this number of travelers, who were no more than 400. This is obviously an unreasonable answer. Rafah is an international crossing point that has facilitated the movement of thousands of travelers for years without any problems.
SHARIF ABDEL KOUDDOUS: Day after day, hundreds of Palestinians traveled to the border in the anticipation that they might be able to get out. But as the week progressed, the situation only got worse. Fewer Palestinians were being let through, the approval process was vague, and there was little communication. This culminated on Saturday when Egyptian authorities suddenly closed the border without warning. Ayoub Abu Shaar, the director of the Rafah crossing from the Palestinian side, made repeated phone calls to his Egyptian counterparts to find out what was happening, but he received no response.
AYOUB ABU SHAAR: [translated] We tried to reach the Egyptian side, but until now they have not responded to us at all. We haven’t been informed of any decision from the Egyptians about today or tomorrow, or about specific hours. Nothing. The closing is a complete surprise. The circumstances of the closing are a complete surprise. We weren’t expecting it at all. I don’t know why this step was taken by the Egyptian side, even more so because we were not informed of this decision.
SHARIF ABDEL KOUDDOUS: With the border closed and no word on why or when it would open, tensions quickly escalated. Dozens of men, women and children gathered at a large metal gate in the no man’s land between Egypt and Gaza. A dramatic scene unfolded as they banged on the gate, shouting to be let across. The crowd swelled, and people began to push heavily on the large metal doors until they finally broke open. Egyptian soldiers armed with assault rifles, electric batons and shields lined up to guard the border. A large wooden scaffolding had been constructed over the main gate. Egyptian authorities claimed they needed to renovate the crossing. Palestinian protesters shouted and chanted at the soldiers to let them through. Journalist Mohammed Omer describes the scene.
MOHAMMED OMER: He’s screaming that in this ambulance is his child who’s 12 years old. "Open the crossing. I can’t watch my son die in front of my eyes," he just said. He is trying to convince the Egyptian officers, but unfortunately, the Egyptian officer seems to be having a high command officials who said that the crossing should be closed immediately.
We are in no man’s land, basically. This is the Egyptian gate. This is the Palestinian gate. Palestinians are traveling that side. They are not allowed to travel today. They say, "We prefer to die, not to be humiliated by our brothers and sisters in Egypt." People are chanting. Everybody here wanted to leave to Egypt since Egypt announced the opening of the crossing. Going through those people, we find many of those people who are really desperate to leave for the first time, when they heard that Egypt has opened the border since the siege was established in 2006. Everybody is saying that, "Hey, there is an agreement on the ground. We have legitimacy from the youth of the Tahrir Square. We are all one hand. We coordinate with each other and break the siege on Gaza." Unfortunately, the officers are telling them that we have instructions to keep this crossing closed for the time being.
SHARIF ABDEL KOUDDOUS: The protesters were eventually escorted back by Palestinian security, and the border remained sealed. There was no word on when it would open again, and people were left not knowing when they could leave. The next day, hundreds of Palestinians again made their way to the Rafah crossing. The border gates were closed, but this time from the Palestinian side. Frustration and anger mounted.
ASMAA ABU MEZIED: I want someone to tell me why it is closed. Why the media—if the media is telling lies. Where’s the truth? I want to know, where is the truth? And if it is closed or open, I want to know. We are, as a citizen, Palestinian citizen, we need to speak with someone. But nobody is answering. Everyone is blaming the other side.
SHARIF ABDEL KOUDDOUS: The Egyptians had opened their side of the border, but Hamas announced it would keep the Palestinian side closed until the Egyptian government relaxed entry restrictions and allowed more Palestinians in per day. Torn between the two sides, the people of Gaza are left trapped, with no way out.
AHMED ABU ERGAILA: It’s our right to live in dignity. It’s not a problem of business or national interest or commerce. It’s an issue of dignity. And for that, we fight every day, against the Egyptians, against the siege, and against our people, here on the gate.
SHARIF ABDEL KOUDDOUS: For Democracy Now!, I’m Sharif Abdel Kouddous with Nicole Salazar in the Gaza Strip.
AMY GOODMAN: And this is Democracy Now!, democracynow.org, The War and Peace Report.

Caterpillar Board confronted in Little Rock over sale of bulldozers to IsraelPosted on June 8, 2011 WeDivest.orgCaterpillar Board confronted in Little Rock over sale of bulldozers to Israel 21% of shareholders ask for review of company’s human rights practicesFor immediate release Contact Sydney Levy (Jewish Voice for Peace) 415-994-4854(June 8, 2011) At its annual shareholder meeting, the Caterpillar Board of Directors was confronted once again with shareholders and activists upset about the use of Caterpillar bulldozers to demolish Palestinian homes.Since 2004, Jewish Voice for Peace, together with grassroots activists and an interfaith coalition of shareholders, has been attending the Caterpillar shareholder meetings in the Chicago area to hold the company accountable for their bulldozers being used to demolish Palestinian homes. This year, Caterpillar moved its shareholder meeting to Little Rock, AK, in an apparent attempt to make the meeting less accessible to company shareholders and to dampen criticism of the company’s human rights practices. Despite Caterpillar’s efforts, criticism of the company’s policies is on the rise. Over 2,500 people have contacted the Caterpillar Board of Directors within the last 24 hours, asking how many more Palestinians need to be made homeless before Caterpillar reacts. The United Nations is reporting a two-fold increase in the rate of Palestinian home demolitions by the Israeli authorities this year. These demolitions have razed entire villages again and again. The Bedouin village of Al-Arakib in the Negev has already been destroyed by Caterpillar bulldozers 21 times. Russ Greenleaf, representing Jewish Voice for Peace and a coalition of interfaith shareholders, presented a shareholder proposal asking Caterpillar to review its human policies. The proposal got 21% of the shareholder votes (provisional results).“Caterpillar’s sale of D9 bulldozers to Israel is not good for Israel, nor is it good for Caterpillar’s reputation,” said Mr. Greenleaf. “[Caterpillar] management buries its head in the sand when dealing with human rights,” he added. [Read Mr. Greenleaf's speech and the shareholder proposal here.] Caterpillar CEO Doug Oberhelman confirmed this assertion when he responded to the overwhelming evidence of Caterpillar bulldozers used to commit human right violations against Palestinians by saying, “How our customers use [the bulldozers] is their business. We can’t stop them.”Yet Caterpillar has the power to stop the sale of these bulldozers today, if they so choose. According to news reports, the deliveries of Caterpillar bulldozers to Israel have been suspended during the length of the Corrie trial in Israel. Cindy and Craig Corrie, are bringing a civil suit against the government of Israel in a court in Tel Aviv. Their daughter, Rachel, was a 23-year-old American peace activist killed under under a CAT bulldozer when she tried to protect the home of the Nasrallah family in Gaza from an Israeli army demolition. At the shareholder meeting, Caterpillar’s CEO would “neither confirm nor deny” that any shift in policy or practice has taken place. ABOUT JEWISH VOICE FOR PEACEJewish Voice for Peace is America’s largest Jewish grassroots peace group dedicated to reaching a just peace between Israelis and Palestinians based on the principles of equality and international human rights law.

Obama, Merkel: September statehood bid to be avoidedPublished yesterday (updated) 08/06/2011 20:43 Ma'an News AgencyBETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- US President Barack Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel agree that Palestinians should not seek recognition of a state at the UN in September, Obama said in a news conference Tuesday. US President Barack Obama and German Chancellor Angela MerkelAccording to Israeli daily Haaretz, Merkel stressed that "unilateral measures are not helping at all" to bring about a two-state solution, following talks between the two premiers on a wide range of issues. Palestinian leaders have vowed to go to the United Nations to establish their independent state in September should talks with Israel remain at an impasse. Obama is critical of the proposed move, insisting that direct talks should be prioritized. COMMENTS
1 ) Outsider / EU 08/06/2011 13:20 Are not the settlements a blatant "unilateral" act? Or is it only unilateral when Palestinians do it? How about the blockade? If Frau Merkel thinks direct negotiations are so important, I'd be curious to hear what she proposes to get Mr Netanyahu's camp to agree to meet in Paris next July. Concretely, Frau Merkel, if one party (who is also the occupier) refuses to negotiate, what do you propose?www.maannews.net/eng/ViewDetails.aspx?ID=394778.......... PLO leader slams U.S., German stance as 'counterproductive'Published yesterday (updated) 09/06/2011 11:52 Ma'an News AgencyRAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- "People do not negotiate their right to statehood. Rather, this is an inherent right," a PLO official lashed out Wednesday in the wake of US and German statements demanding Palestinian officials abort plans to seek UN recognition of statehood. Hanan Ashrawi"Far from acting unilaterally, Palestinians are bringing their case for statehood before the United Nations, the world’s preeminent multilateral body. Self-determination and respect for the sovereignty of nations are principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter, making the UN a natural forum to resolve this issue," Hanan Ashrawi, a member of the Palestine Liberation Organization's Executive Committee said in a statement. The day before, US President Barack Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel spoke out at a news conference, saying they agreed that Palestinians should not seek recognition of a state at the UN in September, calling the move "unilateral." Ashrawi's sharp statement appealed to the leaders, urging them to reflect on their position and "send a very different message" if they wanted to reinforce prospects for peace. "For the last two years, we have built our state from the ground up. Our efforts have been internationally recognized and widely praised. We fulfill all the requirements of statehood as stipulated under Article 4 of the UN Charter and the Montevideo Convention. The sole obstacle that remains is Israel’s refusal to end its occupation," she said in a statement. For peace to be realized, she continued, "You do not leave an occupied people at the mercy of those who occupy them and who act unilaterally in violation of international law by continuing to demolish homes, annex land, build settlements, erect apartheid walls and revoke IDs."On the contrary, come September, we expect President Obama and Chancellor Merkel to support the involvement of the United Nations as a positive step forward in efforts to secure regional peace and safeguard stability, and to recognize that the greatest threat to regional peace and security is Israel’s refusal to respect Palestinian rights and international law," Dr Ashrawi concluded. COMMENTS
1 ) Fred / UK 08/06/2011 19:09 Obama has been lectured well by his masters in Israel, that is why he is trying very hard to put pressure on his friends around the world to stop the Palestinian from taking their case to the UN.Dr Ashrawi is right the Palestinian must go ahead and take their case to the UN,you do not negotiate statehood with the occupied forces[Israel].Once Palestine is recognized as a state then proper negotiation can start between the two states under the supervision of the UN ,not the USA as they are biased.
2 ) Hussam / Palestine 08/06/2011 19:29 Very well said Dr. Ashrawi, thank you.
3 ) jabe7 / Canada 08/06/2011 19:57 So happy to hear Dr. Ashrawi affirm the fundamental rights of the Palestinians. Hopefully, the Palestinian leadership will remain resolute in their determination to go to the UN. Rightly, she points out Israel as the major obstacle obstructing resolution of the conflict. Aided by the unconscionable support of the US administration, Israel wishes to continue to prolong negotiations so that more settlements can be built and "facts on the ground" established. Palestinians need to stay strong!
4 ) Karen Nakamura / California 08/06/2011 20:20 I agree absolutely. After reporting on Palestinian/Israeli conflict for 20 years, I've always seen Palestinians trying and ISrael never doing a thing. Gaza pull back? World was pressuring Israel to treat the occupied humanely so it pulled out then locked Gaza in an open air prison and started shooting.
5 ) Amin / Netherlands 08/06/2011 21:05 Mrs. Ashrawi , your absolutly right. I hope this message shall reached president Obama and Chancellor Merkel. And that they realize that ending Isr. occupation the only way for peace and stablity is in the Mid.East.
6 ) Philly / Sweden 08/06/2011 22:02 God i love dr ashrawi. Truly a strong oalestinian leader. Our beloved Palestine needs more leaders like her!
7 ) Colin Wright / USA 08/06/2011 22:12 That is one of the few compensations of being an advocate for the Palestinians. You don't have to be very creative. All you have to do is speak the obvious truth -- and the phrases will ring. Now, being an advocate for Israel -- there's a toughie.
8 ) Josh / USA 08/06/2011 23:29 Ashrawi for PA President!
9 ) Mark of Lewiston / USA 09/06/2011 06:32 Time to Change Strategies - Israel's current government is bent on killing the two-state option for settling the conflict. They will no change . They think Palestinians will magically disappear or move, something that is very unlikely to happen. They cannot conceive that Israeli-citizen Palestinians will consider voting in mass for a single party. If this were done, 20% of the Knesset would be Arabs and have real political power. In Jerusalem, the city would be virtually controlled too.
10 ) Mark of Lewiston / USA 09/06/2011 06:38 The only thing that will move the stalemate off dead center is if the current powers that be see a real but nonviolent threat to their rule. That can only be accomplished through the ballot. And the first move in that new Knesset should be incorporation of the disenfranchised. Suddenly then, even Likud will move to establish two-states-for-two-peoples. And then Israeli and Palestinian Arabs can decide which option is preferable, one state will equal rights or two-states-for-two-peoples.
11 ) Outsider / EU 09/06/2011 11:27 Dr Ashrawi hit both nails on the head. And besides, Mr Netanyahu has been offered the chance to meet with Abbas in July. He can't say that the opportunities have not been given to Israel to resolve this issue bi-laterally.

A young American Jew describes being arrested for standing in opposition to the Jerusalem Day paradeby Adam Horowitz on June 10, 2011 mondoweiss.netwww.youtube.com/watch?v=zDjbTR8Br_wThe young man being arrested in the video above is Lucas Koerner, and he was a member of the delegation that I recently co-led to Israel/Palestine. Below is Lucas's account of what took place in Jerusalem, which he originally posted on his blog. mondoweiss.net/2011/06/a-young-american-jew-describes-being-arrested-for-standing-in-opposition-to-the-jerusalem-day-parade.html........ The ArrestReturning from Hebron Wednesday afternoon, I glanced outside my window, only to see miles and miles of blue and white. Today was Jerusalem Day, and a parade of thousands marched through the streets celebrating, as if in an orgy of nationalistic fervor, the 44th anniversary of the Israeli conquest of East Jerusalem. What shocked me initially was how eerily monolithic the procession was: it seemed as though the ocean of Israeli flags was meant to blur all distinctions between old and young, boss and worker, women and men, settler and 48er. In light of the events of recent days, I sensed a strong political undertone beneath the cheers and yells of the ecstatic crowds. Coming on the heels of Netanyahu’s defiant speech before Congress, it appeared to me that the marchers streaming down Sultan Suleiman St. that evening sought to echo their PM’s bold remarks, that all of Jerusalem was “theirs” forever. Indeed, it seemed that this display of triumphal nostalgia concealed a deeper, far weaker emotion, a lurking fear of a future in which nothing between the river and the sea would be exclusively “theirs” but would have to be shared with the other. After witnessing first hand, over the past week and a half, the many horrors the occupation has inflicted on the Palestinian people, my fellow delegates and I trembled with indignation at the chutzpah of these Israeli marchers as they boisterously paraded through East Jerusalem, brandishing their flags of conquest. Prompted by the traffic to walk the rest of the way to our hotel, we were inspired to launch an impromptu parade of our own. Donning our keffiyehs we had purchased at the Hebron Keffiyeh factory and our small Palestinian flags, we we’re met by spit, aluminum cans, and pure, unadulterated hatred. Police instantly set upon us, accosting me, demanding that I put away my 3 by 5 inch Palestinian flag. It was remarkable how so much as giving voice to the other, the “Arab”, the Palestinian, in 3 by 5 form in E. Jerusalem no less could ignite such visceral fear and hatred. Upon returning to the Holy Land Hotel, my comrades (Haneen, Amanda, Peter, Lydia, Tammy & Tiffany) and I decided that we would go back to the parade merely to hang out and observe, this time without our small Palestinian flags. In order to avoid any provocations, we simply posted up on the side walk, and, still wearing our keffiyehs, we proceeded to wave and make peace sign gestures to the paraders, who marched on the other side of the street, separated from us by a high gate. The initial reaction of the marchers was a combination of shock and disbelief. I myself had elected to wear, along with my keffiyeh, a kippah adorned with a small Palestinian flag. This last article of clothing on my head contributed, I believe, more than anything else to the climate of collective bewilderment, especially among the youth. For them, Judaism and its physical symbol, the kippah, were inseparably bound up with the particular strain of ethno-religious nationalism associated with the state of Israel. It simply never occurred to them that a Jewish person would, in the name of Jewish ethics, stand in solidarity with the oppressed Palestinian people in their struggle for freedom. I feel that it was precisely this cognitive dissonance on a societal level that formed the motivation for my arrest. As we walked up and down the sidewalk, waving our peace signs, many Palestinians of all ages approached to join us. With twenty or thirty people now gathered on the sidewalk facing the parade, we turned over leadership of what had become a demonstration to Palestinian activists, and we happily clapped and danced to their songs and chants. Standing on two feet high pylons, we tried to maintain our visibility as internationals in order to confer as much protection as possible to the Palestinians. The demonstration remained totally peaceful - just singing, whistling, and clapping. In fact, much to the chagrin of the paraders, we often danced to their music. Many Palestinians, fascinated with my kippah, approached me and exclaimed, “I love you”. For a moment, a space was opened for Palestinians to freely gather in their own streets and protest, peacefully demanding their basic rights. We were soon to learn just how brief that moment would be. Suddenly, the police moved in without warning of any kind. Officers on horseback came so close to the sidewalk, nearly hitting some of the demonstrators. I stepped down from the pylon. In that instant, my impulse to flee was counteracted by the firm realization that, standing on a sidewalk waving a peace sign, I had every right to be there, and if I fled, who would stand with the Palestinians? I stepped back up on the pylon. Moments later, an Israeli police officer ran up, seized me, and dragged me to the other side of the street. He then punched me in the face, put me in a choke hold, and with four other officers, slammed me to the ground. I was eventually handcuffed and carried to the car; I allowed my body to go limp and refused to walk on my own in a gesture of nonviolent defiance. Throughout the whole affair, the only thing audible coming from the policemen was a constant stream of curses words, “motherfucker”, “piece of shit”, etc., which was to me a ringing confirmation of how infuriated and threatened they were by a 19-year old wearing a kippah and a keffiyeh standing with the Palestinians.
